[GUIDE] A handy guide of useful information and tricks for new players

These are some of the things I’ve discovered while playing, as well as information I’ve gathered from browsing and lurking this sub, among other places. Hopefully they’ll be useful to others.

General

  • To cover more ground faster, do a forward melee attack before jumping: it’ll keep your momentum as long as you keep moving forward.
  • Your own plasma grenade CAN one shot kill you.
  • Extreme weather goes away after a number of real-time minutes. If you pause the game and come back after ~5 minutes, the storm will clear;
  • Your hazard protection won’t drop while you are in Build Mode -> Free Camera. Sentinels can still see and hurt you.
  • Whenever the game counts you as “inside a building” (no longer losing life support, restoring hazard protection), sentinels drones will completely stop attacking you and lose sight of you. Bigger sentinels, such as Quads, might still attack.
  • If you are within your base, you can build several “open rooms” of 4 archways + one roof (or floor as roof) which can act as a shelter from sentinels and weather and still have ample line of sight for everything around you.
  • Atlas Cylinders (the red ones often found around settlements) often have Antimatter and Antimatter housing.
  • The rooms that an Atlas V3 pass opens inside space stations often has just a bunch of plants for carbon and some ammo boxes. Not worth the effort
  • Keeping a stack of Uranium is usually better than carrying Starship Launch Fuel around
  • Activated version of star metals (Copper, Cadmium, Emeril and Indium) are never used for any recipes. They’re only useful for selling or refining into Chromatic Metal.
  • A ship’s Economy Scanner can also be used to look for planetary Trading Posts.
  • If you sell stuff to pilots that arrive in Space Stations, it won’t affect the star system’s prices. This is very useful for Hardcore and Permadeath modes, where you’re more likely to take Active Indium all over your exosuit, ship and freighter.
  • These pilots that stop by Space Stations can offer any of the specific weather elements (Pyrite, Phosphorus, Dioxite, Parafinum), Pugneum, Chromatic Metal, as well as Alloy Metals (dirty bronze, magno-gold, etc). How much they have depends on the system’s economy level.
  • Although selling to these pilots won’t affect the prices of the star system, their inventories are affected by the prices shown at the Space Station. You can, for instance, crash Metal Plate prices down to -80% at the trade terminal and buy full stocks off the pilots for the same -80% discount
  • On that note, waiting around a 3-star economy space station is the fastest way to fill up your inventory with Metal Plates, if you ever need more for your mining farms.
  • Pilots that land on planets often have one or two of the 6 plants used for crafting super expensive things.
  • Do NOT attempt to crash the prices of Wiring Looms, Microprocessors or pretty much anything else that’s expensive and ready to buy out of a Space Station’s trade terminal. Wiring Looms’ base prices are 50k/25k buy/sell. For Microprocessors, it’s 19k/2k. Launch Fuel is 40k/450
  • Markets are usually fully restocked after 2 hours of real time.
  • Crashed markets take over 24 real time hours to recover.
  • You can transform Units into Nanites via Outlaw Space Stations. The illegal goods sellers there always have a number of Suspicious Packets (Technology) and (Weaponry). While it’s not a 100% chance they’ll drop X mods, the chance is very high.
  • These Outlaw sellers often stock Larval Eggs and Hadal Cores, which you can refine into 50 nanites each. Having a number of these outlaw stations ready to visit can be very good for your nanite account.

Mission stacking

  • If you are too far away from where a mission is supposed to happen, you can reset it and it’ll most likely point to a planet within your current star system. This is best done in systems with 2 planets.
  • The Scan (Minerals/Fauna/Flora) and Take a Photo of X missions can stack. If you reset them while in a small system, you’re more likely to get all of them for a single planet.
  • All the “Kill” missions (sentinels, fauna, monstrosities, pirates), as well as the “feed animals” missions can stack and will count for completion simultaneously, no matter which system or planet you kill/feed the things. If you have 3 “Kill 1 predator” missions active at the same time, as soon as you kill 1, all 3 will complete.

