NMS HOT POST 2023/06/26

Wanting to give this another whirl. What can I do to avoid the problems I had last time?

I've played NMS a few times since it was released. The first couple of times I bounced off of it (both were fairly early in its history.) The last time I was really, really enjoying it – except grinding for fuel.

*Note: You'll have to forgive me not remembering all of the specifics or getting a few details wrong. It's been a couple of years.

Every time I got on I'd end up spending 2/3 of my available time just farming frigate fuel. It ended up killing the game for me – I wanted to explore, to build, to send out missions, but all I ever got to do was either stand there and mine or run from trade terminal to trade terminal. It took most of my free time and sucked all of the fun out of it.

I've seen a few cheesy tricks to bypass it, but I really don't want to resort to silly, anti-immersive cheese (like constantly building and tearing down mini-bases.)

I'd really like to come give this thing another shot, and maybe even get to the center this time – but I want to see if there's a way I can avoid running into the same problem again.

4.0 Inventory: Thoughts from a veteran player

So… I had the chance to play several hours of the new update yesterday, here are my thoughts.

Some context: My main save is on survival with several hundred hours in, I had maxed out my exosuit, main ship, a second ship, multitool and the freighter with hard-to-get X-class rolls on maneuverability, jump range, shields, S-class freighter 250ly upgrades and all corresponding other S-class freighter upgrades.

I initially was taken aback by only being able to utilize half of many of my hard-earned upgrades. And then I played. I started my save back when I didn’t know anything about NMS and wanted it to be harder.

After making good progress and playing several hundred hours on this save, my progress felt stale, I didn’t feel the urge to log in and do stuff… I had seen a great part of all the variety in planets, building felt horrible with the stack size of 1000 and inventory management was a pain with juggling all the upgrades, the amount of silver to spend on freighter rooms was a pain.

Now that 4.0 is here, I logged in and the first thing I did was change the stack size to 9999. And then mourned my slower ship, less exosuit shield, poured some 400M in upgrading some multitool slots and saw my money drop to below 1B since… well forever.

And then it hit me. Exitement started running through my brain, seeing that ship costs had increased, money was spent faster and I can work towards a great deal more inventory space.

And ohhhh boy is it more, I can stack upgrades now, my whole upgrade “cargo” ship reduced to like 4 stacks.

And then I saw that the fleet freighter upgrades finally work completely. And every system I went to I worked on increasing my exosuit inventory slots, bought a lot of items to sell later, jumped in some dog fights and saw my exosuit get wrecked and my ship get wrecked as I couldn’t solo everything as easily as before, I needed to repair a lot of modules and the quicksilver and multitool slot rewards felt hard earned and worth it and trading feels worth it now again and running around getting more exosuit slots…

And I was really surprised. I thought YES YES YES this is great give me more of it!!

And then I thought about the “lost” ugrades – and it hit me. They are not lost. They are in my inventory ready to be installed again – when I have enough technology space, or, and here comes the kicker: in another ship.

Now I need less upgrades per ship to max it out – and – fights are more clutch, more important, there is a strong incentive in having multiple weapon systems to cycle through, dodging is more important and face-tanking a bad idea.

After just one day and several hours I came to the conclusion that the update is actually great. My biggest fear was that my fighter would feel like a turtle, but because of the law of diminishing returns it sure felt slower – but not as much as I had feared.

And that is a drawback I am totally willing to make for the benefits I already discussed.

Now you might be thinking that there are a lot of updates that are now useless, namely freighter and exosuit upgrades which you can’t put in another ship or multitool.

You are totally right. But then I thought about the community aspect of the game – and the second I am sure we will never be able to put them in again I will head to the anomaly with a smile on my face and drop them off to somebody who needs them more, or give them away here (if that is possible, still haven’t tested it).

The update put back the survival in my survival save, got rid of my main annoyance (the stack size), gave me trading back, something to do, the fun to build more without stupid inventory restrictions and with more ressources to gather while I’m out and about because I can just store them.

So my ship is a little slower and my jetpack a little emptier – well now there is space for some of them ?-upgrades with jetpack capacity and all the more reason to bump around in a few of my other ships.

I really do think I gained a lot and lost next to nothing, even though I am probably one of the people who lost most with this update. And there will surely be updates which will introduce different ways to improve our ships again to former glory.

Thanks for reading, I hope this viewpoint may take some of the frustration away that some people seem to be having and I was afraid of having when logging back in.

Have a great day, fellow interloper!

Novice tips to S Class multitool hunting

Novice tips to S Class multitool hunting

Hello, I’ve made a few post of the past weeks with 8-10 multitools (MTs) that I’ve found recently over the past year. I’ve been hunting tools since launch and thankfully ish that it has gotten a lot easier.

