NMS HOT POST 2023/01/3

NMS Q&A thread! Ask questions, provide answers or just submit a tip. We hope this helps our valued OP’s get more out of the game. See comments for more details.

This post will be refreshed every few days. The old post are still available for answering questions in those post.

Below are a few popular questions that we've received from our past FAQ thread. As always we ask that everyone be respectful and we welcome everyone's contribution so have fun!

Q- I'm keen to start a new passive money making pursuit. What are some good ideas or guides post-Waypoint?

A#1- Gold farm, then take that stack and sell it at a terminal (not traders) in systems that sell gold. Sell all your gold to the terminal and crash the economy. Then buy it all back at 80% off discount. You just got free money and keep all the gold. All this takes is an initial investment on a gold farm, then you carry all that gold with you and just sell/buy back when you get to another system that sells gold. With 50 stacks in my ship's cargo hold, I can make somewhere around 150 million units in each system I do this in.

A#2- Start a Farm, Fusion Igniters or Statis Devices Farm which will increase your profits to 100- 200 mil fairly quickly and you can even send out multiple freighter missions which will help you get aronium, magno-gold, Enriched carbon and more which will increase the profits even more.

A#3- Quickest way I've found to make a TON of units: Harvesting Storm Crystals. Find a VERY hot planet that has frequent fire storms. DURING STORMS ONLY – you can see the bright white light from Storm Crystals if you fly around low enough. Fly to them, land, quickly harvest them, get back in your ship and fly to the next before you burn up. Q-Where can I post ships and other cool stuff that I want to share with the public? A-You can always post on this sub and now the NMSGlyphExchange is live! Q-How do I get the Advanced Mining Laser? I don't have the option to craft one, and the multi-tool upgrade vendor at the space station doesn't have the blueprint for sale.

A- In order to get it, you have to look for the blueprints in crashed ships or abandoned facilities. You get it from the main story (awakenings) or you can buy it on the anomaly.

Q-What do I actually do in the game? I finished the tutorial, is there anything else beside gathering stuff, building a base and repeat?

A#1- It’s really whatever you want, there’s a base story, (assuming you haven’t completed it already), follow the quest log and you’ll figure it out, but things You’d want to do for end game? You can collect multiple multitools, ships, built a fleet for your freighter, etc.

Q- Is there a planet that is populated by many players, and they built their base close to each others like a city?

A- Yeah its the Galactic Hub Project, Its a place where many people have bases and each day the numbers grow. Please help yourself. There are many factions in NMS that do this, even NMS Pirates Hub.

Q- I'm still pretty early into the game, just making my way to the center of the galaxy, what should I be spending my credits on?

A- Go hang around a outlaw/pirate trading post. Cheapest S-class start at around 8-8.5 million without a trade-in. I recommend Vykeen pirate, as then you have two good and 1 remote chances at high-maneuverability S-class: fighter, solar, exotic.

Interceptor update, detailed guide - Sentinel ship and multitool hunting

Interceptor update, detailed guide - Sentinel ship and multitool hunting

Hi, I’ve seen a lot of players still don’t know basics from new update or don’t know some things from it. So I decided to create a detailed guide. It’s written step by step but I assume some really “basic basics” are known to a reader so I skip those. Still I hope this will help to some players in their gaming. I also included Q&A at the end but feel free to ask, I will answer if I know the answer 🙂 That Q&A section is made from questions from this Reddit.

Basic informations

https://preview.redd.it/mnmmqzd1q2ta1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=898bb718869f2bc0e234b783c3c4c7caa8b250fb

Those are Corrupted Sentinels. They are your key to your hunting, whether you want jetpack, multitool or Sentinel ship. You can only find them on special planets labeled with “Corrupted Sentinels”. They won’t attack you on their own (as normal non-aggressive Sentinels) and you can actually make nice photos with them like that. When you hit them, the hunt will start and you will have to fight 5 waves of them. They have ability to go invisible and they have pretty strong ranged attacks.

https://preview.redd.it/pxgvwxrbq2ta1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e073e03c5b49174f1ca3ad4e2e3e3fd004735820

To find planets with Corrupted Sentinels you have to either search for them manually or you can use Dreadnought AI Fragment, which will label for you a planet with Corrupted Sentinels and ship (more to that in ship hunting section).