Money money money

  • Starting out fresh, mining for Cobalt might be the first bit of easy money you can get. Find a cave and mine away. Once you can build your first Medium Refiner, you just need to buy Oxygen and put both on the refiner.
  • Oxygen is a “universal multiplicator”. Stick it + any of the following elements in a refiner to get more of said element: Condensed Carbon, Ionized Cobalt, Chlorine.
  • If you have access to plenty of Trituim and Dihydrogen, you can use them to craft Frigate Fuel. The return of investment is usually around 100x, as both elements are extremely cheap and 50tonnes has a base sale price of 20k
  • Planetary trading posts might have Drop Pod Coordinate Data for sale. You’ll notice that these are always sold at ~33% discount. You can immediately sell them at any space station for a hefty profit. With enough inventory space and Teleport-saved trading posts, you can even crash the drop pod markets of several systems before selling it all to a space station. Combine this with the time it takes for economies to recover and you can spend a good day hopping back and forth for immense profits.
  • A Cactus plantation on a desert planet is one of the easiest, lowest maintenance and time consuming ways to get lots of money. Each cactus yields 150-180 Cactus Flesh. With 200, you can craft one Unstable Gel, which has a base selling price of 50k. This makes each planted cactus worth roughly 35-40k
  • You can always visit other players’ activated indium or whatever else farms. If they’ve uploaded their base, they want other players to drop by and get the stuff, because they no longer need it themselves. They want to help you and others.
  • Mining machines work on a diminishing returns math. The overall yield drops among all miners the more you put around the spot.
  • Minor Settlements NPC sellers usually have 1 or more advanced materials that you have to otherwise craft yourself, such as Semiconductors or Nitrogen Salts.

Making upgrades better

  • If you put similar upgrades next to each other, they gain a small bonus (10%) to their efficacy. A +5% damage for your Infra-Knife besides another said upgrade will make both give you +5.5%, for a total of +11% damage.
  • You can only have 3 nanite bought upgrades of the same thing (shield, specific weapon) per tab. You can, for instance, install 3 shield upgrades on your General exosuit tab, plus another 3 on the Technology tab.
  • Crafted upgrades do not count for the above maximum. They still count for giving the proximity bonus.
  • Any upgrades that are in the General tab of your ship can be damaged by Black Hole jumping. Any upgrades in the Tech tab of your ship and exosuit are always safe from being damaged.

COMPOSTELLAR - planetary travel guide

https://preview.redd.it/g4p8jvygug191.png?width=562&format=png&auto=webp&s=89f0cba392b10b730dad2876983ddbaf51b5d5be

Compostellar is a red tropical planet located in The Wandering Star system, in Euclid, a yellow star gek system with 5 planets and 1 moon.

It has regular cycles with green skies during the day and black skies at night. The climate is misty warm, although pleasant, and the temperature is usually around 77 ºF. However, during heat storms it can reach 419 ºF.

The resources that can be found in Compostellar are: star bulb, sodium, paraffin and copper, mainly.

It is a planet with abundant flora and scarce fauna. The soil is covered by a dense red grass, although in some areas the grass acquires a more pinkish tone.

https://preview.redd.it/cl8vsou8mg191.png?width=684&format=png&auto=webp&s=1d41755d2f2ca4e2046b12e6d3efa12da6d19024

It lacks oceans, seas, lakes or rivers, since it has no water on its surface or in the depths of its caverns. The terrain is varied, with mountainous areas and flatter regions formed by plains, as well as some hills. The forests are made up of three species of trees, described below.

https://preview.redd.it/7pqfbegz1h191.png?width=1470&format=png&auto=webp&s=0cc33c8b81986bfe82fecb0ab7b85629e1d95f12

The sharpleaf is a tree with a narrow trunk at its base that widens, forming a bulb at its upper end, inside which large quantities of condensed water are stored. From the trunk emerge branches crowned by leaves in the shape of an ogive, whose edges are so sharp that can easily cut the flesh, which give it its name. These trees do not usually grow much more than 3-4 meters.

https://preview.redd.it/jlm5j0t12h191.png?width=1508&format=png&auto=webp&s=86af22f63173010af6d5c8d303d22eb3cd41fbb7

The shadowtree is a generally taller tree, in whose trunk different species of fungi tend to proliferate due to the nutrients in its bark and the water accumulation system it has to survive on a planet without liquid water on its surface.

