NMS HOT POST 2023/10/19

50 hours in. Maybe too early for thoughts, but Thoughts!

Some people appreciate these posts, others don't. Remove if necessary.

I remember when NMS came out and I heard about how the game was disappointing and people accused the devs of so much stuff. I didn't know much about the game at the time so I don't know the details, I just know that many considered it a flop. I remember later on looking at it in Steam and saw it was something like Overwhelmingly Negative or Very Negative, which was surprising because at the time I NEVER saw a game with that low a rating.

Much later on, this game just kept popping up on my feed and stuff. I remember going to see the reviews and saw one user praising the game because of how the devs pulled this game out of the hole it was in, and a short while later I added it to my wishlist. It just kept popping up and up, and years went by. One day, two weeks ago, I was just out of games, and I was entering a point in my life where I was moving from Action/Adventure/RPG games into more relaxing crafting games (which I never considered earlier in life. I loved Subnautica and Planet Crafter, Frost Punk.

Well, guess what? The game popped up again, and I saw the rating had risen to Mostly Positive. This was no mere feat. So I decided to get it. I love it!

I always loved structure and a clear mission in games, but for the first time I found myself just leaving the main mission aside and just discovering stuff and upgrading my equipment. It was really fun and really beautiful! I took a 4 day break and made a new save (I still haven't reached my furthest milestone, communicating with Null for the first time).

I love the multitools the technlogies and so much stuff! I love upgrading the starship. But, of course, there are caveats.

-When I first played, the story progression seemed uneven and incoherent. It's clearer now the second time, but I still think it can be worked on.

-A lot of stuff isn't well-explained (and so don't make sense). Beacons, charts, signals, waypoints etc. I remember someone saying this is due to the game going through so many updates, which is a reasonable explanation. I'm OK with this.

-A big negative for me is -sadly- the planets. I have to be fair, it isn't easy procedurally generating a ridiculous amount of planets and making them all unique, and the undertaking is one so grand flaws are bound to pop up, but it can't be brushed under the rug.

I love how they look from space, they're so beautiful and awe-inspiring and unique. But when you land on them, they feel far less unique. This last run I found two very unique planets, a "foaming" planet with so many bubbles in the atmosphere, and a volcanic moon which was awesome since it's the first one I found, and it looks like Mordor from Lord of the Rings. But many of them aren't very interesting in terms of terrain, they seem to be the same kind of "rocky". And I think that dampens things.

One of the problems is how planets seem to painted over with this single color. Sure, a planet may be green, but it doesn't look as interesting when it's almost entirely greenish. Or entirely reddish. A bit of contrast and variety go a long way. This is probably why I find snowy planets and water planets way more interesting, there's more contrast going on, and I wish this applied to way more planets.

Animals. This goes along with the previous point. I remember getting a pet for the first time and loved it! (apparently this is a relatively new update?) I never get pets in games and don't care about it, but something about it is really appealing in this game. I love the cute animals, especially the crab-like ones!

But to be honest, aside from the very few, most animals are just ugly to look at. Like I look at the image in my discovery tab and I think "if this thing was real I might kill it." that's how ugly most creatures are to me. A lot of them have this small head on a big body that looks weird, and the way so many of them don't have snouts or noses make them look a bit too "human" and it's real creepy. Maybe I'm alone in this, but it's just what I thought.

Also, for some reason, animals have very little variety when it comes to colors. They're almost always this dull greenish shade of grey. Why? I have no idea. I'm hoping this changes.

-Planets are great to find and catalogue, and finding all animals is a fun way to get more nanites. But I find that once I land on a planet, I'm rarely motivated into exploring it. The first few are fine, and finding some materials is important, but in regards to the structures it feels very copy-pastey. I don't know how this would be tackled, maybe more uniqe NPCs? More unique planets with certain structures? I actually read planets have different biomes (which I didn't know), I only know there are caves and there's underwater. It's fun finding something new such as an underwater ruin, and I'm glad I played this game blind and avoided watching anything, makes every little thing a nice surprise. But most of the time, I explore a small patch of that planet.

-One thing I forgot to mention in regards to First Contact planets. These are more plentiful than I initially thought, since on my first run I started in an already discovered system, and the second system I visited was also discovered with the exception of a far away planet (tucked behind another planet, which is why it wasn't discovered I guess). I just think it's kind of odd to be making first contact an then finding some outpost with two merchants on it.

If what I read is true, and that the amount of planets is gargantuan in this game (which I don't undrstand how it works), I honestly would have preferred to have far fewer planets while making them more unique.

-I've had 3 starships before. Bummer that I can't customize them, which I assumed I could. I would've loved a system like Borderland's with guns, different parts have different properties. Oh well.

-Just curious; I heard I get a freighter! Is this something I get with the storyline? Or do I have to go out of my way to get it? If it's the first I'll gladly wait for the surprise.

So yeah, I love this game! I actually look forward to playing more! It's a lot of fun, and seeing how there are so many crazy updates I'm looking forward to even more updates and playing my first expedition! (I just hope they don't drop this game now that I'm playing it).

Thank you for reading.

RP Game modes

Not a suggestion or anything, more of an idea since this is one of those games where you make your own fun (I have also seen people do this on Youtube etc.), so I’ve been playing around with two saves and figured I’d share and throw in my two cents. So whoever might fancy trying this out, have fun.

