Player Community - Thank you

So having played a number of multiplayer/MMO games, I have found that most player communities (especially veteran players) are not kind toward new players. For some there appears to be no greater joy than destroying some unsuspecting newb.

It was therefore a pleasant surprise when some random player gave me 150 mil worth of trade goods! While this may be nothing to a veteran player, for me it was hitting the lottery! Not sure who the player was but wanted to just generally say thank you to the community.

It seems that this is actually pretty common for No Man’s Sky. I can say it is a welcome change to usual player interaction I have experienced in the past.

BTW – Really like this game. Lots to learn though. And so much to explore.

TIL: Nintendo has a history of impossible space exploration game ports.

I’m so surprised by No Man’s Sky on the Switch. It’s playable and not really all that limited. If, as Hello Games teased, multiplayer could get added, it would be an even more amazing feat.

Will I be sticking with Switch as the main driver for NMS? I’m not sure. It’s very serviceable though.

But, as I was looking into inspirations for No Man’s Sky today, I came across Elite. I had no idea, but Elite was ported to the NES. They had to do some work around in the cartridge. I know the OG Elite isn’t the same as games like Elite: Dangerous or No Man’s Sky…but man seeing 3D graphics on an NES (drawn wire frames) is interesting..and the game is still open ended and large in scope. It probably blew people’s minds!

I’m really happy Hello Games did port to the Switch. It’s a very nice way to dip my toes into this amazing, amazing game.

How Updates Work In No Man's Sky - A Guide for Noobs

It’s update time, so I thought I’d post my “guide for noobs” on how this all works here on the subreddit.

There’s nowhere really to watch, necessarily, other than this subreddit and Sean’s Twitter (Twitter.com/NoMansSky).

It’s actually a bit obnoxious, to be honest. Here’s how it usually plays out:

Sean Murray will tweet a really vague, innocuous emoji or something. The tweet will be screenshotted and posted here a dozen or so times, usually with little to not accompanying context.

For the next ~3-4 days (depending on Sean’s mercy), this subreddit will be literally nothing but an endless stream of screenshots of his post, other posts guessing (usually all guessing the same 3-4 things), memeing his post, with the occasional actually interesting conversational thread thrown in here and there for flavor.

Then the update will actually drop – Sean will tweet it, there will be coverage of it on all the big gaming/tech sites, on all the No Man’s Sky social channels, etc. You won’t be able to miss it.

Then the next ~1-2 days will be people coming onto the subreddit to ask if the update dropped, when it’s going to drop, why hasn’t it dropped yet, is this game worth jumping into, etc.

It’s usually ~a week or two after a major update before this subreddit is tolerable again.

The mods do an admirable job trying to corral the crazy, but it’s just an impossible task.

TL;DR – keep an eye on Sean Murray’s Twitter account [it’s (at)NoMansSky]. If/when he tweets something cryptic, unsub from this subreddit but keep an eye on his account or your favorite tech/gaming site. ~2 weeks after the update hits, it’s safe to rejoin the subreddit.

I'm trying to stay unspoiled but I gotta gush

So, I’m trying to stay unspoiled and slowly play through No Man’s Sky at my own pace for the first play through or so. I jump into a new system and start looking at the planets and see one labeled, “Cabled.” And I’m like, “Wat.” I just gotta go look. I’m thinking, “It’s really close to the star, maybe that has to do with it…?”

I swoop down and I instantly get goosebumps. WTF ARE THOSE?! The balls, the war of the world looking walker-ish things. So many ball looking things! I’m instantly getting flash backs to The Matrix and how the surface looked then. ARE THERE PEOPLE IN THOSE BALLS?!

I just fly along the surface, too scared to land. There’s little nodules on the sides of some of those balls, are they lasers? If I land, are they gonna cut my ship to ribbons?

Finally, it cuts over from night to day and I get up the courage to land. I’m terrified that I’m going to like, wake up the planet and the entire thing is going to blast me into smithereens for daring to land on the planet of the balls. However, I land without issue and quickly start scanning the balls. “Inorganic material” and “Plantlife” and I’m like… “Huh. Okay. Well, maybe that’s just a limitation of the game engine. It could still like, wake the giant war-of-the-worlds looking MFs if I poke one.”

Eventually, I do get up the courage to poke one. It’s at this point my relief washes over me as I’m not immediately incinerated. Just a funny looking rock as far as the game is concerned. Okay. Fair enough.

Though, now, in my head I’m inventing lore upon lore about how that world came to be. I still steer clear of it, just because it’s still creepy AF but it’s been a while since a game has triggered my imagination so hard that I legitimately felt fear.

I still wonder… Could that be a Korvax hive world? A world given over completely to computation and memory storage? When I mined that one ball, did I incinerate the stored memories of millions of Korvax? Did I kill digital Korvax babies?!

Overwhelming steep learning curve for new players

Another Starfield refugee here finally taking the plunge into No Man’s Sky.

I made it to the first space station. I’m loving the exploration and customized difficulty settings but I’m feeling overwhelmed with all the tutorials, knowledge stones, ship fuel, outposts and resources.

What are the most useful materials I should buy?

What’s the deal with the Discoveries tab? It’s just uploading scans for Nanites?

Any advice on the best early game upgrades?

Flight controls feel pretty weird on Xbox controller. I felt like I was going to crash into the space station lol. Is there a sweet spot for sensitivity settings?

Any advice or new player tips is appreciated.

Motivation after a certain point in the story was suddenly gone. Am I the only one? SPOILER for the ...

Am I the only one who lost all motivation to explore when I reached the point in the story where you realise that all you see is just supposed to be simulated and not real?

It’s not even the repeating assets on animals and plants. I had specific things in mind I wanted to do before that happened. But after that point all the things I wanted to do lost their appeal. It was suddenly, right after I reached that point. I felt a strange sense of meaninglessness when I thought about continuing to explore the universe. It lost all immersion for me because it is just a program in canon.

I played for about 2 months frequently. It was one of my favourite games ever but right then I suddenly realised it is a huge waste of time to continue because it is just pixels in canon. All motivation was suddenly gone. I’ve never experienced that before and it makes me sad because I loved this game. But now when I log in I just see pixels. I cannot immerse myself in the world anymore.

Best farms in 2024?

Haven’t played in a hot minute, but have about 200 hours in the game. Got back into it pretty recently, and was wondering what the best things to grow are as of the Orbital Update. I read that “supercomputers” are great for getting units (4 mil apiece …