How to find Sentinel multitools and jetpack

To find Sentinel multitool/jetpack, you have to find Harmonic camp. To find it, you have to actually fight Corrupted Sentinels. They have a chance to drop Echo Locator:

https://preview.redd.it/ow011y06r2ta1.png?width=653&format=png&auto=webp&s=7548c72791d8c748f84e1c519692eb72915bcde1

Echo Locator is used to locate Harmonic camp on the planet. You actually have to be in the system with planet with Corrupted Sentinels on it or you won’t be able to use this item !

After obtaining Echo Locator, you can use it to get direct position of Harmonic camp, it looks like this:

https://preview.redd.it/t4vxarixr2ta1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e6a84769a97c226d1ab9f033b4d3a45d605cfdc0

The things you care about are mainly the middle big building and tent on the left from it. Tent has free multitool for you but it’s locked and you first have to solve the puzzle.

https://preview.redd.it/1ufn9vzas2ta1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9d3b8166e628cd40c08a8482177566c15ab20567

To solve the puzzle, you have to enter the terminal in the main building. You can see it’s locked.

https://preview.redd.it/qcx2ni0es2ta1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=624975b4d973af20b7eae771e487f65930c6b924

To unlock terminal and your multitool, you have to solve the puzzle. First you have to “Scan memory registers” to get a hint.

https://preview.redd.it/zd0d814qs2ta1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=41c9d2f26755c054db16e02d648a54d200952c42

Once you get a hint, it’s pretty easy to even guess what to do next. You have 3 pieces of simple math in front of you. You have to calculate the result of each one. So there it is: 9, 9 and 4. You have to remember those 3 results (doesn’t matter in which order). Then you can go back via “Access main interface” and click on “Input override glyphs”.

https://preview.redd.it/w7h2ccu5t2ta1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=249b85485b14342e22a7db62103df46c51fbf790

Now you just have to enter glyphs with numbers same as your results. In this case I had to enter glyphs with numbers 9, 9 and 4.

https://preview.redd.it/0697vciat2ta1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f76f4753f03e7a69b105de42ae265d192c7a0f15

And that’s it, you can take your free jetpack from terminal and free multitool from nearby tent.
——————–

How to find crashed Sentinel ships and claim them

There are 2 main ways how to find them.

First one might be a lot easier for people just already looking for multitools. Since you already found the Harmonic camp on the planet, you can in the same terminal you unlocked, ask for coordinates for the crashed ship on the planet. Terminal will give you exact location and mark on the radar, where the ship is. All you have to do is to fly there.

The second way is much better for hunters who want to hunt many ships and not only 1. When you start attacking Corrupted Sentinels on the ground, you can then jump into your ship and those Sentinels will call their ships to fight you. All you have to do is to beat their 4 waves and then the best part comes, 5th wave is fight you vs few Sentinel ships + Sentinel Freighteir – and that’s what you care about. When you’ll manage to destroy Sentinel Freighter, you will always get Dreadnought AI Fragment.

https://preview.redd.it/eyctcdplw2ta1.png?width=649&format=png&auto=webp&s=5dd0aed3dc78865eebb191bb5a9d4a33fc89ce1c

Dreadnought AI Fragment is very handy item. It can mark crashed Sentinel ship on the planet BUT also when you aren’t in the system with Corrupted Sentinels planet, it will mark you the closest system with such a planet to you. This is great item for hunters to actually not waste time with first way of finding ships. After using Dreadnought AI Fragment it will give you the aprox. location of the crashed ship on the planet. That “aprox. location” is really small circle around that label and you will be able to notice the ship on your arrival most of the time. If not, you can just land on that spot and with your Visor you can just follow the path (100 – 700 units most of the time, really small range as I said).