This seems like common since, but I had several questions arise, so I thought an update may be useful to some newbies.

Tools are pooled at the system/space station (SS) level and planetary levels. In general the SS level usually carries the dominate tool from each planet. You can see this by landing on each planet in the system and reloading your save. Then fly back to the SS and you’ll see a different tool, this tool will be the dominate tool for that planet in most cases.

  1. Decide on your hunting method
    1. duplicating inhabitable outpost (IOs) maps
      1. whatever method you use to dup
    2. trading navigation data (ND) for maps
      1. trade NDs for inhabited outpost (IOs) maps and maybe a few ancient artifact maps
      2. go to a couple wealthy systems and visit a planet
      3. use 6 or so maps to load up the HUD with the NPC buildings, there should be one minor settlement.
      4. check the minor settlement (MS) to see if it sells nd, if not use another map until the next minor settlement shows up, rinse and repeat. Once the NDs are found place a base computer down with a base name that makes sense to you. I use xxx NavData where xxx is the quantity sold at the minor settlement. repeat this in at least 1 other wealth system. This way you have access to a few hundred NDs.
      5. take any opportunity to gather more NDs, little cubes laying around space stations and minor settlements.
    3. designate a ship as your hunting ship with a good MT
      1. you will want, good shields, warp capable (long distances not required), decent weapons
      2. keep only the basic necessities in your ship, no materials that may attract the attention of system authorities / pirates. Otherwise they will pester/distract you from the goal
      3. take any opportunity to gather more nds, little cubes laying around space stations and minor settlements.
      4. good multitool is helpful for the planets with aggressive sentinels but when I’m hunting I avoid any entanglement the distracts me from the MT Hunt.
    4. MT Hunting (when starting out)
      1. Warp to a system go to SS and check MT class, if it’s not A class then move to next system. I only say this for newbies, you can hunt MTs in SSs with B & C’s but has the class goes down it can get more complex hunting for an S class on the planets.
      2. When the A class is found reload a save on each planet and check the SS for the dominate MT. Note: generally it will not show the 2ndary MT on the planet. The 2ndary MT is the MT that shows up in cabinet once you reload your save either at the planet you are on or other planet in the system or space station.
      3. If you have checked all the dominate tools for each planet and if non of them are what you are looking for then you can bail on that system. However, you may want to find the dominate tool on each planet even if it’s not the style you want to find. The 2ndary tools can be the alien, experimental and/or anomalous MTs. This all about your tolerance for the repetitiveness and time.

So I think that is probably a good start for those that are new to NMS. I’m sure many will chime in with additional tips/tricks to help out.

These are all the S classes I’ve found in the past year or so.

FREIGHTERS, my newest

I missed out on a lot of great stuff, not playing the first several Expeditions. Here in the NMS Reddits, I saw lots of talk about freighters. Naturally I got curious about them. I chose one, then learned that there are two basic classes of freighters. The very common System Freighters, and there are a bunch to choose from. Then, there are the Capital Freighters. Now comes in three flavors, Sentinel, Venator and Pirate Dreadnought. I have flown in all three, and now, in each of their variations. Though, until today, never even one ‘S’ Class.
I was doing the time pulsing my starship around trying my best to scare up just one Organic Frigate. I went to my Pirate freighters bridge, thought better of taking my Capital ship in first, and short teleported to the Hangar Bay, jumped into a new Sentinel starship, launched, then opened the Galaxy Map. I chose a nearby Pirate controlled system. And, jumped. Arrived smack in the middle of a big battle, with a Pirate Dreadnought attacking a big Venator Resurgent freighter. Aw, why not… I flew right to the rear of the Pirate, shot up all its warp engines, then eased up into the Shield Gen channels, blew all of those out, got the message to go get or destroy the Pirate ship….as usual, ya have to dock in its landing bay just to see what class it is and all that. I did, saw it was a C and that one lost out instantly. I flew out and shot it to bits. Then, just for giggles, I thought to check out that big ol Resurgent. I have two in other saved games, but alas, never an S Class. When I landed, I used F to check the deck for its info. What?! An S class??!! COOL! I exited, called in my Pirate Freighter, landed back in the Resurgent, ran up to the command deck (it’s forward!) (ha!) and I was gonna buy it outright. BUT the game has other ideas. It let me trade mine for this one. Oh gee, a B class loaded up at 193 millions for this S class at 23 millions? HECK YES IT’S A DEAL! Units. Nanites. Quicksilver. I gots them! I now also have a lovely S Class Resurgent level Venator type Freighter! FINALLY! I HAVE ONE! Yeah all it takes is just stumbling on one, lucky as THAT! LOL! Thanks for listening in folks, this was fun!

I finally GOT ONE! Yaaaay ME! :oD
