NMS HOT POST 2023/06/20

To the Expedition players …

To the players who label their bases things like “xxxx resource, teleport, gamma” and provide useful materials, and try to help your fellow players :

Cheers to you. Your work and contributions are appreciated by those of use without the time and experience.

To the players who do things like build bases around sentinel ships and dig holes under the autophages:

You can eat corn the long way…

A few Things I would like to see added in the future.

Crash Landing places, Say you are in a fight with pirates in space but and they get your ship down to critical health. The engines start to go and you have to try and make a crash landing on a nearby planet. It would play out exactly like the beginning of the game sort of. Have you enter the atmosphere and lose slight control of your ship, having to guide it down to a place to crash land. Then when you hit the ground you begin the quest of having to repair it.

This would set up a fun and natural narrative for adventure and exploration as it may force you to go to planets you would normally pass up. If pirates shot you down you could even have a timer until they come and search for your wreckage to finish you off and take your cargo. You could make it so you need to hide your crash site so they do not spot you too.

Infected Frigates, add the possibility that some of your frigates come back from missions “infected” like the derelict frigates you can find floating in space. Forcing you to go investigate what happened to the crew of your frigate and cleansing the infection upon reach some sort of core. I think it if balanced right it could make things a little more interesting and adventure oriented in that department.

Amphibious Tanks Exocraft, For the longest time I have wanted to have a tank exocraft with treaded tires. Something akin to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-9uzLBtMtY. Make it so you can go through water on the surface but just very slowly like the amphibious tanks the military uses. A tank like that would just be fun to bounce through desert biomes and swamps.

Hive Mind Planets, Infected planets that have turned into giant living super organisms. Meaning that whenever you attack or mine something on this planet that is “infected” the entire ecosystem trys to kill you. Like it is trying to remove an infection or virus. I got this idea from a long time favorite sci fi game Unreal 2. In the game you land on a planet that has had life on it all fuse into a single organism that now covers the entire planet. From the game: “Acheron is the strangest planet in the sector. It’s a T-class world where the surface is covered by a single gigantic organism. Izanagi Corporation is slowly killing the creature as it terraforms the planet. The Izanagi forces have converged on a single dig site–perhaps an artifact has been found.”

I suggest having these infected planets in some systems, when landing on one you have to make your way to the center of the planet through a cave/dungeon that spawns on the surface. Once you reach the core you can destroy it which will make everything on the planet stop trying to kill you and become passive or normal towards you. Also have the planets shoot off infected “pods” to nearby worlds. When the pod hits the world it creates a biome of the infected planet which the player can use as a quest starting point to track down the infected planet. Also have more infected biomes spawn unless the planet core is destroyed.

Distant Smoke, Have billowing smoke off in the distance or other interesting phenomena that lures the player to investigate. Like the smoke from a station that was recently raided by pirates, a downed freighter etc.

Self Destruct Button for Derelict Freighters, When you encounter a derelict freighter give the option to self destruct it at the end forcing the player to have to race back to the entrance through all the danger before the countdown expires. This would make the experience a lot more fun and an exciting way to end the encounter.

Acts of Piracy

I’m new to the game after being away for a long time. I’m really enjoying myself and taking it slow to really understand game mechanics and enjoy the journey. When shooting meteors in space for tritium, gold, etc. I keep accidentally shooting other ships passing by. This creates an “act of piracy” which lowers my standing (not sure what the implications of this are) and then calls sentinel ships in that shoot at me. Is there a way to avoid this or let the ship know I shot them by accident? It’s obnoxious and screwing with my chill exploration vibe.

New player really struggling, I want to love this game... but the combat is sapping the fun out of i...

This is not a rant, it’s more of an “I need advice because this…”.
I’m really enjoying exploring but every time I’m attacked by anything now, I just can’t be bothered, it’s not fun, I just stop the ship and immediately transfer everything out of the ship inventory into my suit so I don’t lose it and then wait for the inevitable.

It pains me to do this because I like games to be challenging, I don’t want things handed to me on a plate, I always set games to the hardest difficulty as I did with NMS except for perma death, but I’ve gradually had to reduce the combat difficulty setting and I’ve now got it set to one up from the easiest setting, yet I’m still being absolutely rinsed!
It’s bad enough that it feels like I must be doing something wrong or missing something obvious.

I’m not expecting to conquer the universe after just 12 hours of playing but so far I’m terrified to get into my ship and go anywhere near the clouds because every time I try to go anywhere, I immediately get scanned, of which there doesn’t seem to be any escape from as the scan only takes about 3 seconds. Then a bunch of ships instantly spawn on me that seem to be able to move and turn 10 times faster than I can, so I just end up spinning in circles with an alarm screaming “Shields are down, shields are down”.
And then as soon as my shields are dead I don’t have the materials to repair them, so I need to leave the planet to find the materials to repair the shields but I can’t even leave the atmosphere without being attacked.
I can’t outrun them, I can’t maneuver away from them, and my first encounter destroyed my shields so with no shield I can’t even take down 1 of them let alone 5, and the materials I need are apparently not on this planet.

I’m playing on PC but I use a controller as soon as I get in a ship, I discovered the auto-lock target system which definitely helps as the enemy ships seem to be able to move and turn 10 times faster than I can so I have no chance of doing it manually.
But I still seem to just end up spinning round in circles trying to catch them, and by the time I’ve managed to put a few shots on them, I’m already dead because I can’t repair my shields.

So I figure I must be doing something wrong or missing something.

  • Are you supposed to stay on the spawn planet for a long time? Do you eventually discover something, like an upgrade that helps you get off the planet?
There doesn’t seem to be any missions to do now, the game is telling me to go off planet and head to the stars but I can barely get out of the atmosphere.
  • Maybe I’m using the auto-targeting system wrong, are you supposed to basically sit still in the ship and let the target system do its thing or should you continue to boost and try to maneuver manually as well, am I fighting against it if I’m also trying to maneuver?
  • And in general, I know it might be difficult but without any major spoilers, any hints or clues to what might help me get through the beginning of the game so I can then progress on to learn and improve over time?

What types of missions would give me a Doctor Who roleplay feel?

I’m still pretty new to the game, just got my first freighter and settlement. I love exploring.

But the specific roleplay experience I’m looking for is to: Go somewhere, maybe random
Land my ship on a planet and generally not rely on it for inner atmosphere travel or saving my ass
Find someone who needs help or that something needs to be improved, which I’d be able to do without leaving the planet and not just pulling the fix from my inventory
Then I make my way back to my ship having “saved the day” and off to find someone else in need

Are there missions which fit this experience, either that the mission sends me there or that it’s something to do when I find a settlement which I’m not the leader of? If there’s these types of on-planet missions settlements give, I could warp into a system, search the closest settlement, land there, and do whatever local dangerous things they need.

Looking to get sandworm as a pet

Hi! Just like the title says, I am looking for a sandworm to tame. I am aware that having a pet sandworm was made possible through a quest, and I’m wondering if anyone has a spare sandworm egg they’d be willing to part with (if that is a thing since I have no idea if your pet sandworm can have gestation induced). I’d be happy to compensate you for it – I can offer valuable in-game items in exchange.
Thank you!
