NMS HOT POST 2022/06/12

Just finished Expedition 7

It was a rollercoaster. I rage quit a few times after dying, some due to my own incompetency, some due to glitches. I finally found a way to easily backup my saves, but after that I only died once after being ambushed by a bunch of pirates in space.

Other than the frustration of permadeath it was really a lot of fun. The real joy to me in this game is improving things: your character, your ship, your mechs, your base, etc. When you have all of that stuff close to maxed out the game becomes boring. Prior to the expedition I would log in, collect my spoils from my frigates, fight sentinels for a bit to get Walker Brains, maybe farm some mats and then log out because there is nothing else I really wanted to do. It had become rote.

The expedition brought back the olden days when I had nothing and didn't really know what I was doing. I look forward to the next one.

No Man's Sky, Psychedelic 70s Spaceship Art & Me: A Photo-Heavy Love Letter

When I was six or seven years old, I checked out a copy of Terran Trade Authority: Spacecraft 2000 – 2100 AD by Stewart Crowley and paintings by Colin Hay (1978). This book rocked my world. It wasn’t just that it was filled with gloriously psychedelic paintings of spacecraft by Colin Hay: It also featured commentary and backstory about those ships. My brain was set on fire!

Fast forward to 2021: I’m a middle aged guy, but I still love spaceships. I stumbled across some NMS screenshots on Reddit, and decided to buy a new Xbox just so I could play this amazing looking game. Everything that I loved about that old book I live in NMS: Piecing together an understanding of alien civilizations through narrative snippets, mysterious alien relics, and the shattered skeletons of wrecked freighters whether they’re half-buried in an ancient landscape or drifting in the cold vacuum.

I finally got my living ship, which has proved to be the climax of an incredible experience. When I first saw it through the neon orange and green clouds of a radioactive superstorm, I was floored. Not only is my ship a color pattern that I wanted, but none of the screenshots I had seen previously did the color-shifting organic shapes justice. Looking around in the cockpit, I was especially tickled by the biological vents spewing a breathable atmosphere for me.

Love at First Sight

It hit me when I was flying around taking photos of my ship — NMS has captured and recreated the visuals and atmosphere of those old 70s psychedelic space ship paintings I loved so much.

I do fly my living ship (named Ikizukuri), but I finally found my “keeper” end game ship in Eissentam. I’ve loved that the NMS community shares coordinates for cool ships, but it was really important to me (and fun) for me to spend the time finding the exact ship I wanted for myself. I’ve included coordinates for this ship in the attached screenshots, in case anyone playing in Eissentam wants to grab it. I’ve still got a lot more pimping/customization to do on my exotic (named Anima), which is itself a lot of fun. I’m optimizing it for maneuverability and hyperspace range — they’re currently sitting at 877.3 & 2,709.0, which is a good start.

Long story short — I freaking love this game, since it lets me bring those old 70s psychedelic spaceship paintings I loved as a kid to life. I’m 200 hours in, and there’s still a lot of Eissentam to explore!

Is it just me or is selling salvaged Sentinel interceptors just extremely lucrative for the amount g...

Like I’m talking about it only takes me less than 30 minutes between drawing the ire of the Sentinels, to bringing up the Sentinel alert level to level 5, to destroying the Sentinel capital ship, to searching for the dissonant spike, to restoring the harmonic brain, and then to finally selling the salvaged ship. Like it takes me less than 30 minutes to make about 30 to 80 million. It used to take me hours upon hours to farm for Credits when now it only takes me less than half of that time or even just a fraction of that time. I remember when I used to make activated indium factories, when I used to make nip nip farms, when I used to activate multiple navigation charts to try to get lucky to find salvaged ships to sell, when I used to mass buy system goods and resell them at other systems, and when I used to make mass farms and factories to gather the raw ingredients just to craft fusion ignitors and stasis devices to sell. Now I don’t have to go through all of that anymore.

At the moment I’m still hunting for the most efficient method of farming Nanites, and I feel like my best method so far has been jumping from station to station of pirate systems and buying all of the suspicious goods and reselling the technology that I get from them.

Destroying a Sentinel capital ship should suppress them for a period of time

I was indulging in a little bit of light piracy yesterday, and after destroying several waves of Sentinels and their capital ship, the very next merchant freighter I attacked started the whole response routine all over again. After killing two of their capital ships and realising they still weren’t getting the message, I just went back to ignoring them entirely, which is pretty easy to do with just the one ship which tries to stop you at alert level 1.

Maybe I’m missing something obvious here, but it seems like destroying a Sentinel capital ship ought to disable them in that system for a period of time, the same as destroying the pillar on a planet does?

I am absolutely blown away by how good this runs on Switch

I’ve got about 2000 hours between Xbox and PC. I bought the Switch version on launch and it was so-so. I mean I didn’t really expect MUCH in the way of performance.

Must have been one of the recent updates, but holy HELL how did the developers do this!? Between game engine optimization and the raw talent of the HG team, I am beside myself.

I don’t want to reach too deep into my pocket full of dreams but I hope Light No Fire comes to Switch as well. I was literally about to sell my OLED last week until I fired up NMS again.
