NMS HOT POST 2021/04/2

Since I am very close to completing this expedition, I thought I would give some advice to people just starting, or currently in the middle of it. (Potential spoilers ahead)

  1. As of last night, “acquire an A-class multi tool” is glitched. Don’t waste ur time trying to figure out why it won’t work, and just wait for a patch.

  2. To make money early on, salvaged data is your best friend. You only need about 35 or so to finish all missions, so sell the rest. 15 data goes for about 730,000, so it’s good early game money.

  3. You get nanites for getting to each rendezvous point. These nanites could towards the nanite quest, and will give you about 4,000-5,000 just for getting all 5 rendezvous.

  4. If your game says that your expedition has ended, with the only option to convert into a normal save, close nms and re open your save. Some people don’t lose their save if they press yes, but others do, so just stay on the safe side.

  5. You can get to rendezvous 5 with just the hyperdrive upgrades provided by quests. You don’t need to farm nanites for upgrades.

  6. Don’t play on multiplayer. It’s super bugged right now and I’d leading to tons of crashes and lost progress. I have played from the starting planet to RV5 without multiplayer on, and my game has never crashed or had any terrible bugs. This will hopefully be fixed soon.

  7. You can do missions from any phase no matter what phase you are in. If you are in a convenient spot for a higher phase mission, you can do it to save future you time and energy.

  8. For the farming quest, it counts if you harvest plants from other peoples bases. If you are feeling helpful, make a large farm in your base to assist travelers.

  9. Lots of technology blueprints are rewards for quests. Before spending nanites in the anomaly, check to see if you could get it for free.

  10. The “Buy an A-class ship” quest’s reward is a nice S-class explorer. Grab any A-class early on to get a pretty helpful and cool looking ship.

  11. Save regularly. This goes for all game modes, but expeditions has been bugged and crashes for many people. Keep your progress safe.

  12. RV1 is an amazing planet for later on quests, including “walk 10,000u on extreme worlds”, and “Gather 50 storm crystals”. Complete these early for nice rewards early game.

  13. Inventory upgrades can get Beverly expensive for early-mid game players. Many quests reward you with free inventory upgrades, so take advantage of that.

  14. Since ship fighting is not required of any quests, getting an explorer is the most helpful, as it can get you to the next rendezvous faster and cheaper.

  15. Early on, make a base next to a trade center or minor settlement. Launch fuel is one of the most annoying things to get early game, so free launches near your base is always nice. You also get a galactic trade terminal, multitool box, and technology trader just outside ur base.

  16. Make cool bases! As you progress past RV2, the number of bases drops off immediately. As more people get further in the expedition, the number of bases is sure to go up, but it’s very barren out there.

  17. Start the frigate quest as soon as you can. It is the only quest that will take longer than a day, and can take up to 3-4 days, if you don’t do it effectively. It’s good to get a head start on it.

These are just some tips I picked up along my way through the expedition. If any newer players have any questions, just ask below. If any players in the same situation as me have anything else to add, or noticed something incorrect in my post, let me know below. Have fun exploring, travelers!

New Ship Perk Suggestions

Long ago, NMS only allowed players to own a single ship, making it a major decision on which ship type a traveler should go after. However, realizing this felt clunky, updates have been made over the years, ship slots increased, new tech modules, and new features added. This was a great call, but it did leave one mark: the distinctions between each ship didn’t matter anymore; Haulers don’t even have the benefit of additional cargo space, since all S-class ships can have the same total number of slots.

I was talking ship perks with someone, and it got me thinking that perhaps it would make sense to introduce new strengths to less used ship types. As I was mulling it over, I realized that some of these changes would have to be pretty potent to stand up to current-day standards — poor Shuttles, their only real signature is that their takeoff price is reduced, made obsolete by the auto-recharge modules. So I decided to spitball a few ideas trying to stay true to the ship’s purpose while taking 2024 NMS in mind, and see if the following suggestions are strong enough to make you think “oh yeah, I’d definitely want to own a [ship type].”

Shuttles:

  1. 25% faster flight speed than others while in-atmosphere.
  2. 100% faster Pulse Drive speed.
  3. Takeoffs and landings are quicker and snappier.

Haulers:

  1. Cargo slots are double-sized, just like Freighters and storage containers.
  2. One storage augmentation slot unlocks two slots when used to unlock cargo slots.
  3. When the Teleport Receiver is installed, Hauler item teleport range is unlimited within the same star system.

Living:

  1. Increased chance of finding Space Encounters while pulsing. Alien Traders completely removed from encounter pool (Frequency 12 > 0). Odds of Rogue Black Hole and Relic Gate events tripled (Frequency 1 > 3).
  2. Eating food while in a ship refuels the ship’s hyper drive, pulse drive, launch thrusters, and damaged shields.

Explorer:

  1. Scanning one planet scans every planet in the system.
  2. Hyperdrive chain jumps. When setting a waypoint on the galactic map, can directly jump to that waypoint as long as the Explorer would have enough fuel to reach there, or up to 5 jumps (aka 5x listed hyperdrive range).

Let me know if these are along the right lines, and whether you’d fly one of these if they had these perks.

Just a Quick Appreciation

While I struggle with anxiety so it is difficult for me to egg myself into the multiplayer scene in the game, I just have to applaud ALL of you guys. This is the most non-toxic gaming community I think I’ve ever seen and I have been a gamer for a goood…
