NMS HOT POST 2022/12/10

Survival mode: I just wanna say that making things more annoying doesn’t mean they have made it more difficult.

After almost 900 hours of play time I decided to start a new game in Survival Mode.

The wiki details are pretty sparse (https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Game_mode#Survival_mode) , but basically what I've seen comes down to a few changes:

  1. You die you lose your carried stuff
  2. Your inventory stacks are severely limited
  3. Planet resources are further apart
  4. Enemies have more health
  5. (anecdotal) Planets are set up to kill you

One – This is reasonable, especially if you die (like I did) early in the game in space.

Two – This also includes the amount you can place in refiners. This is just annoying and time consuming. Nothing about this is harder or "survival", just gets in the way. It makes the game much more boring, as you end up feeding the refiners constantly rather than setting them and coming back a little later.

Three – Again, more annoying and time-consuming but not harder. You can still find the resources you need, but takes more hunting to find the resource you need near enough to a power hotspot. More boring.

Four – Good. No objection. They may have increased the number of enemies (for pirate raids or Sentinels), but I don't think that's actually happened. Seems about the same. I think more enemies is a much greater risk than greater health, as they have an easier time targeting you while you're focused on picking them off.

Five – This SEEMS to be the case but I may just have bad luck. Every single planet I've been on has had weather or environmental damage at play. However, I've only encountered one seriously aggressive predator (a very fast bonecat) in about 30 hours of play though.

Summary: I think Survival could use some work. Adding difficulty doesn't have to come along with making the game slower or less enjoyable. There's a few tweaks I've hinted at above that could improve playability and fun.

Change my mind 🙂

Almost 9 hours of spacetravelling trying to find a freighter rescue mission...

I don’t know what to say. I don’t know what to feel.

Some people say that I only to play the game 3 hours and need to warp 5 times. I have been trying since yesterday. I had even let the game open, hoping that this would pass the “3 hours” cooldown.

No.

I have travelled to 160+ systems already. The galaxy has been to peaceful, where are the pirates? Wave after wave, I gaze into this sea of stars as my heart drowns into loneliness. The music of my warp engine has long made my ears bleed. My heart has turned cold, yet I still have perseverance.

I hope someday I will meet that fateful encounter.

Nanite refining

Been play for a little over 200 hrs and hearing about Nanite farms using Runaway Mold. Made a couple of farms myself. Then learned other methods of refining nanites. Check on the wiki and found a lot of stuff just sitting in my storage I can use….

Ship Customization could kill exploration - An alternative proposal

Ship Customization could kill exploration - An alternative proposal

IMO one of the most vibrant aspects of the NMS community is the multitude of Ship/Capital Ship/Planet/Companion hunters out there that post on YouTube and in the Glyph Exchange. This activity provides a huge amount of community engagement while feeding into the main *exploration* element of the core game.

If HG implements ship customization, this part of the full NMS experience could disappear or be diminished to near irrelevance.

Here’s what I think could be a good alternative: We could simply tap into the amazing dynamic that the players have already created on their own and set up a Glyph Exchange Interface in the Space Anomaly.

I think the perfect place would be the unused computer interface in the middle of the blueprint vendor area behind Nada and Polo.

This would actually supercharge exploration and give players a great chance to find the ships they want. It could include a search function based on the player-named parts (with visual icons).

We could use this to search for glyphs for all of the most exciting things we all love in the game: Ships, Capital Ships, Planets, and Companions… plus anything else they add in the future.

It’s just a thought… hopefully this idea could catch on.

Edit: additional thoughts: It could also be great to implement five or so “Scouting Guilds”… you join the Guild of your choice and as Guild members post up Glyphs to the in-game exchange they gain standing on a leaderboard.

I think I messed up.

I was doing the Atlas/Artemis missions. When I portaled to a new system, I didn’t know it would break all my stuff so I freaked out. I spawned on a very radioactive planet and almost died. I found my ship just in time. Fixed enough to get to the space station and warp back to my hone base. Now I seem to be stuck on the Atlas mission, and every time I talk to the atlas it asks for a heart of the sun, and nothing happens. I go and talk to Polo and Nada and they’re no help. I can’t help but think I messed up by warping home. Anyone ran into this?
