I've played both No Man's Sky and Elite: Dangerous...

And I played them side by side for a VERY LONG time. For almost 5 years, I was a devout CMDR in Elite. I was active in the community, I wrote stories on inara.cz and I built dream ships in Coriolis. Then, out of the blue, Frontier Developments announced that they would no longer give support to console gamers and that no future DLC would be added except to PC. So after 5 years of paying them for every scrap of content to include paint jobs, ship kits, and decorative boubles for my cockpits; after spending $50 of my hard-earned money so many years ago to purchase a physical copy of the game, I was told to either buy a Steam Deck/PC, or kiss off because (supposedly) the FPS aspect that was added in the Odyssey expansion was too much for consoles to handle.

Meanwhile, here’s Hello Games not only constantly expanding the game by leaps and bounds (totally for free) and not only have they never stated that NMS is too much for consoles to handle, they’ve done the impossible and added the Switch to their list of platforms! And with every expansion or update, there’s always something that HG has in the background to try to improve stability for non-PC fan base. Proving without a doubt that the Elite dev team and their claims are full of sh*t.

Thank you Hello Games for actually CARING about the people who spent money on your product and fastly refusing to leave us blowing in the wind as you move forward. Thank you for doing all of this hard work for FREE (even though I have no idea through what sorcery you’re supporting yourself). And thank you for putting other developers to absolute shame by showing them how you’re supposed to treat people who invest both their time and their faith in your product. I’m proud that after I hung up my CMDRr’s hat, I was able to pick up the cloak of a traveler…

A Recovering Addict's Travels through No Man's Sky (Part 1)

Hello! Hopefully this post belongs here – I did my best to tag it properly, but if the mods feel that this kind of post doesn’t fit the nature of this sub, that’s cool too. This is “Part 1” of my journey of playing through No Man’s Sky. I am a recently recovering addict (lots of questionable life choices), and one of the things that helps make things easier for me is playing video games. I bounced around from game to game for a while, before a youtube video popped up on my feed, talking about No Man’s Sky. I purchased the game at launch, but, like many people, I was severely underwhelmed with the game. I had been following along with the development ever since, and have now and again thought about picking up the game again. I decided that this was the perfect excuse that I needed to finally do a full play-through of No Man’s Sky. So, here I am! My therapist suggested that I keep a journal while I work on recovery, and while I never could really find anything to write about my own life, I decided that I want to try and journal about my experiences playing No Man’s Sky! My goal is to play the game every day for the next while, and try to have different experiences each time, to help distract my brain during my recovery. Then, at the end of each play session, I’ll journal about what I did. I also figured, “why the hell not? Let’s put it on reddit!” in the hope that some make-believe internet peer pressure would help keep me honest.

To be clear: this is just me uploading my journals of my adventures in No Man’s Sky. My goal here is to try and talk about my adventures in the game in (hopefully) interesting ways. If for some reason anybody finds this to be any kind of interesting and decides to comment, tips and tricks and general advice is always appreciated! (But no story spoilers, please!) If you have any stories that you want to share about your own adventures in-game, I would love to hear them also! Disclaimer: I am not incredibly well-experienced with this game. I know a bit, and the game has been helpful, but I’m not super hip to all of the crazy efficient mining strats or the best way to trade goods or anything like that. (and again mods if this post doesn’t belong here you can just delete, I’ll keep journaling anyhow, maybe post them somewhere else. No biggie.)

Today actually starts off with a bit of a short entry. I really wanted to get my first session in tonight, but the game had to do some updating, and my internet isn’t the best. I finally started playing around 1am my time, and got in around a solid 40 minutes before I felt like it was time for bed. Hopefully, I will be able to get in a more complete experience tomorrow. FYI, this playthrough is occurring on normal mode, as I want to go for a more conventionally casual experience.

I started on a planet called Winthalc Omega, a dusty, irradiated world, where orange sand blows on the horizon and strange, tentacled lifeforms grow out of the surface, like the world is some sort of cancerous prison for an eldritch god. I promptly went to work trying to survive, gathering resources to repair my hazard protection and following a mysterious signal to my ship. As I sat in the ruined cockpit, I took some time to add my own personal touch to tho it. After a brief moment of thought, I renamed my ship the Akabane 3000, after one of my more favorite anime characters.

The next order of business was gathering some resources to repair my ship, and exploring the area. I found a crashed satellite nearby my ship, and when I interacted with it, it sent out a mysterious signal. Very nifty! I spent the rest of the session gathering resources. Crafted some sort of metal plate, so I’m halfway there to repairing my ship! (Sorta kinda.) I also took some time to take some screenshots! (See above.) Got some of the environment and the local flora and fauna – I think that the walking creatures look like mini-cuthulus, so maybe I’ll rename them something in that theme. I also found some cool blue crystals, which I thought looked really nice against the landscape. I also noticed that the sands turn more dark blue at night, which provided a cool contrast to the hot, radioactive sands of the daytime. I finished my day as the planet turned to night, sitting in my ship and staring out into the boundless sky. I finally decided on a name for the planet before logging off: “Az Kaban,” after the prison from the Harry Potter series, both due to my own personal headcanon about the planet’s creatures (see above), and because it was a place that I desperately wanted to get the hell off of. The screenshots I took are attached to this post, all taken pre-name change.

