New Player Seeking Advice

Hello everyone. I’m new to the game and feeling a bit lost. I’m currently on the ‘ALONE AMIDST THE STARS’ quest, and the last thing I did was talk with the priest. In my previous quest, I found a new ship, but it has a lot of broken parts that I can’t seem to fix. Should I focus on the quest or try to gather resources? I’ve looked for guides and tutorials on YouTube, but most of them are just gameplay videos. Any help or tips would be appreciated. Are Freighters just not meant to be used for travel?
I’ve started using my Freighter as my primary method to traverse a galaxy because I love the idea of having a massive mobile base that is able to scan every planet instantly to survey them. But sadly what I’ve noticed is it seems like there’s a 50/50 chance whether or not I spawn outside in space or glitched inside of a wall after making a jump….
