I fell out of orbit

I was repairing a frigate and tried to use my jet pack to fly over top of it to short cut to the next broken module but I fell off and started falling back to the planet I was orbiting, I assumed I’d die to cosmic ray bombardment but my upgraded life support held out long enough that I made it through the atmosphere and managed to land on the surface!! It took about 2 minutes start to finish, and I’m sure people have done this before but I never have and my jaw hit the floor when I made it! I fucking love this game!! Have any of you done this?

No Man's Sky would benefit from an in-game civilization system

There are a number of player formed civilizations in NMS, but the game itself doesn’t have any kind of system for forming and joining civilizations. Given the current state of multiplayer, with most players having access to the same universe, now would be a good time to implement such a system. Not entirely a new concept, but some features might include:

  • The ability to form a civilization and recruit other players. Civ names can appear next to players’ gamertags/usernames that are members of a civilization.
  • A governance system where players can create ranks that have different privileges.
  • Players could create custom flags for their civs.
  • Claiming starsystems and planets as part of a civilization.
  • co-ownership and management of bases, settlements, and freighters.

Now a system like this would probably go hand in hand with a major settlement overhaul, as part of the same or separate update. Settlements could act as the hearts of civilizations as players work together to grow, maintain, and defend settlements across their civs. A settlement update might include:

  • More freedom over where a settlement is established, what players can build in a settlement, the layout of settlement specific buildings, and the number of settlements a player (or civ) can own.
  • Settlement requirements like food, water, hazard protection, life support, power, and housing.
  • Implementing the existing farming, mining, power, and cooking mechanics in the game.
  • The ability to establish trade routes via frigates between settlements and bases. Trade routes may need to be defended against pirates from time to time.
  • Settlement building that serve specific functions and can be damaged or destroyed during sentinel attacks.
  • Set up defenses against sentinel attacks.

What do you guys think? Is this an update you’d like to see at some point? Are there any other features you’d want implemented in a civilization update?

I have to blow the bloody doors off every day. Would you?

I have to blow the bloody doors off every day. Would you?

Last week, I found two nice hotspots and a power hotspot near a factory. This week I finally got round to putting in a base. I set up the generators and extractors first, then I needed to create something to shelter in while visiting this cold planet. I didn’t have time for anything complicated or fancy and sometimes you just want a simple base you can visit to collect the resources, but I also didn’t want to drop a prefab or crude shack. Then I realised that, because the dioxite resource was right beside the factory, I had another option…

Well, this is cosy

And this looks cool

I was happy with this solution; it saved time, is very cosy in there, and I liked the idea of a base with its own sentinel guard unit. It was only after placing the nomad dock and stepping back to admire the scene that I remembered something important; that door is going to regenerate. Most times I visited, I’d have to blast my way out and either have a fight or hide. Now, sometimes a ready-made sentinel fight would be just what I was looking for, but more often it wouldn’t (and the alarm noise is annoying).

Then I had another idea…

Adding a 6 next to the factory’s 5 was an unexpected bonus joke

Now I don’t have to go outside at all. if I just pop in for the resources, I just grab them and go. Now I have a sneaky base, guarded by sentinels, and nobody need know I’m there. Well, except for the dock and landing pad right outside.

There is a lake in front of the factory…

A lake with possibilities

It’s close enough and deep enough to hide the other end of a short-range teleport hop, a landing pad, a roamer dock and any other little thing I might want to add. It would be even more super secret and I’d still have the option of breaking out for a fight when I wanted to. The problem is “any other little thing I might want to add”; when I devote any kind of attention to a base, I often go a bit over the top. I’m showing some discipline for once – I really do have other things to be doing – but this is going to niggle at the back of my mind for some time. So I thought I’d ask: what would you do?
