An Update Long Overdue…

I have been playing NMS since its release in 2016 and it's procession from the game it was to what it is now has been tremendous, but I feel one are of the game has been completely overlooked. More than half of the planets in the game feature water, but there isn't much to do there. Most ocean have the same life, regardless of what type of planet it is on and the variety of sea life is shockingly inadequate. To add to all of this, did you know there is a submersible and base pieces for underwater bases? Great, however there isn't really much incentive to build here as most seas are very shallow and it isn't much fun to take your submersible to a depth of 20'.

It would be great to really "dive" into the potential for the ocean, seas and lakes found all throughout the galaxies. Deeper ocean, carverns, cliffs and other underwater features could be cool to explore. If they made the oceans VERY deep (600m+), to the point that you count feasible explore without a submersible, that could be cool. A greater variety of sea life, some that could even be rideable underwater could be fun to experience. Lastly, there is great potential with the base parts designed for water areas.

I know exploring space and planet-side is the big draw to the game, but I wonder how much of this is driven simply based on the fact that water in this game is more of a hassle than an experience. What do you all think about the possibilities of a water-based update?

An Expedition of My Own - Getting the "To Live Forever" Achievement

Well, I finally went and did it. I’m among the 0.7% of NMS players on Steam who journeyed to the center of Euclid in Permadeath mode.

Since I did all of last year’s Expeditions when they came out, I decided to make my own expedition-like experience – earning the “To Live Forever” achievement. The first hour or so was worrying. There were some close calls here and there. But my main impression of the Permadeath mode was annoyance:

  • I kept hitting the inventory limitations even after setting up a base and freighter.
  • Trying to mine guaranteed a Sentinel spawning nearby and getting big mad at my audacity.
  • Pirates showing up and offering to free up inventory slots by taking my stuff every other time I went into space.

My chosen method was to go up the main story/quest line. It’s been a long time and the changes Hello Games made to it since the days of yore were interesting to see. I also took the opportunity to make some different choices this time around. It turns out that everybody is remarkably chill with letting Artemis die.

In the end, I reset the simulation and I found myself on an extreme radioactive planet in another galaxy with a bunch of broken gear. I struggled for a moment, but since I was planning on deleting my Permadeath save anyway, I calmly waited and let it self-wipe.

Going back to my legacy save and seeing the vast expanses of inventory space was like booting up a whole different game.

Mock of how the exosuit UI should present stats

Mock of how the exosuit UI should present stats

The UI does not show actual stats, so we can’t tell

  • if adjacencies are working without manually testing each upgrade
  • how long a jetpack lasts and how long it takes to recharge
  • how long we can sprint and how ling it takes to recharge
  • how much shields we actually have
  • how long the S class environment protection upgrades last

To solve this, the UI should show the actual values:

I have too many ships.

I have too many ships.

I found a sentinel ship I liked and had to scrap another ship before I could claim it. I’m realizing that I dont need all the ships I have, and I want to change things up. At the same time I dont want to just scrap them (because they’re pretty). So I figured I would offer them up on here.

A starborn runner (name is different because its the one I did the expedition with), and 2 living ships that I can’t remember the coords to.

I’m not sure if ship trading is still working or not, so let me know if this isn’t possible. Otherwise just dm me which one you want and we’ll work things out. I’ll be online for a little while.