That’s all for today, folks! Stay tuned for my next adventure, I’m looking forward to getting off of this planet and starting to explore the solar system! Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, if you have. Honestly, I don’t really expect very many people to read this, but that’s fine. This was surprisingly more helpful to do than I thought that it would be, so I guess there’s my motivation to come back! Assuming this doesn’t get deleted, there will probably be another installment in the next day or so, we’ll see how it works out.

First Moments on the planet

A shot of the horizon

Ghot G’yotglorb, amirite? (Seriously tho what is this thing?)

Di-Hydrogen, I think? Pretty anyhow

The ground sprouts tentacles

Az Kaban at night. (Pre-name change)

Falling in love all over again...

For Reference: I pre-ordered No Man’s Sky when it was first announced specifically because they said it would support VR. I played it on the PS VR first generation and had a great time.

Flash Forward to today. I’ve had the PS VR2 for a couple of weeks, but no time to play it. This morning I fired up NMS and the VR2. If I didn’t need to stop to go to the bathroom I would still be there. I’m falling in love with VR and NMS all over again. The graphical upgrade, the haptics in the controllers and the headset, did I mention the graphics. The 3D audio with the Sony Headset is perfect, fits comfortably and sounds phenomenal.

All in All, I’m ecstatic! BRAVO!

Please let Light No Fire have VR support. I’m ready!

P.S. I love this so much, I posted it in the PSVR2 and Light No Fire subreddits as well.

Can I create a custom squadron from ships I would be scrapping otherwise?

So here’s what I was thinking. You can hire an NPC to your squadron from any space station for example, right? Now what happens if BEFORE hiring them I buy their ship by swapping it with one of my ships that I would be scrapping otherwise? Will I get THAT ship to join my squadron?

Obviously it depends on the pilot too how well they will do in a fight, but this way I could have a squadron made up of Living Ships or fully equipped Sentinel Interceptors, right? Or, in theory I can claim the Starborn Runner as many times as I want if I’ve finished the expedition, can I just keep selling a Starborn Runner by swapping with them AND hire said pilot equipped with the Starborn Runner now? Can I have a full squadron of them?

I’ll test this out soon with a sentinel that I’d scrap otherwise and get back to you, but if this works I think it is huge, so much potential to create an amazing fight squadron this way!

FREIGHTERS, my newest

I missed out on a lot of great stuff, not playing the first several Expeditions. Here in the NMS Reddits, I saw lots of talk about freighters. Naturally I got curious about them. I chose one, then learned that there are two basic classes of freighters. The very common System Freighters, and there are a bunch to choose from. Then, there are the Capital Freighters. Now comes in three flavors, Sentinel, Venator and Pirate Dreadnought. I have flown in all three, and now, in each of their variations. Though, until today, never even one ‘S’ Class.
I was doing the time pulsing my starship around trying my best to scare up just one Organic Frigate. I went to my Pirate freighters bridge, thought better of taking my Capital ship in first, and short teleported to the Hangar Bay, jumped into a new Sentinel starship, launched, then opened the Galaxy Map. I chose a nearby Pirate controlled system. And, jumped. Arrived smack in the middle of a big battle, with a Pirate Dreadnought attacking a big Venator Resurgent freighter. Aw, why not… I flew right to the rear of the Pirate, shot up all its warp engines, then eased up into the Shield Gen channels, blew all of those out, got the message to go get or destroy the Pirate ship….as usual, ya have to dock in its landing bay just to see what class it is and all that. I did, saw it was a C and that one lost out instantly. I flew out and shot it to bits. Then, just for giggles, I thought to check out that big ol Resurgent. I have two in other saved games, but alas, never an S Class. When I landed, I used F to check the deck for its info. What?! An S class??!! COOL! I exited, called in my Pirate Freighter, landed back in the Resurgent, ran up to the command deck (it’s forward!) (ha!) and I was gonna buy it outright. BUT the game has other ideas. It let me trade mine for this one. Oh gee, a B class loaded up at 193 millions for this S class at 23 millions? HECK YES IT’S A DEAL! Units. Nanites. Quicksilver. I gots them! I now also have a lovely S Class Resurgent level Venator type Freighter! FINALLY! I HAVE ONE! Yeah all it takes is just stumbling on one, lucky as THAT! LOL! Thanks for listening in folks, this was fun!

I finally GOT ONE! Yaaaay ME! :oD
