NMS HOT POST 2023/10/30

It Finally Clicks

Some games require a learning curve, maybe even all games. But this one took the cake for me. 2nd Place was Bloodborne, which to a souls newb (way back in 2015) was a bit of a struggle at first. I loved the combat, graphics, sound design, world atmosphere, but I got my ass handed to me. And after 10 hours of determination it finally clicked. And then I grinded on and beat the game after about 30 more hours of play.

The same thing happened to me with NMS 8 years later. I'm a late adopter, and admittedly not a pro-gamer. So I thought, everyone is saying this game kicks ass in 2023 and I gave it a try. When I booted up the game I could tell immediately people were on to something. But it didn't quite CLICK yet. I spent 11 damn hours on my first NORMAL playthrough. Started a CREATIVE playthrough and did 4 hours of that. Tried RELAX and SURVIVAL but didn't like either of them after only a short time.

I put in about 15 hours total between about a half dozen unsuccessful playthroughs, and then I went back to CUSTOM and I did some serious picking and choosing between gameplay elements. Basically I made travel, currencies, resource gathering, technology research a breeze while making survival elements and combat ultra hard. It is the perfect balance of challenge and gameplay feel (progression) for me. And that's the irony of it all.

I was told from the beginning to "play how you want to", but because I'm a person that learns best from repeated demonstration, it really did take a long while of learning the mechanics for it to all sink in. It was really frustrating at times because I thought this was not the game I believed it was. But it really IS. The CUSTOM playthrough with these adjusted settings lasted 5 hours which put me up to a total of 20 hours played.

This is the save file I'll keep going on and there is no need for the others. It finally clicks. Looking forward to completing the story and seeing the rest of this game has to offer. I really think Hello Games should be commended for not only fixing this game, making it everything it should have been on launch and much more. What a breath of fresh air in the age of paywalled content and microtransactions.

NMS is like a warm mug of coffee on a Winter's morning

I guess you could say I’m an OG NMS player. I had preordered the game, as it was one of my most hyped games back in the day. Like most people who played on release, I was a bit confused and underwhelmed upon first booting up the game; it was nothing like the pre-release footage (I know, old news at this point). Even still, I clocked in around 50 hours, as I was able to find some enjoyment in its simplicity, and could see potential in it (and perhaps I hoped to discover more depth hidden somewhere).

After those initial 50 hours, I uninstalled and didn’t touch it again until the Pathfinder update. I messed around a little, liking the improvements, but ultimately moved on again after about 10 hours. It wasn’t until the Next update that I tried again, and this is where I really started to see some of that initial potential shining through.

All of this is to say, I am just now coming back to the game all these years later. It is absolutely astonishing how much this game has evolved. I started a new save, wanting to experience the game how we all wish it had launched, and I’m loving it. HG have added SO MUCH to this game, it’s honestly a bit overwhelming. Playing NMS today vs the launch version is one hell of a trip, let me tell you. The ability to make bases ANYWHERE you want, and the massive amount of base customization now compared to Foundation…the new planet types…the fact there are now actual deep oceans, and you can even build underwater…the improved cave systems…the look & feel of space, and the improved combat depth…the vehicles and mechs…the improved land combat and sentinels…the new fauna types…the expanded crafting…there is just SO. MUCH.

I honestly don’t even know the point of this post, other than to say this game always has had a special place in my heart, and playing it in its current form is one hell of a ride. This is one of those games I’ll probably never uninstall again. I can’t even put a finger on why I love this game so much…there’s just something…special about it. It gives me a inexplicable feeling when I play it. It’s like a warm mug of coffee on a Winter’s morning.

Thanks, Hello Games. You did right by us players. I can’t wait to see where you take NMS next.

Anyway, sorry for the long-winded post, and thanks for reading!

Building items....

So I know there is the base building items you obtain in the anomaly and the ones through the quicksilver shop but I just found out about the items in pirate stations you can buy for tainted metal..i knew there were items to buy but not base building items… my question is.. are there any off the beaten path vendors or stations or trade terminals that have rare base parts? I’d like to collect everything I can for my building 👷‍♂️. Thanks traveler’s!
