Got the game recently after eyeing it (off and on) since release

It has gotten wayyyy better since I last saw gameplay. I have been obsessed since I first opened it lol. Stumbled on an S rank starship pretty early on and that enabled me to progress pretty quickly. Currently taking lots of detours to find weird anomalies (btw, do those planets only appear in indium systems?). Should I prioritize the main questlin? Like, does finishing it give me good things, or can I just meander through the galaxy without missing better opportunities?
