I just don’t care about this latest expedition…

Normally I like expeditions. They're interesting, force me to play in new and different ways, give me unique rewards, and sometimes adds tidbits of lore to the universe.

This expedition, however, is a huge slog. Being forced to search for specific kinds of animals and hope that I can find them within the worlds along the course isn't great. Going through things like farming, among many other objectives, are just so tedious and time-consuming that I just can't be bothered to care.

The rewards to this particular expedition aren't even all that good, either. A few robot parts, a few posters that I don't even use in the first place, and a floating robot head. Wow.

Until now, the only expedition I failed to complete was the second or third, with the Mass Effect ship, because it was very short and I just didn't have time within that period to get through it. This will be the first I fail to complete because it's just so boring.

Am I the only one?

Fixing a crappy C-class solar ship before scrapping: an analysis

Fixing a crappy C-class solar ship before scrapping: an analysis

My current way to earn units is scrapping crashed ships. (Hint: Gek pirate systems with water)

I usually just ignore crappy ships (value less than 10MM with scanner), but occasionally for one reason or another, I end up flying one back to the space station. So I was interested: is it worth it to repair cargo slots before scrapping?

I ran the numbers.

Summary: Scrap value before cargo slot repair: 1.305MM After repair: 4.9MM Increase of: 3.595MM

Space station cost of all repair components: 1,209,355 units (not including things I cannot buy, i.e. activated copper, oxygen, condensed carbon to make antimatter)

The numbers look much better if you have farms for the annoying to buy or expensive things. I have an activated indium farm for the sole purpose of getting chromatic metal, for instance.

So technically, it’s probably worth it to fix even the crappiest of ships before scrapping, assuming you have easy access to the parts you need. IMO, not worth the time if you can move on to something that has a larger return on your investment of time.

Assuming it formats reasonably, here’s a table of everything I bought and a typical space station price (for me, yours may vary depending on difficulty settings)

A little quirk I discovered that might help alleviate some of the tedium when searching for your ult...

I’ve spent the last couple days looking for just the right staff for my character. I’ve found a number of S classes, but I want a specific color (in S class). So the game wants you to use the Polyphonic Core to detect the hidden autophage camps, then use the Scan Harmonizer to reveal them. But you quickly realize that there are only a handful of points of interest where these camps spawn, and I find it tedious to scan with the Polyphonic Core and constantly recharge it. So knowing the POIs I’m looking for, I don’t even bother installing the Polyphonic Core anymore. I just find a planet that has a high density of structures and fly low in a north or south direction and look for the ones that will spawn camps.

So here’s where this quirk comes in: You land at a POI and it turns out you don’t have to scan with your MT scanner (the C key on PC). When you’re outside your ship, if you interact with anything that triggers a scan, it will reveal the autophage camps. So you can use a map, the signal booster, a waypoint beacon, and I suspect dropping a base computer and claiming a base would work as well (I haven’t tested it because that method would be a bit silly).

So what use is this information? It’s not earth shaking, but my MT scanner recharges quite slow, so I found I was frequently in a situation where I found another POI that would spawn a camp, but my scanner wasn’t recharged yet. Now, instead of waiting, I just use one of the methods noted above. I’ve taken to using the signal booster at all drop pod locations (it actually detects the drop pod you’re at), and trigger the waypoint beacons when I find them (if you leave the marker for the minor settlement up, the subsequent beacons don’t go through that camera animation).

So about the only place I use the MT scanner is at the debris fields or at crashed freighters (of course, you can use the signal booster there as well, but the MT scanner doesn’t go through the camera pull-up animation, so it’s faster).

So yeah, nothing life changing, but if you’re searching for that perfect color combo, SC slot layout, or just an S class staff, I’ve found it helps alleviate a bit of the tedium when searching for those staff synthesis terminals.

Is it just me, or do pirate dreadnoughts not drop cargo bulkheads/S-class upgrades anymore?

The new Omega updated added the ability to claim pirate freighters, which is amazing, but I’ve also noticed that the “claim bounty” mechanic is completely broken.

Let’s say a pirate freighter surrenders to you. You get something like 400 nanites from the local system, some platinum, and +4 reputation by default.

If I board the dreadnought and claim the bounty, and they’ll always give you 6,767,000 units for doing so.

If I destroy the freighter, it just explodes and I get nothing.

If I destroy the pirate freighter and talk to the captain of the freighter I just saved, there’s no “claim bounty” dialogue, just them asking if you want to purchase the ship.

If the dreadnought surrenders, and talk to the captain of the other freighter, the same thing happens. No “claim bounty” dialogue, they just ask if you want to purchase the ship as if they spawned randomly in the system.

Has anyone else noticed this? Pirate Dreadnoughts used to be a great source of cargo bulkhead upgrades, but now it feels nerfed. It would take me months to scavenge from freighter wrecks what I built up in a few days pre-Omega. What gives?
