One of the creepiest planets I found so far.

One of the creepiest planets I found so far.

So, way back in Permadeath I found this Freezing Hell near the core of Calypso, so far nothing special right. But, the place had open ocean and I thought about building a small fishing boat right then and there.

So now, in normal mode I did. So what is so special about it? First of all, the nearest places to land were this two pieces of rock located 2000 and 2500 units away, there is nothing out there. Also, the sounds are pretty eerie and there is some growling coming from the ocean, somewhere near my ship.

There is nothing out there. The planet does have a lush overgrown environment, with predator animals and really aggressive sentinels. The ocean is yellow.

So this is my fishing ship, named it The Orca… turns out quite convenient actually.

Now, with the nightfall and storms, things get quite different, a lot.

Most of these actually hit quite close to the ship, but that’s nothing.

Think I’m gonna need a bigger boat…

If you ever encountered a sea worm in the middle of nowhere, you will know it’s quite a sight. I’ve seen tons of them on the land and kinda got used to them, this one was quite a surprise.

So, in part it’s the planet, in part the location if figured I’d try and build my boat… Anyway, figured I’d share.

Built this in normal mode. Took me a while to find the damn planet again.

Unsolicited opinion on how to make NMS better: Improve the galaxy map & my sense of place

Take this with a huge grain of salt, because I come from Elite Dangerous as well as a few other space games (which I no longer really play).

While I agree NMS has its own emphasis (on base building, survival) and is not fair to compare to sim-like games (Elite, Star Citizen, etc).

One thing that has always bothered me, is the vastness of the galaxy in NMS, but I have no (or little) sense of place in the galaxy, and no “sandbox reason” to plot a particular course (other than maybe one mission sending me a hop away, or one of the general story lines automating my pathway). Additionally, I despise the UI and interactions of the galaxy map.. simply selecting a place to go, understanding its direction etc… I find it awkward and confusing.

If I’m playing it wrong, or just missing some details, so be it, I’m happy to hear suggestions.

My suggestion:

Allow for zooming out and interactions with the map that make me more positionally aware, allow me to bookmark better on the actual map (rather than just list of teleport spots from a teleport). Have the galaxy map sliced into named regions. Have economies, resources, mission types, rare items, compel me to explore and travel bigger distances and custom plot paths.. Basically anything that gives more purpose to where I am relative to my position in the whole galaxy (beyond just heading towards the center). (I understand that certain system types are more likely to have thing X, or Y… but it feels so random and always a jump away, still no reason to explore in the way that seems fulfilling to me)

No matter how enormous the galaxy is, it’s kind of irrelevant to me if I don’t actually care where I am (which in today’s NMS I really don’t), and don’t have more reasons to plot pathways to known areas.

Mad I waited so long to try this game

The title explains it. I’ve owned the game since 2020 and tried it a bit here and there but it never really clicked.

Fast forward to today and with the Orbital update I decided to give it one last go. Wow, I am loving it. 25 hours in the past week and I keep discovering new game systems and stuff to unlock or do. Even found my first Grave of the Ocean King (scared the crap out of me).

Trying to avoid guide videos because I feel like some folks get really focused on optimization, but if you have suggestions for things I should try or people to watch, I’m all ears.

tl;dr I bought NMS 4 years ago but never gave it a chance until now. Mad I missed out!