The leaves of this tree are wide and cast large shadows around it, hence its name.

https://preview.redd.it/coq983w92h191.png?width=1938&format=png&auto=webp&s=cc04fa449aa819c21ce504d5b529e1227797c2d6

But above the rest stands the longneck. This species, which can reach 10-15 meters in height, has a long trunk that protrudes from the forest, ending in a dense fringe of tropical leaves. Some of the planet’s flying species use the tops of longnecks to create their nests, because they provide good cover against hot storms.

https://preview.redd.it/q2txrnbh2h191.png?width=1800&format=png&auto=webp&s=7ce1d15af95493d001e3c68f1eb44477e33b9a3e

Less common is the whipler palmtree species. Its trunks are formed by several branches that emerge from the ground. It usually grows forming Y-shaped trees, with two main branches crowned by leaves very similar to those of the longneck, but in this case curling upwards.

On the other hand, the understory is composed of the aforementioned red grass and two subspecies of shrubs, known as roundplants. The first is the blood roundplant, so called because of its dark color. The second is the light roundplant. These shrubs can be found all over the planet, covering the forest floor.

https://preview.redd.it/sm81a2dp0h191.png?width=1578&format=png&auto=webp&s=4610d2b56751edeb66f87a25d608672a8705f758

The catalog of the surface flora is crowned by the dangerous flora, abundant in Compostellar. There are all kinds, described below.

https://preview.redd.it/zgqwgoj01h191.png?width=2296&format=png&auto=webp&s=81ef7ddddc8316510adfb262c8c1b6c8253cf094

The floorwhip will stretch at the slightest movement, lashing out and expelling a kind of acid capable of damaging an exosuit’s protective systems.

Toxspitters, common throughout the galaxy, will swell on approach and expel a highly toxic and noxious gas.

The bloodmaw have in their center a flower that is a source of oxygen, but you have to be careful, because if someone tries to approach the two large leaves on the sides will close as if it were a terrible mouth, and can seriously injure.

The cave flora consists mainly of bulbous flowers and a single type of dangerous flora, similar to the toxspitter, but in miniature. This dangerous flora is in the form of several blisters stuck to the ground, which when approached will swell and expel a gas that is also toxic and noxious. It is especially important to be cautious with these, as caves are enclosed places where a large accumulation of toxic gas can be fatal.

As for the fauna, to date no terrestrial species have been recorded on the planet, so there are only three flying species inhabiting Compostellar.

https://preview.redd.it/b9i7s6kk1h191.png?width=2682&format=png&auto=webp&s=02ed29f897bd659e911714ec0f354d74985f9e44

The floorpiker, named after the Wanderer’s first encounter with this species, is a species of bird with membranous wings. The anatomy of this species reveals wings formed by the elongation of the fingers of the hand, which arise directly from the sides of the body and are joined together by a thin membrane of skin without feather covering. The rest of the animal’s body is covered by a layer of fine down. The head has a small beak and two tiny eyes wrapped in a black mask. Its double tail allows it to perform quick turns in the air. Dense teeth and a series of extremely acidic stomachs allow them to consume a diet based mainly on rocks. Weight: 122.5 kg / Height: 2.0 m

The megachiroptera compostellari is a species of flying mammal that can be found in the skies all over the planet. Its body anatomy is extremely similar to that of the floorpiker, as it has a pair of membranous wings formed by an extension of its hands, a forked tail that increases its maneuverability in the air and even its legs are quite similar to those of a bird. However, the head gives it away. It has two large ears that are part of its echolocation system, which allows it to move in absolute darkness thanks to a series of high-pitched sounds it produces with its mouth. It also has a flattened nose with a great sense of smell and two large eyes. Their highly specialized digestive systems allow them to feed on star bramble. Weight: 85.1 kg / Height: 1.8 m

The last species, the wander ichtiornis, is also a subspecies of bird. It has two equally membranous wings, but its anatomy is different from that of the other species. In the wander ichtiornis, the arm is prolonged and ends in a hand whose fingers are interconnected by a skin membrane. In turn, the last finger of each hand is joined to the sides of the body by another thin membrane that completes the wing. The bird’s head ends in a long beak and its tail is thick, short and rounded. The wander ichtiornis makes swooping dives from great heights to hunt prey, usually insects that crawl on the surface. The gills on the inside of their cheeks allow them to absorb water and extract the necessary nutrients from the insects’ bodies. Their torpedo-shaped body is capable of damaging the deck of a ship in one of their dive plunges. Weight: 72.5 kg / Height: 1.5 m

As for the orography of the planet, there are a couple of curiosities worth mentioning. The first of these are the numerous rocky monoliths known as Pillars. Although they look like intentional constructions, they are actually natural rock formations. On top of these Pillars nest mainly the wander ichtiornis. These monoliths are adored by the followers of the Wanderer, since in his notes he tells how they served him as shelter, guide and protection throughout his journey. In many of them you can still find the remains of the bases he established.

