NMS HOT POST 2021/07/20

NMS community is one of the most wholesome

I'm quite new to the game, picked it up during the recent steam summer sale. I had really wanted to go to a specific coordinate to buy an exotic ship design I had seen on a website, but had no means to get there. As I have not unlocked glyphs yet and do not know how to. I also could not understand how to chart my way using pilgrim. Thankfully, the kind souls at NMS help, notably Jihiro from NMS help, Koala from nms-lfg-lft who went beyond to help me access the starcabs discord properly, and my kind cabbie Codevasco for guiding me to my destination.

I have having a rather moody day IRL but because of the kindness I experienced from them, my evening became a little brighter. Thank you kind travellers, may your stars always shine bright.

NMS Q&A thread! Ask questions, provide answers or just submit a tip. We hope this helps our valu...

This post will be refreshed every few days. The old post are still available for answering questions in those post.

Below are a few popular questions that we’ve received from our past FAQ thread. As always we ask that everyone be respectful and we welcome everyone’s contribution so have fun!

Q- I’m keen to start a new passive money making pursuit. What are some good ideas or guides post-Waypoint?

A#1-Gold farm, then take that stack and sell it at a terminal (not traders) in systems that sell gold. Sell all your gold to the terminal and crash the economy. Then buy it all back at 80% off discount. You just got free money and keep all the gold. All this takes is an initial investment on a gold farm, then you carry all that gold with you and just sell/buy back when you get to another system that sells gold. With 50 stacks in my ship’s cargo hold, I can make somewhere around 150 million units in each system I do this in.

A#2-Start a Farm, Fusion Igniters or Statis Devices Farm which will increase your profits to 100- 200 mil fairly quickly and you can even send out multiple freighter missions which will help you get aronium, magno-gold, Enriched carbon and more which will increase the profits even more.

A#3-Quickest way I’ve found to make a TON of units: Harvesting Storm Crystals. Find a VERY hot planet that has frequent fire storms. DURING STORMS ONLY – you can see the bright white light from Storm Crystals if you fly around low enough. Fly to them, land, quickly harvest them, get back in your ship and fly to the next before you burn up. Q-Where can I post ships and other cool stuff that I want to share with the public? A-You can always post on this sub and now the NMSGlyphExchange is live! Q-How do I get the Advanced Mining Laser? I don’t have the option to craft one, and the multi-tool upgrade vendor at the space station doesn’t have the blueprint for sale.

A-In order to get it, you have to look for the blueprints in crashed ships or abandoned facilities. You get it from the main story (awakenings) or you can buy it on the anomaly.

Q-What do I actually do in the game? I finished the tutorial, is there anything else beside gathering stuff, building a base and repeat?

A#1-It’s really whatever you want, there’s a base story, (assuming you haven’t completed it already), follow the quest log and you’ll figure it out, but things You’d want to do for end game? You can collect multiple multitools, ships, built a fleet for your freighter, etc.

Q-Is there a planet that is populated by many players, and they built their base close to each others like a city?

A- Yeah its the Galactic Hub Project, Its a place where many people have bases and each day the numbers grow. Please help yourself. There are many factions in NMS that do this, even NMS Pirates Hub.

Q-I’m still pretty early into the game, just making my way to the center of the galaxy, what should I be spending my credits on?

A-Go hang around a outlaw/pirate trading post. Cheapest S-class start at around 8-8.5 million without a trade-in. I recommend Vikeen pirate, as then you have two good and 1 remote chances at high-maneuverability S-class: fighter, solar, exotic.

The Practical Problem With Ship Customization (No Matter Which Side of the Fence You're On)

The Practical Problem With Ship Customization (No Matter Which Side of the Fence You're On)

Ship customization is literally impossible in No Man’s Sky. Now hold on and let me explain. As long as you conform to the possible parts, colors, and the rules that govern them, your dream ship already exists. Yep, it’s out there, somewhere.

I say that because literally every combination exists already. There are at least 64 billion of each type out there as a matter of fact. They’ve all been built, procedurally. That ship has a unique identifier (so do trees, rocks, planets, animals, Gek, everything) that’s called a seed. It’s an ungainly hexadecimal number that can be up to 24 digits long. I’m not even sure how big that is, because my calculator goes into scientific notation and my eyes glass over. 😜

When you, or anyone else, sees your ship, the game sees it’s seed and shows you the decoded ship. Because of that you can’t change the wing, the color, or the thrusters without changing the seed. But that seed already exists, it belongs to another ship out there, somewhere. So, you can’t customize your ship, you have to get a new ship, that’s just the way the game works.

Did I mention how many billions of ships are out there? When you change that wing, the game then would have to search each and every one of those billions and billions of seeds, unpacking each along the way, until it found a match. It takes a long time and, mind you, the game cannot create a new seed, there aren’t any left that conform to the rules.

How do I know? We do it every day. It’s called seed-swapping. By editing your saved game and putting in a new seed, you change the appearance of your ship (and two of it’s stats, damage and maneuverability.) How do we find the seeds, just like I said in the paragraph above. Some perspective here.

An example of a custom fighter being \”created\”, but really the program searches the game for it.

If you have a red fighter and you want it white, not a problem. We built a program that can do that, it will break down the seed of your current ship and go look for a white one. Takes about 90 seconds. That’s just one color of 5. So if your ship is red and blue and you want it white and yellow, you may get lucky and find it in 3-5 minutes. Want green decals with that? Want to change a wing as well? Heh, forget about it. Now we’re up to a half hour or longer search and we’re only got the one bot to do it. As it is that thing runs constantly most days.

So that’s your problem. The ships exist, they are already assigned to a particular system and they’re in the game. The only way to change it is to literally get a new ship (seed).

Now, we’ve gotten clever and pre-unpacked a couple of billion fighters and haulers and put them in a database. If what you are looking for is in the database, sweet, you can do a 3 color search in a couple of seconds. It’s HUGE! We’re talking tens of of gigabytes already (and took a week just to get that many unpacked).

For HG to go the database route and allow you to freely customize your ship, your PC or Console would have to hold 2 or 3 TERRABYTES or more of database just for ships. The genius of procedural generation is that only the rules and the seeds have to be stored, not all the data.

Anyway, that’s it in a nutshell. I know it seems so simple, you’ve seen all the parts and colors why can’t you just swap them out? It comes down to procedural generation. As it is, the game only has to store the rules in code, and the key (seed) to unlock an asset according to those rules. If it had to store the full definition of each asset, it would simply be orders of magnitude to big. Remember the numbers we’re talking about here, 18 quintillion planets and every rock, plant animal, etc has to be defined somehow (as well as 21 ships for that star system).

If you’d like to have a look at what we’re doing you’re welcome to join the Discord, try out the bot, and ask questions.

I've only hopped galaxies once. Does one to recollect glyphs?

A few years ago I finished a few of the storylines (I’m pretty sure that Atlas and I came to an agreement) and I ended up with all 16 glyphs then. I travelled to the 2nd galaxy, found my ship, then logged off. Haven’t been back to that save since. If I logged in would I have to get 16 new glyphs? Like, I think the symbols are all the same but would I have to collect them again?
