Tips for the expedition (minor spoilers)

Heres a few tips for the expedition and some other general info

  • take things into the expedition you can sell for about 3500-4000 nanites as it costs around that replicate your ship and multitool -take a good amount of the following: Ox, chrom metal, copper, cadmium, life gel, ion batts, warp core/hypercore, ferrite dust -a person refiner mk2 will be your friend in this expedition. I also reccomend taking hazard protection and jet pack modules for any other tech -the expedition can be completed sub 6 hours however aspects are locked behind community progress. Dont end the expedition till those are all complete as theres tons of quicksilver in the optional milestones. You can in the meantime go back to your main save and claim the other rewards without ending the expedition
  • as with other expeditions opportunities will arise to complete objectives from later phases at random points. Dont worry about doing everything linear and just hit the targets as they come up
  • take a ship thats got good hyperdrive efficiency and range. This expedition involves a reasonable amount of warping around. The ship you can clone in the expedition is whichever active ship you have in your main save at the time
  • one of the objectives takes you through a black hole. You can use the station teleport to get back to the previous system, this is important as the black hole will take you far away from the expedition rendezvous path
  • the space station teleport will show the stations for rendezvous planets. This is important as youll want to return to these to help with the community goals
  • remember to google or look on the wiki for recipes to make things. Some of the objectives can be halved for time required by harvesting minerals and making the plants with oxygen and minerals in a refiner instead of

On a seperate note the dual portable refiner glitch is still working on switch as of the current version. You can no longer place tech in there but you can still dupe materials and things like salvaged data and salvaged freighter modules

Trick for pirate freighter battles

I dont know if y’all know this but I have seen some people asking about how to save both ships in the pirate freighter battles. This is what I do, when you spawn in go directly to the engines on the pirate freighter and shoot them out. This will stop the freighter from escaping. Then all you gotta do is destroy sheilds then fuel cells. This causes enough damage to make the ship surrender and it should give you an option to go to both of them.

First Permadeath-death experience

I went in knowing this could be bad.

Welp. It happened. I’m guessing I put in at least 30 hours. I progress really slow, cause I like to farm and grind a lot, my exosuit was still kinda weak with technology. It was touch and go for the first few hours, figuring out how to survive. After getting some batteries and life support cells, I was past the surviving part and moving on to getting the good stuff. I scored on a hot rod star ship and was mostly about getting it maxed out.

I was sure I could brave any extreme planet, I was doing fairly well with keeping a good stock to keep my tech charged. I just left an extreme planet with 606 F super heated storms to get some good resources and made a sweet new animal companion there that was following me around for a couple hours.

So I got what I needed, went to a new system to buy new tech, scanned planets and found a new extreme planet to land on with an extreme storm already happening and thundering. I seized the moment to start getting storm crystals, despite barely being able to see with the storm, but I can see the flashing storm crystals. Then I guess a third storm was announced on top of the two already happening, as soon as I started grabbing storm crystals, which I didn’t think three storms was possible.

It was a wind storm with barely time to react, even if I were to dig a tunnel, I was immediately swept up. I was already a couple hundred meters away from my ship when I got picked up. I knew I was in trouble, frantically trying to use my jet pack as I’m being tossed around trying to avoid hitting the ground. Trying to get out was not happening either. I have been in wind storms before and I purposely jumped in and had fun with it, but this wind, even I tried to run, was not letting me go. Losing sight of my ship, I panicked, fumbling controls; I kept myself from hitting the ground a couple times. I was trapped by a hillside and before long, slammed me on the side of it, I heard “shield down” and the screen faded to black. I took a couple minutes to process what just happened.

Maybe I can take it as a learning experience. Though when you’re in permadeath, anything can blindside you at a moments notice. I’m guessing the lack of exosuit upgrades and underestimating damage taken in permadeath was my fatal mistake. I nearly ended my game when I got overzealous with the jet pack and miscalculated a drop just over a hill. It wasn’t a long drop, but I was down to a sliver of life.

I don’t know if a maxed out exosuit will tank a long fall, or save you from being slammed from a wind storm.

Now that I got that off my chest, I feel a bit better. I guess when you get knocked off, you get back on that horse. Maybe a bit more weary about acting reckless, in permadeath anyways.

I think the next approach, I’ll focus more on maxing out health and damage protection and less finicky about flashy starships. Being more cautious about extreme planets as well. I learned you can be taken by surprise and most threats on other modes are not a joke when playing in this mode. Better luck next time I guess.

New Ship Perk Suggestions

Long ago, NMS only allowed players to own a single ship, making it a major decision on which ship type a traveler should go after. However, realizing this felt clunky, updates have been made over the years, ship slots increased, new tech modules, and new features added. This was a great call, but it did leave one mark: the distinctions between each ship didn’t matter anymore; Haulers don’t even have the benefit of additional cargo space, since all S-class ships can have the same total number of slots.

I was talking ship perks with someone, and it got me thinking that perhaps it would make sense to introduce new strengths to less used ship types. As I was mulling it over, I realized that some of these changes would have to be pretty potent to stand up to current-day standards — poor Shuttles, their only real signature is that their takeoff price is reduced, made obsolete by the auto-recharge modules. So I decided to spitball a few ideas trying to stay true to the ship’s purpose while taking 2024 NMS in mind, and see if the following suggestions are strong enough to make you think “oh yeah, I’d definitely want to own a [ship type].”

Shuttles:

  1. 25% faster flight speed than others while in-atmosphere.
  2. 100% faster Pulse Drive speed.
  3. Takeoffs and landings are quicker and snappier.

Haulers:

  1. Cargo slots are double-sized, just like Freighters and storage containers.
  2. One storage augmentation slot unlocks two slots when used to unlock cargo slots.
  3. When the Teleport Receiver is installed, Hauler item teleport range is unlimited within the same star system.

Living:

  1. Increased chance of finding Space Encounters while pulsing. Alien Traders completely removed from encounter pool (Frequency 12 > 0). Odds of Rogue Black Hole and Relic Gate events tripled (Frequency 1 > 3).
  2. Eating food while in a ship refuels the ship’s hyper drive, pulse drive, launch thrusters, and damaged shields.

Explorer:

  1. Scanning one planet scans every planet in the system.
  2. Hyperdrive chain jumps. When setting a waypoint on the galactic map, can directly jump to that waypoint as long as the Explorer would have enough fuel to reach there, or up to 5 jumps (aka 5x listed hyperdrive range).

Let me know if these are along the right lines, and whether you’d fly one of these if they had these perks.

Just a Quick Appreciation

While I struggle with anxiety so it is difficult for me to egg myself into the multiplayer scene in the game, I just have to applaud ALL of you guys. This is the most non-toxic gaming community I think I’ve ever seen and I have been a gamer for a goood…
