NMS HOT POST 2022/01/25

Are you new player looking for some tips to get you started? Are you a veteran player with some advice you want to pass along? Looking for a good way to earn units, nanites or just how to get the most out of the game? Check out our new FAQ thread!

Here's some of the FAQ suggestions we received in our previous FAQ thread. Keep in mind that these are opinions from some of our valued OP's and you may agree or disagree with some of these. We just ask that everyone remains respectful when replying to this thread and we look forward to your contribution! NMSTG Mod Team

You can also drop a quick tip!

Tip #1: Always try to be doing multiple things. Pick up the portable refiner so you can refine something from your inventory while exploring and mining.

Tip #2: Avoid multiplayer until unlocking the anomaly, can be stranded if not.

Tip #3: Exotic worlds only have 1 fauna so it's easy to scan all of them.

Tip #4: Need glyphs? All 16 are on one planet here

Q- "I was on the Anomaly and a bunch of expensive stuff showed up in my inventory. What do I do with it? A:" Congrats! Another player has bestowed you with a gift. Most likely it is an item to sell for some quick and easy cash. Usually the item description will tell you what it is used for.

Q: "Help, I claimed a broken ship and now I can't find my starter ship! Is it gone forever?" A:" If you merely selected to "claim" the broken ship and not "swap" it, then your old ship is still around. If you left it with launch fuel in the tank, you can summon it with the quick-menu. If it does not have fuel, it can be summoned on the Anomaly (once you unlock it), your freighter (once you acquire one).

Q- "Are crashed ships worth repairing?" A-" Unless it is an exotic, no. Scrap the ship at the space station, sell the items it gives you, and use those units to buy a better, working version of a ship in that system.

Q- "Any advice for new players?" A-"For new players, make sure you read the guide in-game. It's an excellent beginner's guide for traveling, learning about the alien races, building, and etc. Take a look over the catalogue of items too. Also, I'd strongly suggest mining a massive amount of carbon, oxygen, and sodium. These three items will be some of your most used and critical items in the game

Leaving a galaxy the hard way

At the beginning of the year I gained the “To live forever” achievement in my first permadeath run, only to die stupidly a few days later. So I went straight back in. Did that 16th warp yesterday.

Turned out the game had decided to put the portal on an infected dustbowl with aggressive sentinels. Well, OK. I could have found the sentinel pillar and shut down the opposition, but I had all the resources you might need to open a portal, so I figured I could open it before the sentinels triggered. Well, nearly…

Ever think you’ve activated all the glyphs but you missed one and you cant see which? I was hunting for that last one when the sentinels found me. I did consider digging a hole, hiding and then going to find the pillar, but than I thought “This is what I’m here for. Bring it on.” So I summoned the minotaur and the three of us (can’t leave Laylaps out of the main event) got ready to party.

During the second wave, a dust storm hit. Night fell. Visibility became very poor. Third wave I didn’t get to the summoner drones quickly and spent a lot of time scrambling to find the combat supplies that drones drop because my shield kept being knocked down to around 20% or worse.

That’s when the game started to slow down (gotta love those memory leaks). Froze completely for a few seconds, a couple of times.

At a point during the fourth wave, summoner drones still beating me to the punch and repair drones all over the place, when I had run clear around the edge of the fight to find some supplies, the game slowing down more, I’d just found a precious green canister only for Laylaps to get in the way so that I had to endure the (slowed down) dialog before I could get free and recharge my shields, I though to myself (I had time, what with the game misbehaving):

“After your first PD death, after you stopped kicking the furniture, you promised yourself that you were going to learn and to show that you had the good sense and foresight to survive and prosper in this mode.

What happened?”

And yet we lived. Fifth wave as at least as hairy as the fourth, but we lived. Shortly after we finally killed the walker, the storm cleared up.

Had to repair half of the minotaur’s modules. He really took the heat for me in the last two waves. Took that screenshot of my team just before I left. They were there for me. Then I stepped through.

There is a coda to this story.

I chose Eissentam because you don’t find much company in PD and, outside Euclid, there are more people there than anywhere else. Also, after a fight like that it would be nice to land on a paradise planet. “What random name will it have?” I wondered, “And what will I call it?”

Hiltoni Major? Seriously? Gods of procgen, are you just laughing at me? Well, after such a welcome, I had little choice for a name.

The Hilton Majestic is a very grand old hotel in Harrogate, England, if you’re wondering. Justice dictates that I build a large base and call it “The Majestic”.

That was my story. Thanks for reading. Despite all evidence to the contrary, I intend to make this save last. See you around, fellow PD players.

PSA for Expedition OMEGA if you use your main save

If you can get by in the expedition without using the expansion slots for multitools, your exosuit, and your starship that you are awarded during the different phases of the expedition, you can take them back with you to your main save when the expedition is over, and use them on your main save.

Keep in mind that you can buy one exosuit expansion at the space station and one in the Anomaly in each system you visit during the expedition as well.

Also, despite the end-of-expedition bug that I managed to get around with the photo-mode fix, I really liked how I could take things back to my main save. It was also very satisfying to get a ton of units and nanites to carry over to your main save, not only for the other stuff in your inventories, but also your in-expedition accomplishments, even those not directly related to the expedition itself.

I sometimes feel that the HG devs don’t respect the players’ time with some of their design decisions, but this was the first time I felt like my time was well worth playing the expedition because it advanced my main save as well, and not just with cosmetics and cool building parts.

How many bases do you have? Really though?

I have developed the habit of constantly building bases on any planet that interests me, even a little bit. I almost never return to most of them, except to avoid lengthy travel or to harvest a resource when I can’t find enough in trade. I think I have twenty-five or more bases now. Should I delete them and try to just keep one base? How many bases do you have and/or use regularly? Edit: autocorrect
