Starfield's similarity to No Man's Sky should be a source of pride, not anger, for our community.

The fact a major game studio, responsible for such legendary RPGs as Skyrim and Fallout 3/4, took ideas from No Man’s Sky, should not be seen as a “copy” or “ripoff.” On the contrary, it’s a commendation and recognition of the huge achievement NMS had on the gaming industry.

I won’t even go to the fact that no game is a strict clone of another, and that Starfield took a lot of inspiration from other famous games, both of its own IP (Elder Scrolls, Fallout), and of other third party games such as Mass Effect, Star Citizen, and many others. Even focusing on what it specifically took from No Man’s Sky, it is good, not bad.

NMS was the first major game to do anything of its size and scope. I can think of small, and almost unknown indie games that delivered a mere part of what NMS did, such as Evochron’s seamless planetary landings, or going even further back, the Noctis series. These games are not well known for a reason. Despite their great ideas and innovaction, they didn’t become a major hit, didn’t find that breakthrough formula to make a core game loop and appeal to a mass audience. No Man’s Sky did. And it’s precisely because of its success that you see major studios reuse some of its ideas.

Bad games don’t get copied or emulated. They are forgotten, seen as a dead end. On the contrary, legendary games are analyzed, built upon, and their ideas carried on in completely different games. I remember when Terraria came out, everyone was complaining it’s a “rip off Minecraft.” Decades before that, when Duke Nukem 3D came out, people called it a “Doom Clone”. Such arguments were baseless then, and they are baseless now.

Regardless of how much a success Starfield will become (and I wholeheartedly wish it to become a great game, and plan to play it if it lives up to the hype), it was No Man’s Sky that enabled it to be what it is. No Man’s Sky was the first successful game of its class, and this alone earns it a lifetime achievements in the most legendary hits of the gaming industry. This is something that will never be erased or belittled, no matter how great later games are. Just as we still remember the original Doom, or Minecraft, as the first massively successful, genre-defining games of their respective genres, we will remember No Man’s Sky for being the pioneering visionary it has become.

🧑‍🚀EXPEDITION 7-LET'S GET A FEW THINGS STRAIGHT. 🚀

Read this carefully before you respond with a nasty comment

I have been reading post after post on reddit regarding people raging, complaining and having tantrums over this expedition. Despite the fact that this particular expedition is not for me, I still get annoyed at some of the complaints on here.

Look folks, HG can’t be everything and every game to every person. Over the the years they have certainly tried to include something for everyone.

I am not an expedition enthusiast. I have done a few but I don’t lay awake at night regretting the ones I skip.

It’s a totally seperate game mode so it’s not required material to play No Man’s Sky.

I think it’s totally fair for HG to add an expedition for hardcore players. How many Hardcore expeditions have we had in the past? The answer is none (to my knowledge) so I applaud HG for including that player base.

Regarding people that complain that special rewards are tied to expeditions, Yes they are. Why shouldn’t an expedition player get some awesome, unique rewards for completing a special event?

Special events reap special rewards.

Bottom line is, there are players who want a trophy for non participation. That’s not how it works.

If you want the darn whale cape and can’t live a quality life without it then play the expedition.

Expedition 7 is not for me, I admit and I’m ok for deciding not to continue with it. I don’t hate it, I’m not angry, disappointed or anything of the sort. It just doesn’t resonate with my style of play and the way in which I enjoy playing.

I am no less of a person for skipping /quitting. I have been playing NMS since release in 2016 on two platforms. I don’t know everything about the game and still ask questions but I’m not at all clueless either.

I have played every mode and the one I personally enjoy most is normal mode. I game to remove myself from my real world, hectic life. I want chill exploration and adventure. That’s me, it doesn’t have to be you. I respect everyone’s style of playing.

Now one last point before wrapping this up.

I suspect the majority of the players IMO, that are raging are new – newish players to the game.

For those players I have some friendly advice. You really should play through the missions the regular mode game has. It will guide you through most everything you need to know and reward you with items you will need later on.

Play in “Normal Mode” your first time.

If you have questions along your journey don’t hesitate to come on reddit and ask the No Man’s Sky Community. The vast majority of members are very helpful, patient, knowledgeable and friendly people. I personally love to help people when I can. Yes, you’ll run into a few nasty people but that’s life on or off line – Que Sera Sera, don’t sweat it.

There will be other expeditions. Don’t rage over one particular expedition. Especially because I’m sure this won’t be the last Perma-death style expedition. I suspect HG will cycle the expeditions through various modes and everyone will get their own slice of the happiness pie.

Again, I’m thrilled that players who do enjoy this mode of play are having great fun and getting some awesome rewards.

Get out there and crush it you hardcore animals! 😁👍

Peace and safe travels to you all. Sincerely, eE.

I love the new added depth to standing, frigates and trading!

I know the space stations and ship building are the highlights and everyone is talking about them, but I just wanted to share my love for some features that I seriously appreciate but aren’t really talked about:

First, I’ve always complained about the standing system being completely pointless. Even when Outlaws came out and gave us the ability to reset our standing, I kept thinking there was no point for it, apart from like one mission being locked off, it genuinely felt like the numbers you saw in your catalogue were completely detached from the actual gameplay. So I’m finally overjoyed that it has a genuine purpose now with discounts! Prices in station shops reflect your standing with the race and it tells you by how much! It’s a start I’d say, but a really impactful one too!

The guild now also has a physical presence and no longer feels like some imaginary concept that was also entirely detached from the game and only existed as a number in your catalogue. Now they’re actually in the game (I still haven’t figured out what determines which one of the 3 appear in stations) and raising standing with them is actually really encouraging since they give you some really useful items either for free or at a discount. Increasing standing with them is also much easier now with the new donation mechanic rather than doing missions.

Next, the frigate expeditions once again always felt like an imaginary thing; you sent them out on expeditions, waited a few hours, and they’d say what happened and you had to pretend it was true while they gave you the loot. Now there’s an actual consequence that you get to be involved in. Instead of the whole thing being a passive money making thing, they occasionally ask you for advice or help protect them from enemies. One time I was asked to warp to their location and land on a frigate so I could read a message they found and they asked me what to do… turns out the language I knew directly affected how much of the text was readable and I could make an informed decision, so knowing the language has more meaning as well!

And lastly, the trading. It was something I knew existed but 100% ignored. But now the economy scanner has a new function where you can choose to detect economy surges and it’ll tell you which system to invest what in, and it’s on a timer so it’s like a little mini game to get rich. Trading is actually kinda fun now that there’s an actual guided mechanic around it.

THIS IS UNEXPECTABLE

I paid $20 of my hard earned dollars on this game 6 years ago on sale and grew up with this game watching the devs put I’m so much time, given so many updates for free and having a vibrant community to play with and I have to wait a whole extra few days to play this orbit update??! I’m selling my xbox, PC, house, and am moving on to be a nomad, maybe that’ll teach those lazy devs a lesson and they’ll get their updates pushed out faster, irregardless of Microsoft having to approve and push the update themselves, and also irregardless that HG has zero point zero to do with that
