General Gaming Communities vs No Man's Sky Community

First allow me to give you some brief background. I have been a gamer for longer than I’d like to admit. Let just say that I played Atari when it first came out, lol. I didn’t connect with any online communities until the Playstation 3 came along. I have also played on PC primarily once I was old enough and employed enough to buy my first gaming rig.

I have participated in some MMO games, I have moderated forums and I had my own forum and website at one time.

I got away from all that because I found that forums, message boards, social media groups etcetera.. can be extremely toxic and full of malevolent people.

I have a thick skin but I’m also a human with a heart. It can be difficult at times to shake off some of the things people do and say. So, I unplugged and went back to hermit mode game play.

Then one day I saw an advertisement for a game in development – No Man’s Sky. I followed the title for approximately 2 years before it released. I liked the sound of it. They originally designed it to have a very minimalistic multi player feature. You could possibly run into other players but we couldn’t interact. Well, that was just my speed.

Of course multiplayer has drastically evolved since then and that’s awesome for those who enjoy the full experience.

I still choose to keep “Public Multi player” turned off but I’m thrilled I am able to invite trusted friends to explore with me.

2016- No Man’s Sky hits the shelves. I bought two copies, PC & Playstation.

People had their tantrums and also legitimate complaints. I continued to play as I was 80% certain that the developers would restructure the game to accommodate the player base more. I am glad that came to fruition.

Recently, I decided to give some NMS Reddit communities a try. I have interacted with players via YouTube for quite a while and found the NMS players to be very helpful, welcoming and over all a friendly bunch.

I have not been disappointed with my Reddit NMS experience thus far. Yes, there’s plenty of dirt bags but that’s par for the course with any public community but overall, The No Man’s Sky Community as I said already, has proven to be primarily full of awesome, like minded people who have a passion to share their knowledge, creations and anything else the love about the game. I didn’t think an online community of this quality existed anywhere.

I’m very pleased I was proven wrong by many of you. Thank you to the good people for being you and forgive me at times for being me. Outside of the online environment I’m actually an easy going, friendly person. Online….well, sometimes my battle scars show. I treat good people very well. I treat dirt bags like dirt bags. I think there are times I should probably keep my comments to myself when responding to hecklers/trolls but it’s in my DNA to stand up for myself, my loved ones and friends.

It’s a positive attribute that certainly has some negative aspects to it as well. The trick is, I need to find a balance regarding that.

Anyway, enough said. Thanks again NMS travelers. ❤️ P. Wyatt

PvP On by default makes no sense.

I just researched and it seems that No Man’s Sky offers no rewards for killing other players. I just read that you can’t loot other player’s graves or get loot from their ships.

I just bought the game cause I was really, really hyped. I went to a featured base cause hey, it’s featured and it looks amazing!

I spend all my credits that I got from scrapping a couple A-Class ships I found into 150 navigational data (in order to find more ships to scrap) and a bunch of resources to build a base and upgrade my gear. I had no weapons other than the mining beam, and no shields.

I enter the base.

I see a player. I look at them. I prepare to do the hand waving emote. He kills me before I can do it. Chat says I died due to multi-tool combat.

No biggie, I can just grab my items from my grave.

The player searches for me at spawn. Kills me again. Then skedaddles out of there with their ship.

I grab my second grave. No items. I look for my first grave, the one that’s supposed to have my items in it. Not there. There’s random terrain there now. Did they add terrain in to de-spawn my grave? My entire inventory, gone.

Now I don’t even have 50 ferrite dust to repair my now broken multi-tool.

And according to a Google search, this player gained nothing from this.

Why does No Man’s Sky have PvP against everyone enabled by default without telling the players, with the possibility to lose your entire inventory, even though no one gains anything from it?

It just seems like No Man’s Sky is encouraging spawn-sniping and griefing for annoying-new-player’s sake. This is such a bizarre design decision!

I also play WoW and engage in world PvP, sometimes winning, sometimes losing, and even this game which does reward you from PvP has the following features:

  1. Rewards for PvP. PvP isn’t guaranteed to be just in order to anger you.

  2. Reward the winner, don’t delete the entire inventory of the loser.

  3. PvP is disabled by default, and it’s an opt-in feature because not everyone likes PvP and when you are in PvP your player yells “For the Horde!”/”For the Alliance!” so that you very clearly know when PvP is on. You also get an in-game icon when PvP is on so that you know that hey, you could get attacked at any moment.

  4. Since the game was built with PvP in mind, there are certain rules for when and how you can or can’t enable and disable PvP so that you can’t just disable it if you feel like you’re losing.

No Man’s Sky has none of these things, in fact has the opposite, and it just seems like they added PvP just cause, without giving much thought about the actual gameplay aspect and experience of PvP.

Isn’t it bizarre? Opt-out, inventory wipe, non-notified, un-asked for PvP.

As a new player, I shouldn’t have to google how to disable PvP, or whether or not the game has PvP, or whether or not you lose your items, and even worse, I shouldn’t have to discover the answer to these questions without even googling it, because it makes the game less enjoyable.

PSA: If you will add a biofuel reactor to your base, I'll fuel it when I visit....

Nothing more frustrating than teleporting into a base for, say some quick Mould, and having to fly to space, dock with the station, and teleport back home.

If folks would add a reactor just in case things go south on their power supply, I have zero problem fueling the reactor with some Carbon while I’m there

I just thought about this because I’m on one of the planets with every glyph, and I keep running into bases with no power. I’ll hook ya up, it’s only fair. 😁
