Radio reception is inconsistent and affected by several factors.

Compared to FM, AM radio tends to cover a much larger area. The time of day also plays affects reception. Generally, reception will be better after sunset, when it is not unusual to hear AM stations from hundreds of miles away.

Reception of local stations is intermittent and sound is inferior, with a lot of static and tinny sound quality.

FM stations offer better sound quality, but FM stations' range is much smaller compared to AM stations. Moving the radio to a different position will often improve the reception. In some rural areas there. May be no FM stations.

Sound quality not good -- there is a lot of background static.

It’s very important to note that many electronic devices in your home can emit electronic interference that makes listening to distant / weaker stations more difficult. Do not place your radio next to other electronic devices.

    Cute little radio
My grandmother's not a TV person, and recently she's had to go to a nursing home for rehabilitation after a serious illness. When I would visit, I could see that she was feeling down because she wasn't interested in the TV there, and she usually listens to her radios at home but obviously they're too big and bulky to have there. She was just staring at the ceiling all day long. So I looked for a small radio here on Amazon, and this came up. It's perfect for her small room and does exactly what we need it to. It has a red light indicator that tells you when you've tuned in to a station all the way which is really helpful, because if you have experience with radios you know that tuning it just right can be challenging sometimes. The sound quality is good. The only thing I will say is we obviously leave it quieter so it plays loud enough for her to hear, but not enough to disturb her neighbor residents(she likes it to play 24/7, so we didn't want them to tell her to turn it off). The volume slider has a limited low range before it starts getting loud, so for people that wanna blast it that's great. For people that want it quieter, you'll have to turn it ever so slightly to get to that sweet spot you want it at, but otherwise, for the purpose of playing music, it does this very well. I can't speak on it's other technical purposes such as use as an emergency radio or anything. My grandmother's very happy with this and it lifted her spirits 100% which is a win for me. I actually think I will get one for myself eventually. Small and lightweight. Great sound. Handle is very convenient. Tune light indicator is amazing. My photo makes it look bigger than it is. It's small, cute, and perfect for a small room with limited space, or to travel with. For the price, I'm very happy with it.

I needed a battery powered radio to use while I work outside in my yard. I didn't want bluetooth or an MP3 player or a bunch of other stuff...just a radio. This is the perfect size. It works on AA batteries, and that's all I use now. I have a lot of rechargeable ones. It has a large speaker for it's size, and produces loud, clear sound. The tuner is great and can get the marginal stations that other radios can't. I've had it for 9 months now and it's still going strong. I'm thinking of buying a second one for my ranch.

Great little radio! I was happy to find one without a digital screen or alarm clock on it. I just wanted to hit a switch and hear baseball games. This fit the bill. Plenty loud enough to fill my 400sq ft studio apt without sounding like a trash can. And, it looks nice.

    Pros:
    - Seemingly solid construction, mostly plastic with metal speaker grille.
    - Good reception, even indoors away from windows. (Having to turn the entire unit to receive some AM signals is typical for this type of design.)
    - Big tuning knob is easy to turn with pleasant resistance.
    - Tuning LED is responsive which makes up for the somewhat inaccurate dial. (i.e. 90.5 FM may appear more like 100.1-3 FM)
    - Portable enough for things like car-camping, campfires, tailgating, etc.
    - Great sound quality. A bit tinny at high volumes - rubber feet would've helped.
    - Looks cool on your shelf. Nice retro aesthetics.

    Cons:
    - Not at all water resistant! Had it in the bathroom for a shower (not in the shower, of course) and saw lots of condensation forming on the speaker cone. Likely harmless once but the device is clearly not designed for use in wet areas.
    - A bit hefty. Probably wouldn't carry this around in my backpack or in a survival/hiking kit. There are plenty of pocketable radios that fit this use case better. The 4 AA's would make it even heavier.

Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2021
I bought two of these radios to use as monitor receivers for a broadcast station's Emergency Alert System(EAS). All the radio has to do in this application is receive a station off the air, and route its audio to the EAS encoder via its earphone jack. Something any analog radio receiver should di very well, right?