If you’ll use Dreadnought AI Fragment in a system without corrupted sentinels, you will get your closest system with such planet marked on your Galaxy Map. You can see a purple-white icon near that system and you’ll get followable quest so the map actually tries to take you there.

https://preview.redd.it/wig5v5lex2ta1.png?width=750&format=png&auto=webp&s=d11dd6dad84d92a41ce298215632531c6dc5f150

——————–

How to claim crashed Sentinel ship

To claim crashed Sentinel ship you can just follow up the quest you will get when you click on the ship. However, if you want more detailed info, here it is:

https://preview.redd.it/fx8n0ao6u2ta1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0ce6bc6013b5073fc250cc5b0e1d1d935fa788c4

After you found your ship, click on it and you’ll see what you actually need to repair it. It’s always the same, so farming some resources more times might get handy in future 🙂

https://preview.redd.it/fiszia8eu2ta1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=23c3e648f78c26aba777bae2654490e65e99dcdd

You want to grab everything from the ship and specially the “Hyaline Brain” which is essential for your repair.

https://preview.redd.it/2cs6e1shu2ta1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3bed7c0843ce82679762987a5a2bc937eb13b3f9

You need Hyaline Brain to obtain Harmonic Brain and actually get control over your new ship. All you have to do is to click on Hyaline Brain in your inventory and it will give you the location of small base-like relic.

https://preview.redd.it/xsf7of1pu2ta1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ae0a077b543d580daf3ec49f7d06acaa92ea7925

It looks like this.

https://preview.redd.it/ei8ygxvqu2ta1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=32480dd768de4cf8f47044be5a1da9b2ed19d58c

Then you need to go up and start talking with relic. After short dialogue you will get your Harmonic brain.

https://preview.redd.it/o8bmlrivu2ta1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2720966e2636b73988faecd3017abdd795df2016

You also need 2 more materials to claim your ship. One is Radiant Shard which is pretty easy to obtain. You just have to find big purple crystal like this and mine it (you need Advanced Mining Laser to mine it !).

https://preview.redd.it/6t1tkh47v2ta1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9e0270a16a8afbcd5f1f86dcfd4f103c0f12b8d2

After you have even your Radiant Shard, you need the most tricky part and it’s Inverted Mirror. This item is obtainable just by destroying big black-purple Corrupted Sentinel machine. It looks like this, basically big purple mining-like thing.

https://preview.redd.it/v74ac66jv2ta1.jpg?width=326&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=878f1dd1ebec0987ef7c2e17389376c12c482651

You need to shoot it and destroy it (which will of course provoke all Corrupted Sentinels so you will have to fight again). After destroying it, you will automatically get Inverted Mirror into your inventory.

And that’s all, you can go back to your crashed ship, repair it and you are proud owner of your own Sentinel ship 🙂
——————–

Q&A

Can I search for those items as novice?
I wouldn’t recommend it as Corrupted Sentinels can be kinda difficult to fight for a novice player. Also you need at least average or good dmg on your weapon to have a chance to survive.

How many ships can spawn on one planet?
From what I know from my experience, 99% of Corrupted Planets have 2 crashed ships. Not I don’t know if the rest is some kind of bug or if there is some generating chance. But to find both ships you’ll need the Dreadnought AI Fragment most of the time.

Are those ships the same spawn type?
No, those 2 ships on the same planet are always different spawns. You can have C class and S class on the same planet and you can find 2 different shapes and colors.

How rare is S class ship?
As far as I can tell, I have around 150 founded ships behind me and I found 1 S class, on top of that really ugly. C classes are most common and B and A classes have aprox. the same chance to spawn I guess. But yea, S class is kinda super rare to find, even with good colors and shape.

I have occupied slots in my multitool, what to do?

https://preview.redd.it/sukgcxy2z2ta1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1394ffb4ab4a8a131e98c844f040ce9d7f3b2736

Every found multitool has such occupied slots and all you have to do is to repair them. You can get materials for repairing either from fights with Corrupted Sentinels or from Radiant Shards and Inverted Mirrors.

NMS is the most beautiful game I have ever played.

I have been playing since 2016 when it came out, but the realization didn’t hit me until today. There’s so much beauty in the game. The universe of this game created itself. Every flora, fauna, behavior of living creatures, the terrain, the cave systems, the oceans, the trees, almost everything if not everything, was generated by an engine. Not even the developers know what everything in NMS is. This is nothing new, of course, but with the added fact that there are 255 galaxies and 18 quintillion worlds in this game still puts me in awe. The people who did the math said it would take about 500 billion+ years to explore every galaxy, star system, planet, anomaly, and space station in the game.

