It's okay to not like 4.0.

I’m not usually one to write down my grievances with video games, but the release of 4.0 was so disappointing I feel I need to get up on my soapbox and give my opinion, especially since others are telling those of us against the 4.0 update that how we feel is an overreaction.

I installed NMS when it was added to game pass, and since then I’ve gotten 500+ hours under my belt as an interloper. I’ve learned the ins and outs of this game. I’ve hunted for my perfect ship, spent hours reloading for an elusive S-Class freighter, and figured out adjacency bonuses to really unlock my gear’s full potential. Every update I’ve played has had me singing praise for NMS, and 4.0 sounded like it would be no different. It promised a streamlined UI, higher level caps, and major QoL changes. After playing it I feel lied to. 4.0 did not feel like the step forward it was supposed to be. Instead, it was more like three big steps back.

The new inventory system completely ruined the gear I spent so long finding, leveling, and perfecting. Over 2/3 of my tech upgrades were removed from my gear, upgrades I spent hours hunting for down in the depths of derelict freighters and across the galaxies space stations were rendered completely useless. I’ve seen people saying that we didn’t need our maxed out gear, and that this change wasn’t a big deal, and maybe they’re partly right. We didn’t need maxed gear, but we wanted it, so we put in the extra time and effort to level up our gear and perfect it and make it ours. Now it’s all gone, and the time and effort we spent is wasted.

To add insult to injury, the new UI makes it harder to try and salvage what I can from my equipment. It feels like a total downgrade from the legacy UI. The inventory tabs were cleaner, felt much better to use, and moving stuff around in them was efficient and easy. The new one-page inventory feels claustrophobic, and the page scrolls too fast on console to move anything around effectively. It’s been a pain in the ass to try and fix my stuff with this new “streamlined” UI, and I’m wishing I could switch it back.

This update broke my heart. I’ve loved playing this game, exploring its vast galaxies on my quest through the cosmos and leaving my small mark on the wonderful worlds I’ve visited, but I feel like I cant play the game in its current state. I sincerely hope Hello Games will do what they can to try and fix this, and in the future think about both new and old players when making updates.

As a final word, if you aren’t happy with 4.0, please don’t use it as an excuse to be rude to or harass the NMS devs. If you are messaging them, remember that they are real people with real feelings. With that being said, I’m done here.

Phoenix out.

Some pictures I'm proud of

Some pictures I'm proud of

This are some photos of my travels in NMS. I’m playing for the third time and I think I get it this time. I drifted away at roughly 20hs the other two playthroughs, I guess I was overwhelmed with the infiniteness of the universe and a certain feeling of procedural “sameness” that lost my attention. But this time, with some mods in, man, I’m loving it! totally focused and chill, taking things as they come (as you may have guessed I like to play it high). Also I’m really digging photo mode, that’s a first in my entire gaming life.

Does anyone else think this game would do wonders with AI npcs? I mean, Hello Games is all about procedural world building, it would be the next logical step, wouldn’t it?

While I think ships should get an interior (looking at you, haulers) I think it'd be a good start to add a new ship class that features an interior, with turrets, and multiple seats. Maybe a gunship class

It’s always bothering me that large ships like the hauler don’t have an interior that I can walk around in. Now I understand that the procedural generation would cause developing an interior to be hard especially with many ships containing many different assets and bodies but I think that hello Games should start off with developing a new ship that features a cockpit an interior, one or two turrets and multiple seats.

Having a ship like this brings the potential to have bounty missions where we can hunt down wanted aliens for rewards

Gunships can feature a new module that allows turrets to fire without a pilot, giving us 4 guns to use instead of 2. Like the autopilot with our mech.

I would love to have my ship fly on autopilot to a planet while roaming around my interior. Imagine playing VR and making your ship fly to a certain planet and while you wait you sit down somewhere on your ship. I would definitely take the time to travel to a planet rather than pulsing everywhere if that was the case. Hell even put that mechanic onto our freighters. I would love to walk around a moving ship

Would Anyone Else Be Down For Crashed Frigate Exploration?

Would Anyone Else Be Down For Crashed Frigate Exploration?

So, Frigates, right?

Most of us have probably not been inside one since we stopped having to repair them, and repairing them wasn’t a lot of fun — just walking around an empty ship until you reach the thing, feed it materials, ship is fixed. It’s incredibly dull, and the moment we all discovered how to prevent ships from taking damage, most of us never wanted to set foot on a frigate again.

Yet the ships themselves are quite interesting. Bridges, ladders, engine rooms, cannons, multiple floors, they have a lot of parts on them, and they’re actually quite nice to look at, they’re just hopelessly empty with nothing to do or interact with on them. The engine rooms alone are pretty badass (and I wish we could jump out of them, but there’s an invisible wall).

Turning them into an activity might be fun though. If you could find crashed frigates, it would be an excuse to utilize these cool ship designs in a way that we might actually appreciate them. Add an enemy or two in them, a malfunctioning Sentinel that goes “boo” when you try to loot a crate, keep us on our toes.

Besides minor rewards like nanites and parts that can sell for units, I would also like to propose two more interesting rewards: once you “finish” the damaged frigate exploration, you would gain either the ability to repair it and add it to your fleet, or to salvage a usable part from it. The salvaged part could be used to modify one of your existing frigates, replacing one of its qualities — so if one of your fleet’s Exploration ships has “Malfunctioning Shield Generators” for -2 combat, maybe you can use a part you salvaged off a crashed Frigate to turn that into “Radar Array” for +4 exploration, letting you keep a ship that you might otherwise have dismissed.
