Nearly 100 panoramic images from 6-1/2 years of playing No Man's Sky

Under the Rings (Frontiers)

I started with No Man’s Sky in 2016 when it launched on Steam and I was immediately captivated by how beautiful it was. But as an amateur photographer who does a lot of panoramic photography, it also occurred to me how well suited the game was to the same treatment. The result is my Flickr album with nearly 100 panoramic images from the 6-1/2 years I’ve been playing. (Posted as a Flickr Album because of sheer quantity, and because Reddit doesn’t lend itself to wide-aspect photos).

I started creating panoramic images from the game that first week. It was a lot harder in the early days: there was no photo mode so things kept moving while you shot each frame, you couldn’t disable the scan lines or vignetting, you couldn’t adjust the lighting or time of day, and placing your ship precisely was next to impossible. It’s gotten a lot easier over the years.

Most of the images are stitched together from between 20 and 30 individual frames, and then cropped to frame. Most end up between about 5 and 6k wide.

I’ve been doing it off and on. Most of my panos are from NEXT and earlier, and then from Prisms and beyond (I took a pause form the game between Visions and Origins, so there are gaps). And I have a number of sequences that I never got around to assembling.

Update on my Archive base. Still under construction. Almost finished with first platform.

Update on my Archive base. Still under construction. Almost finished with first platform.

It’s been a minute since I posted a video, mostly because of the upload limit in this sub. I’ve been continuing on with the build. The first of the two platforms is almost finished. Next I will be building the residential facilities around the other platform, and then I’ll fill in all the gaps with bright lights or something. Then I’ll upload it and share the coords!

How long does it take you to choose your next system jump?

How long does it take you to choose your next system jump?

It took me a good 10-15 minutes to find this next system to jump to – I’m near the end of my journey to the centre but I’m still fussing over which system to go to next. Used to be a time when a 3-star economy would suffice. Then Interceptors came along and it had to be a dissonant system as well. Now we have Atlantid multi-tools and it makes sense to make sure that Dissonant 3-star system is run by the Korvax, as the monoliths you visit to activate the Interceptors “brains” also contain Atlantid technology if they are Korvax monoliths. So, I filter by race now, check all the blue systems for dissonance and look for 3 star economies.

What is your process? Are you still on The Journey and if so, do you just rush to the furthest system or do you take time to be selective? Do you just click at random?

I am absolutely blown away by how good this runs on Switch

I’ve got about 2000 hours between Xbox and PC. I bought the Switch version on launch and it was so-so. I mean I didn’t really expect MUCH in the way of performance.

Must have been one of the recent updates, but holy HELL how did the developers do this!? Between game engine optimization and the raw talent of the HG team, I am beside myself.

I don’t want to reach too deep into my pocket full of dreams but I hope Light No Fire comes to Switch as well. I was literally about to sell my OLED last week until I fired up NMS again.