You will never explore all of NMS. Your children will never explore all of NMS, nor your great grandchildren, nor your great-grandchildren’s great-grandchildren’s great-grandchildren and so on. If the game manages to live on for thousands of years and years to come (it likely won’t but for argument sake let’s say it does), it will likely still not be fully explored and people who find old bases (As it will likely be easier to find old player bases) from these previous and close following years will be as abandoned and relic like as the already implemented ruins we find on planets that we didn’t build. The visuals are insane. Warping into a new start system and seeing the sun (or suns!) with their glow and shine reflecting off the corners of solar system gets me every time. The faint glow of distant stars and the color of your star system are miraculous to see, even if you have been playing this game for about 6 years.

The music is another thing altogether, sometimes it sounds sad, sometimes it sounds fast and action packed, but for the most part there’s a common theme; loneliness and solitude in a vast universe. The music is the perfect mix between sad, ominous, and nostalgic that perfectly makes you realize: “Damn. I’m alone here in this void.” Of course Hello Games implemented ways to see other players and do missions with them, but just the normal feel of the game still makes you feel lonely. It’s great, and 65daysofstatic couldn’t have done a better job.

No Man’s Sky is not just a space exploration game, it’s an infinite feeling mysterious space exploration flight simulator survival economy trading game, with a great soundtrack, a overarching story that gives you an existential crisis, and a redemption story better than Avatar: The last Airbender.

Expedition 7 Redux: Completed without dying (comment for details).

Read a post by another traveller a few days back who completed the expedition without dying (apologies to you, Traveller, I’ve forgotten your name). I had actually started a new run of the expedition at that time anyway with the intent to see how much I could do before you HAD to die. Turns out… you don’t. But this post opened the possibility of completing the expedition without dying. Here’s how it went:

I started off by ignoring my ship. I decided I was going to try to find a crashed ship on foot or a trading post where I could buy one. As it happened, that wasn’t in the cards. I did a huge circle that took 10 hours on foot on the starting planet but was never fortunate enough to find either of those things. What I DID find, though was a minor settlement where I promptly bought a couple hermetic seals. I also bought the blueprint for the Advanced Mining Laser.

During my wanderings, I dug up a lot of buried tech modules and found a fair number of clusters of ancient data structures. These yielded some drop pod maps, which are actually reasonably valuable. I sold off both the the tech modules and maps at trade terminals (I found 3 or 4 in the wild). I also encountered a lot of curious deposits. Mined a few of those after installing the AML and refined into nanites while I waited for storms to blow over.

When I finally arrived at my ship, it was 10 hours in, I had about 12 million units and just over 5200 nanites. I’d also found a couple drop pods to add inventory slots and even got a few upgrades for the exosuit and ship from damaged machinery. I also learned 177 words and managed to bag a decent C class multitool with a lot more slots than the starting weapon.

After fixing the ship, I was in a position where I really just needed to make a base on an infested world as the only obstacle and then I was golden for all other milestones in the Expedition. What I did was I went to Uncharted red and green star systems to search for the proper world type (I purchased the drive blueprints on the Anomaly after I got my ship up and running).

I had grabbed maps for commercial buildings to use to search for a base computer in the wild (this is one of the things these charts can locate) and used those on the proper world when I finally found one (actually didn’t take too long. Maybe a dozen systems). Why uncharted? Well, that’s because the planets don’t have any buildings other than shelters and wild base computers. It took a grand total of 2 maps before I located a wild base computer. I flew in, landed, claimed it, and built a base. The game considered that good enough for the milestone.

Now I was all set. I just carried on from there and completed the expedition. I refused to die and did it without doing it on purpose. Dying was the only milestone I had left at the end, and turns out at the very end, the game kind of makes you ‘semi’ die, as it restarts you as if you’d died. But the key here is… you spawn in with all your stuff. You lose nothing. So you never really die at all, but the game gives you that milestone (which was the final unfinished one for me in this expedition) when you spawn in after the end.

Anyway, the grand total play time was about 15 hours. Obviously not the optimal way to play it, but it was a fun experiment and very satisfying.
