18 quintillion planets

Hi all, just had a realization that I thought was pretty cool. I’m sure someone else has also realized this at some point, and it may be well known already (feel free to remove if that’s the case), but this was news to me.

Anyway, we all know that No Man’s Sky has 18 quintillion planets. This number doesn’t come out of thin air, it’s what’s called the 64-bit integer limit, i.e. the largest number a 64-bit computer can store as an integer (a “whole” number). This is written as 264.

That, however, is old news and not the interesting thing I found today. You see, 18 quintillion, or exactly 264, it is also equal to 1616! Given the importance of that number in the game, I thought it was pretty cool that it appears here too 🙂

I hope I didn’t “discover” something that wasn’t already widely known, but, if you didn’t know this, I hope you found this interesting.

Cheers!

Ship hunting is one of my favorite parts of No Man's sky and it is NOT ruined

I don’t interact with like 50% of the games content anyway so if something optional like shipbuilding will make me upset I can just ignore it like I ignore pets and farming and auto miners and literally any space combat. I haven’t played the update yet but the one thing that I do hope for is for unmodified naturally generated ships be unmarked while visually customized ships have some kind of tag in the UI. But if not it’s not a big deal.