Pillars

The second orographic curiosity is the Sores. These formations are found in the form of gigantic grooves on the ground. It really looks as if something had crawled over the land and left a huge footprint in its wake. It is speculated that they may have been caused by sandworms, however, no activity of this species has been recorded on the planet and no fossil or biological remains of any kind have been found to confirm this hypothesis. The origin of the Sores remains a mystery to this day.

One of the Sores

There is little to say about the geology of the planet. About 17 unique rock species can be found in Compostellar. Most of them only serve to obtain ferrite derivatives, except for some that also offer paraffinium.

Some common compostellari rocks

Compostellar has a whole series of interconnected caverns in many regions, which gives depth to the exploration of the planet. These uninhabited caverns have their own flora, already mentioned above, and geology. Stalactites, stalagmites, fungi and bioluminescent flora are predominant here.

A typical compostellari cave

In some cases, the soil of these caves provides the necessary nutrients for the outside crimson grass to grow as well.

As for the climate, as already mentioned, Compostellar is a planet of warm mist, generally with a pleasant temperature. However, although not common, heat storms lash the surface with high temperatures and terrible lightning. It is dangerous to stay outside during one of these storms.

Compostellari heat storm

In short, Compostellar is an exuberant and wonderful planet, with a mysterious history and much still to be discovered. In addition, it is the place where the legend of the Wanderer was forged, the traveler who went around the planet just walking and left his learnings written in eight fragments of what is known as “The Wanderer’s Path”.

What's better than a Paradise Planet? An Earthlike Bountiful Planet with gravity storms, that's what...

What's better than a Paradise Planet? An Earthlike Bountiful Planet with gravity storms, that's what.

https://preview.redd.it/w5fco6frmz0d1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=577ac165cf6af6148da8435f8e52753ecc28e64b

I have discerned what I think is a sort of unwritten two-week rule in the NMS community. You get to sit on discoveries and play with them for two weeks, but after the honeymoon the brotastic nature of the NMS community requires that one bequeath one’s discoveries for all grah brahs to enjoy.

Guys, gals & nonbinary pals, I hereby introduce all y’all to what I think is my most significant NMS discovery, the planet Ebradin (even its original name is pretty sweet):

https://preview.redd.it/i8hqefj9nz0d1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=129f8ddb727bb77f8084c2dabe4835b876ad0440

It’s just gorgeous. I’ve never seen dissonance blend so well into what would otherwise be an Earth-type paradise planet. The sky and water can get reddish, but otherwise the whole landscape is exactly what everyone is looking for. The lifeforms aren’t just abundant — every single one has character.

There’s the adorable hopping shroom cluster.

https://preview.redd.it/r669cp4ynz0d1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=2ca1b9839467109f3becaa38d46f5ae7db173870

Maybe you’ve seen those before. But I’d never seen glowing fish that just fly around before Ebradin.

https://preview.redd.it/6ecothcmoz0d1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=55374605149d75cc332038bc2991fd8888a484cc

The landscape at night is stunningly beautiful. It’s like this everywhere.

https://preview.redd.it/4pi9hmlvoz0d1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=ad7393541ac89adc1837be4264628643ab8e9eb5

“But oh no, storms!” you might say. Chill, anomalbroski. Ebradin would never harsh your NipNip buzz with dangerous storms. The storms on Ebradin are rather totally awesome.

Gravity storms! In exchange for a minor drag on your life support, you can jetpack hundreds (maybe thousands?) of units in the air with just a basic rig. Gravity storms mean you shoot into the air with minimal jetpacking, and on top of that you get a massive jetpack tank boost in a gravity storm, because of course you do.

Finally, the gravity storms make the planet insanely buggy. Portions of landscapes will lift off the ground and twist into themselves like a deranged MC Escher print. They will melt your brain and crash your PS5. Enjoy!

https://preview.redd.it/hw5lmh51sz0d1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=fe3ba2df72485c61da33ad71f7610f672e8c8a31

Ebradin is located in Euclid, so even novice travellerinos can hang ten on these gravity waves.

Thank you NMS community. Don’t say I never did anything nice for you.