Currently I have two, both are Permadeath. For me both are really fun, they can get intense at times and it’s been a wild ride for me so far.

Outlaw
Now,… both JasonPlays and SurvivalBob on Youtube did this (plus some others, think they called it a Fugitive run), but I kinda did my own rules, since the concept they played didn’t really feel outlaw-ish to me (felt more like you’re a wanted secret agent). So I made some changes:

– permadeath game mode, all difficulty maxed out, pvp and network is on
– radiant pillar is a no go, ship crashed and is beyond repair, also you are covering your tracks, for now everyone thinks you’re dead
– only outlaw stations are allowed
– preferred planets for landing are barren/abandoned ones, dissonant ones and ones with aggressive sentinels (this is to kind of simulate you’re a wanted man, space police will shoot you on sight, there is a warrant out for your expiration), however if the mission takes you to some other planet, it’s fine (for example the outlaw missions from the outlaw space stations)
– you can’t build a permanent base in a non-outlaw system, if you make one, you need to destroy it before leaving the system, remember you’re burning evidence you were ever there in the first place, unless this is a starting planet (this is where your radiant pillar was last known to be, so it is kind of expected some other trace of you will be found)
– trade posts are allowed, but only once per system (once you make a transaction the red eye is on you)
– there is no direct goal, like reach the center of the galaxy but if you need a closure, this is just fine and dandy
– no freighters

Exploration Expedition
This one really has a sense of taking a road trip in a mini-van for me. It is simple, I probably won’t make it since the goal is pretty big, but it’s about the trip not the destination. Also, this one doesn’t have a specific start, in fact you might need some things in order for this one to work.

– permadeath game mode, all difficulty maxed out, pvp and network is on
– you need all portal glyphs for this one
– only one ship is allowed, this is your mini-van for me it was a small shuttle, hence the metaphor
– you can salvage ships and sell them, but that is it, scrap them for parts or earn some cash, but the idea is you only own one single ship (this actually turned much more fun that I expected it to be, you have to plan and prepare for jumps between galaxies, decide what tech you’re going to dismantle and put into cargo, what resources you might need at the other end and so on)

– the rules for reaching a center: you start with all single glyph, this gets you to some 5000ly from the center, you travel their with warp, (remember they glyphs of the last planet before jump though) each time you reach a new galaxy, after you get your ship up and running again you must use the portal coordinates of the last planet from the previous galaxy, and the rest is manual warp until you reach the center again. Sometimes this gets you to the center, sometimes a bit further away.

The goal is to go through 255 galaxies and get back to Euclid, meet strange shit along the way, maybe document it. Think of it like your own Franklin expedition or something, that was the idea behind it.

I'm not the only one with a dinky first ship, a dream, and a serious case of being overwhelmed..

And loving it?

I mean, I don’t have the simplest clue what I’m doing. I’m trying to learn the alien language right now, and accidentally offending them enough that, I’m now supposedly an enemy.. but they still talk (try to, at least) with me. Lol.

Trying to follow the tutorial quests.. but I’m stuck on digging up the buried tech, nome of the chests I’m finding have it in them.. but oh well, I found this little drone to rebuild, gathered the components, and now I need some kind of material I haven’t even heard of. What the heck lol.

I can see myself sinking a lot more time than I should into this — it’s scratching an itch I’ve been looking for, for a long time.

Is there much of a social scene here? I haven’t even figured the multi-player out yet, but I’d certainly be keen for it.. anyone want to team up at some stage, or in other words, baby-sit me? Lol.

Is there any reason to make a ship with more than 800 ly hyperdrive range?

I spent a little time, built my first S-class explorer, set it up for max. hyperdrive range ending up at 1400 ly with upgrades… but the map doesn’t want to let me warp more than four jumps at a time, and one jump is typically 200 ly.

Have I overdone it? Would it make sense to just re-collect the parts (they’re nothing special, just arclight wings) and get something with the other stats a little higher?

Underground Base Build

Underground Base Build

Piscu-Duca Outpost, Euclid

Been wanting to post this base for eons. It’s my virtual pride and joy. Probably 5 years old so far (I seriously wish there was a way we could see how much time has been invested in a base). I don’t play nearly as often as I used to but random inspiration will strike out of the blue and I’ll lose 3 hours to adding new sections, areas, etc. I can’t imagine ever being finished. Oh! This base predates the new base parts. It was probably half the size when the parts were updated and if you look hard enough, I’m sure you could find a few of the old wooden pieces somewhere. As hard as I worked, I’m sure I missed a swap somewhere.

At my base you’ll find:

  • 8500+ part build
  • No glitch, though a fair amount of overlap
  • Over 60% underground and in preexisting caves
  • Base staff apartments (Scientist, Exocraft tech, and Weapons tech spaces are finished. Overseer’s spot isn’t. The botanist lives on my freighter, though he does have a carbon lab on base)
  • Hidden apartment accesses
  • “Secret” trophy room
  • Above ground Conservatory, access via underground pathing though
  • Underground farming
  • Underground Exocraft garage
  • 2 underground condos
  • Chill planet, though toxic, very green\grey, and otherwise pretty drab. Used to have ancient bones but the reset a few years ago took away that perk.
  • Nearly all wooden construction
  • Solar farm
  • And more…

Do pay me a visit and let me know what you think. I’m sure there’s another 8000 base parts worth of ideas left to be pulled out of this place.
