Permadeath Character Finally Met His End… Good Night Sweet Prince.

Permadeath Character Finally Met His End… Good Night Sweet Prince.

He met his end in an all out slug-fest in close-combat against a massive five-star sentinel troop — he was used to this kind of thing. Truth be told, he often picked fights with them just for the thrill. And oh what a thrill today, as a storm came in and ate away at his hazard protection, and then into his shields. He picked up what repairs he could from the remains and ruin he’d laid to the previous (and now dispatched) squads of sentinel reinforcements. But there was something in the wind today, and the sentinel walker had a tight beam on him. He’d escaped such predicaments many times before, but the walker just wouldn’t fall. The repair drones strafed behind the walker while they did their work, continuing to dodge the Travelers relentless fire. A flank of drones materialized into existence, called by their brethren, and laid into the Traveler. Today would be the day that they would finally out an end to The Traveller that had laid waste to countless thousands of their kind. Today, they WOULD have their revenge.

As his health ran low, he made a quick tactical retreat to let his shield recharge — swinging his multi-tool hard and burning his jet pack for all it was worth. He took to the air as if he was born to it— making a clean escape, dodging an incomprehensibly complex weave of laser fire. He zigzagged in the air and landed deftly … next to a hazardous flora — not unlike a Venus Flytrap. He barely had time to think, before fanged petals of the horrific plant snapped closed. All became black.

Perhaps it was not quite the glorious death he would have wanted. Certainly the sentinels would have preferred the death strike to have been delivered by one of theirs. Perhaps that was his last rebellion against them. To deprive them of that privilege. Such was his way in life— dirty scoundrel and pirate that he was.

His was a good life. It was filled with adventure, close scrapes, exploration, skullduggery, and inconceivable wonders the likes of which no other will ever again see. He is gone, but will be forever remembered.

Hail Traveler.

Thee good news is, I love this game. Especially the early game on Permadeath. So here are two screen shots, one just a day before my last character bought the farm after an amazing years-long run (including a trip to the center of Euclid and Hilbert).

The other is a screen shot from the innocent eyes of my New Fresh-Boi on Permadeath. Loving starting over. It reminds me of how hard the game felt the first time I played it at launch. And, once I unlock the Anomaly, I can send him through the expedition.

We can all agree the game is great, but what are some criticisms that you have for this game that yo...

No negativity towards the game , I have been playing since release and I think the game is going great, but if I’m going to be honest, there are some things that make me think “If only…”, like:

  • The life in the game, there’s not much depth to it, if I meet someone, the most I can expect is a simple interaction, and learn a few alien words. I can’t go out and feel like , “Oh that gek is up to something, let me see what he’s got going..” . Every interaction just feels like a quick touch and go no matter where you are. I want to feel like there’s so much going on around me.

  • Fauna feels the same way because every animal is a copy-and-paste. There’s no individualism when it comes down to creatures like, maybe seeing an herbivore, going up to plants and eating them, while watching a carnivore stalk it’s prey, and not walking up to them and giving them a quick smack on the head and digging in. Or a strider using it’s long legs to eat leaves off trees.

  • The lack of Hostile NPCs. I’ve had this one for a while, as mentioned above, NPCs offer no depth when it comes to interactions , and that includes hostile interactions. Pirates do not live up to their name because the most they will do is blow up your freighter/ship and fly off. What if pirates took your cargo, and you’d have to find them to retrieve it back? What if they landed on some planet with your loot and you’d have to take them out on foot? What if instead of blowing up your capital ship, they land in your ship to kill you, and your crew, as well as find and raid storage units you have installed, or raid the storages from the Captain?

  • Ship depth and interiors, another one I have had for a while, as mentioned above with fauna, it feels like a copy and paste when it comes down to the depth of a ship. You go into a ship in 1st person, it’s the same cockpit, depending on class, but what if you got a ship that made it feel likes it’s own ship? Like Tier 1 ships having a more brokendown cockpit , Tier 2 having a decent, organized cockpit, and Tier 3 ships having a high-end cockpit? Energy distribution was introduced with the Echoes update, and I think they should continue to explore what mechanics they could add to the ships.

  • Interiors are another. Haulers, Shuttles , explorers, all have the potential to have a crew, walk around, place items, or sleep in, but its limited to just flying and I think that should be considered. This would work well for rescue missions, as you would find the NPC in your hold while you’re on your way to the drop-off

  • No Aesthetic Ambience, you land on a forest planet, no sounds of fauna in the distance, you land on a snow planet, you don’t hear winds , you land on an ocean planet, you don’t hear waves on the beaches, I think planet types should gave their own type of ambience to make them stand out aesthetically

  • Staffs being a reskinned multi-tool and the lack of Melee weapons, Staffs are neat addition to the aesthetic of the game, but there’s nothing I can’t do with Staffs that I could do with a Sentinel MT. Even in VR, it is held like a gun, it’s so awkward to hold. I just think they should have more melee capabilities to make them stand out as a staff and not a reskinned MT. Currently, they share the same stats as S class Sentinel rifle, but I think they should have some sort of melee prod and swing to give more options to it and make it stand out

Nearly 100 panoramic images from 6-1/2 years of playing No Man's Sky

Nearly 100 panoramic images from 6-1/2 years of playing No Man's Sky

Under the Rings (Frontiers)

I started with No Man’s Sky in 2016 when it launched on Steam and I was immediately captivated by how beautiful it was. But as an amateur photographer who does a lot of panoramic photography, it also occurred to me how well suited the game was to the same treatment. The result is my Flickr album with nearly 100 panoramic images from the 6-1/2 years I’ve been playing. (Posted as a Flickr Album because of sheer quantity, and because Reddit doesn’t lend itself to wide-aspect photos).

I started creating panoramic images from the game that first week. It was a lot harder in the early days: there was no photo mode so things kept moving while you shot each frame, you couldn’t disable the scan lines or vignetting, you couldn’t adjust the lighting or time of day, and placing your ship precisely was next to impossible. It’s gotten a lot easier over the years.

Most of the images are stitched together from between 20 and 30 individual frames, and then cropped to frame. Most end up between about 5 and 6k wide.

I’ve been doing it off and on. Most of my panos are from NEXT and earlier, and then from Prisms and beyond (I took a pause form the game between Visions and Origins, so there are gaps). And I have a number of sequences that I never got around to assembling.

Motivation after a certain point in the story was suddenly gone. Am I the only one? SPOILER for the ...

Am I the only one who lost all motivation to explore when I reached the point in the story where you realise that all you see is just supposed to be simulated and not real?

It’s not even the repeating assets on animals and plants. I had specific things in mind I wanted to do before that happened. But after that point all the things I wanted to do lost their appeal. It was suddenly, right after I reached that point. I felt a strange sense of meaninglessness when I thought about continuing to explore the universe. It lost all immersion for me because it is just a program in canon.

I played for about 2 months frequently. It was one of my favourite games ever but right then I suddenly realised it is a huge waste of time to continue because it is just pixels in canon. All motivation was suddenly gone. I’ve never experienced that before and it makes me sad because I loved this game. But now when I log in I just see pixels. I cannot immerse myself in the world anymore.
