NMS HOT POST 2023/02/23

For those complaining the last 2 updates were lackluster

Let's have a little more tact.

  1. There's nothing wrong with expressing wishes and desires
  2. Those complaining obviously still love the game, and aren't hating on it as a whole
  3. We can communicate more graciously.

HG definitely reads this sub. We know that. NMS came out 6.5 years ago. We paid $60 brand new. I bet a lot of people got it on sale, but let's just say we paid full price. How many other games, ever, release major content updates for free, no subscriptions, no egregious micro-transactions, and as regularly (despite never committing to a schedule (also note how they're never late to this non schedule))? Pretty much 0. None that I can think of.

Quick analogy of how I view our current situation:

Let's say I give a customer a quote on building them a house. It'll be $600,000 and have all these cool features. When I finish building it's very obvious it went poorly. There was even a flood halfway through and the foundation had to be re poured. The customer is unhappy, but in good faith I show up a few months later and say "I'm going to redo some rooms and add a couple of things. No charge."

A few months later I come back again, "New appliances, new windows and a garage! No charge"

And again…. and again…

A few years go by, and now I've far exceed the time and effort originally billed. The $600,000 budget for the home build has been more than spent. Yes, a lot of that was scrapped, but even the finished product is now worth more than $600,000.

A few months later, though, "I created a virtual reality experience of your home so you can enjoy it however you want. No charge".

And a few months later, I come back again "I made some additions to your neighbors house, same as here. No charge"

Fast forward to this last year…. I come back a couple times and say "Some of the stuff I added isn't quite up to my expectations. I know you've gotten used to me adding new cool gadgets when I show up, but before I add more I need to add some supports to the floor, add a wheelchair ramp out front, fresh coat of paint on some of those rooms I worked in a lot as I might have dinged up the walls a little in the overhaul process. No charge".

Now I want you to put yourself in the homeowner's shoes and imagine yourself saying "You should have brought me that entertainment system! The 8k projector with 15.1 surround sound and haptic butt-cheek feedback to embed in all my couch cushions!"

It's kinda crazy… Let's be honest. We've paid for the product, we have more than what we paid for, there is no agreement or statement of intent other than "I'll be back with more". At this point we have no right to have **expectations**. (elephant in the room here is there are still some things not in today's product that were originally promised. I think that ship has sailed, and we've received a lot more of something different. The game took a different path, so let's just leave it at that)

But don't confuse that with **desires** or **wishes**.

We could say "Next time he comes back to add to the house it would be cool if we got that new entertainment system!"

We shouldn't say "Next time he comes back to add to the house he should bring that new entertainment system!"

TL;DR

This post may seem superfluous but I think we forget to have perspective on things. Simple phrasing can change a person's entire mood for a day, or a week. Imagine HG coming to read this sub and all they see are "WTF, why aren't we getting ACTUAL content?" after they've worked so hard? That doesn't make them feel good or motivated to continue when they could justifiably say "This is the last update. Later doods". What would make them feel good is us being thankful while also daydreaming about future content. Seeing your playerbase riff off your game with new ideas is very motivating for creators. 🙂

So let's continue to share what we hope to see, but let's do it with tact and be gracious for what we're continuing to get for free.

I've been absolutely loving the Leviathan expedition

No sarcasm – genuinely been having lots of fun. This is my first time in a harder difficulty/permadeath playthrough (I’m new to the game)

As soon as it spawned me in and I discovered how fast my hazard protection was dropping, and how little sodium I was getting from the plants, I was having that good kind of gaming stress fun. Spent 30 minutes meticulously gathering materials while ducking in and out of caves, reached my ship, realised I couldn’t repair, and checked the milestones. Laughed at myself for wasting 30 minutes gathering all those resources and yeeted myself off a cliff

Was very quickly attacked by pirates, and since I didn’t want to spend my precious sodium I was a little lax on repairing on my shields. Vesper Sail proceeded to get damaged, and needed Deuterium to repair. Since this was my source of launch thruster recharge and pulse drive efficiency, I was extremely amused at how I’d gone and made this harder for myself right off the bat. No worries, to the Anomaly to grab a medium refiner – wait, it cost 100 salvaged technologies??? Absolutely cackling at this curve ball, I got to work on gathering those. I’d got about 50 when I changed planets for a change of scenery, and got attacked by pirates again. They were nice enough to drop a repair kit this time

Quickly discovered S class upgrades costing 6k+ nanites from merchants, so I took my time exploring planets to scan all the animals. Flew around aggressive Sentinel planets checking for Pillars, to sneak up to them and disable the Sentinels before I went exploring. As soon as I got a Scatter Blaster and a couple of shield upgrades I was brave enough to fight them for the full 5 waves. All along I’ve been taking the time to gather and turn in Ancestral Memories and Liquid Sun to Polo – it was great to see the memory fragments upgrade to B class so far

Pirate attacks were still stressful, so I grabbed an economy scanner from the Anomaly, saved up several million units, then went and camped out in a pirate system to try and grab an S class Solar. Had terrible luck with S class spawns and was getting impatient, when a ridiculously adorable A class 7-winged Rasa spawned in, that was an upgrade in both tech and inventory slots, and within my price range. Grabbed it, upgraded it, went to hunt some pirates

I’ve genuinely enjoyed the expedition forcing me to take my time and avoid risks – being careful around hazardous plants, not angering Sentinels when I’m not in the position to fight them, and carefully avoiding the worm nests on infested planets. I’ve not been racing through and treating it like a checklist, which I kinda did with the previous two reduxes. Each upgrade has been worked for and felt super rewarding, and any good luck finds from buried caches or from memory fragments has been far more exciting

I’ve just made it to the 5th iteration with every milestone in the previous parts completed, and I’ve managed not to get myself killed so far. I’m looking forward to unlocking the scrambled milestones and seeing what I need to do, and ultimately completing the whole thing

I’m very inspired to start my own fresh permadeath playthrough after this!

TIL digging holes doesn't save you from a tornado

Started a permadeath run shortly before the latest expedition, restarted it at the weekend. About 12 hours in, I’d landed on an extreme radiation planet, spotted dormant storm crystals and decided to wait for the storm because that’s serious cash for the early game.

“I’ll be fine. I have a radiation-protection upgrade and uranium to fuel it.”

“OK, storm is here and the crystals are just over there, off to get them”

“Hey, there’s more just over the hill. I’ll just run and get them.”

“Time to head back to the ship.”

“Oh. That’s a tornado coming.”

“I’m not going to make it. Time to dig a hole.”

“This is a nice long, deep hole. I should be fine.”

“Why can’t I move?”

“I’m being pulled against the roof of the tunnel.”

“I’m being pulled backwards along the tunnel.”

“I’m being pulled out of the tunnel.”

“Help.”

“I think I’m a long way up in the air now but I can’t see the ground through all the wind and orange dust.”

“I’ve been up here a while now. Better recharge the anti-radiation module.”

“If this keeps up, I’m going to run out of uranium and die of exposure while still up in the air.”

“If this eventually lets me go, I hope I spot the ground before I hit it.”

I did spot the ground in time. But that was intense.