I tested the radios as radios and they worked fine. I did notice that the radio has some sort of augmented tuning, and seemed to tune in steps, especially on FM. But when I got the radios close to the EAS encoder, the audio started to cut out, both on AM and FM. It got worse when I connected the earphone jack to the encoder. Thinking that there was some sort of EMI being conducted out of the EAS encoder, I added an inline hash filter of my own design, and this actually made the problem worse. I have never seen a simple radio behave this way. And lots of broadcast stations use inexpensive radios like this as monitoring receivers.

I eventually went to a thrift store and picked up a couple of older radios that worked just fine for this application. Curious as to what circuitry this radio used, I opened one up (see picture) Although not surprised to find most of the guts of a modern radio on one chip, I was astounded by the almost total lack of any kind of frequency selective components. No IF transformers. No ceramic filters I could find. Only one inductor besides the AM bar antenna. And very surprisingly, no tuning capacitor (The tuning control is the pot in the middle of the PC board) So apparently, this radio is some sort of direct conversion receiver, or some sort of software defined radio. I don't know what the chip is, but I do know there are at least a couple AM/FM receiver chips available that use conventional superhetrodyne circuitry. In any case, this solved the mystery of why this radio works so poorly-- it has no selectivity components. If it is hit by any kind of broadband noise (like a poorly shielded digital device, or a room full of them), it quickly overloads the radio's front end. For those who were reporting in other reviews that this radio was intermittently cutting out, it was probably broadband noise causing front end overload.

Despite this flaw, they are fine as an ordinary radio, and I will keep them for this purpose. I just won't use them an any environment with a lot of electronic noise.

UPDATE: I decided to try one of these radios as a monitoring receiver at the radio station the EAS project is for. Much to my pleasant surprise, it worked fine there. And this with the radio about 100 feet from an FM transmitting antenna radiating about 100 watts of RF power. I am not noticing any meaningful desense from the transmitted signal. So now, I need to find out what is different about my home environment that might be causing the original issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT LITTLE RADIO
Reviewed in Canada on March 30, 2024
The Panasonic RF-2400D AM/FM Radio is a great little radio. It is small so doesn't have a large footprint taking up room on the table. Good sound and volume, much better than a clock radio. It is simple to operate and gets lots of stations on both AM and FM. It's lightweight and has a handle so easy to carry it anywhere. Runs on electricity or batteries. I have only had the radio for approximately a week but so far I really like it. I am thinking of getting one for my son as he wants one of his own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfectamente simple

5.0 out of 5 stars If you're a genuine transistor radio junkie, buy this
Reviewed in India on August 30, 2016
One of the best gadget purchases I've made in recent years. Expensive but worth every rupee I paid. Tidy, compact, elegant design. Lightweight yet feels sturdy enough. Nice big tuning knob but, more importantly, good signal reception. Relative to the size of the unit itself the speaker is surprisingly powerful and clear. It is made for the US market so the AC power cord is no use here unless you have a step-down transformer and plug adapter. But this was not a concern for me since portability is important for me, so I only use this with batteries anyway. Would've been great if it had short wave. Can't have everything, I guess. I wish I'd found this radio earlier instead of messing around with cheaper, inferior products.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gran compra y de muy buena calidad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Versatility, good sound, simple operation in tuner locking AM/FM family radio
Reviewed in Canada on September 4, 2023
This compact wall/battery powered single 4" speaker radio has great tone and volume control for its compact size. The digital FM lock keeps fiddly stations in tune and steady volume. Battery power apparently is long-lasting (not tested yet), so the radio is portable and works in power-failures! Tuning is easy and obvious with a highlighted bar and locks well. The volume, around the side and behind the tuning know is a bit of a nuisance as is the sliding on/off-FM-AM 'switch" which is a single glider above the tuner frequency bar, which takes getting used to because the radio is not heavy and one-handed on/off, FM, AM control takes a bit of practice. However, compared with radios generally, it is a bargain and a very good quality unit that works well even with weak radio signals.
