Anyone on the same boat ?

Day 1 player here, kind of old (50), and only interested in exploration.

I enjoyed v1 tremendously, still my favorite gaming moments to date.

So at a personal level, i’m only interested in terrain generation and the rendering engine, the rest doesn’t exist.

I never built a base, didn’t do the stories/missions (and will never if it involves killing creature for sport/money), never used any of the fancy gadgets

All i do and want is to play Creative and have nice walks on exotic environements with a sense of mystery and discovery to take pictures and memories, with vintage humanist SF books in mind (thinking Van Vogt, Clarke, etc.).

v1 (up to PF) gave me a lot of that.

Much less since the downgrading of the terrain generation to round hills, and i’m part of the old timers that think NMS has lost a bit of its soul.

But this game remains a unique and marvelous wonder in the gaming galaxy imho and i can’t help being attracted to it, patiently waiting for THE update that will bring back everything i miss.

That said, i understand the directions it took.

The two main features besides the story are now multiplayer and base building.

Whatever we think of them, they were and still are necessary to the game: multiplayer was the n°1 requested feature and was not negociable and bases provide half of the screenshots on this reddit so they are obviously now one of the foundations (pun intended) of NMS.

The other gadgets certainly add some colors to that soft, the living ships are beautiful, etc.

Everything’s all right, i can see why HG did and added what they did, and i’m thankfull for that: even if i don’t use any of it, the game simply wouldn’t be there anymore if it weren’t for those features.

My only real complain is that base building prevent HG to have the full liberty to reset the universe often, which in turn severely limits the evolutions they can bring to the terrain generation :-/

I know they’re trying to workaround that, but it can’t be the same as full freedom for them.

At its core, NMS is a unique jewel, i hope it remains true to this core, while adding bells and whistles for the more action oriented players, there’s room for everyone in this universe.

The reason for this post is that, seeing how many people regularly request PVP, combat improvement, melee weapons, war factions, etc, i’m wondering if there are many lonely hippie travelers on this boat.

Peace.

Getting Oxygen from a Freighter Base

Hey all. If you like to use a freighter as you primary base, and you don’t want to go through all the trouble of building a planetary base to get your Oxygen, it’s possible to get it entirely from your freighter! Here are the steps for a net gain of 2250 Oxygen, and you can of course scale up for your needs.

1) Collect 250 Nitrogen gas from a Stellar Extractor room. Yes, these things are actually useful! (Okay, and they are also known to be a bit buggy, but i am able to do this rather reliably. I’ll go over the bugs i’ve encountered and how to deal with them below.) To get Nitrogen from these things, park your freighter in a RED star system the day before. It’ll be ready when you start up NMS next time.

2) Harvest 3 Echinocactus plants from your Cultivation Chambers. Echinocactus is the most efficient since it gives you 100 per plant, but any of these will work: Star Bramble, Fungal Cluster, Echinocactus, Solar Vine, Frostwort, or Gamma Weed. You’ll need a total of 250 of whichever crop you have.

3) Grab 25 Chlorine and 50 Condensed Carbon from storage. Have 150 Oxygen on hand.

4) Go to your Refiners and start refining! Note that these are all “net gain” recipes, meaning that you don’t lose any of your starting materials. The extra Chlorine and Condensed Carbon can go back into storage for next time.

Refine 50 Condensed Carbon + 100 Oxygen -> 300 Condensed Carbon.

Refine 25 Chlorine + 50 Oxygen -> 150 Chlorine.

Refine 125 Chlorine -> 250 Salt.

Refine 250 Salt + 250 Nitrogen -> 250 Kelp Sacs.

Refine 250 Kelp Sacs, 250 Condensed Carbon, and 250 crop of choice into 2400 Oxygen. This particular recipe is a bit slow, so i’d recommend splitting it up into 4 or even 8 refiners. Voila!

———————————————-

Okay, so let’s talk about those Stellar Extractor rooms and their little bugs? Here’s what i have personally encountered and how i’ve been able to work through them. If you know of other bugs and workarounds, please feel free to add them in the comments? Thanks! Anyway…

When you first build a Stellar Extractor room, it seems to be important to wait a few minutes until it produces at least one unit of something and then collect it. Otherwise it might not work right. This only needs to be done once, and that’s when you first build the room.

If you check your Stellar Extractor and it doesn’t have anything in it when it should, try going into the build menu, removing the room, and then replacing it. More often than not, the gathered materials have magically reappeared for me after doing this. I’ve only encountered this a few times ever, though, so your mileage may vary.

Finally, if you’d rather not deal with Stellar Extractor rooms at all, you don’t have to! Travel to any star system with water, hop in a starship, and scour the ocean floors with a Positron Ejector to collect the Kelp Sacs growing there. As a bonus, this will probably also get you a bunch of Cyto-Phosphate, Carbon, Salt, and a few other things.

Anyway, i hope you find this information useful. Good luck and have fun, fellow Travellers!

Base teleporters dropping me through the floor when I teleport in since Omega

As long as I’ve been playing the game, surprise behaviour when teleporting into a base was an occasional issue. Sometimes I’d find myself thrown sideways out of the base, sometimes (if the teleport device was at least one level above ground) depositing me at ground level (or out in the water for underwater). Since the Omega update, the latter behaviour is now happening 99% of the time in all such bases.

Anybody else seeing this behaviour? I long ago started building my bases to compensate (side doors in the foundations and so on), but it’s annoying to have this happen so often, and particularly annoying in Permadeath (where I now spend most of my time).

A Lost Traveller

It has been over 7 years since we first picked up the game together. We traveled thousands of light-years and saw many beautiful and dangerous worlds. We became rich. We became powerful. We became brothers. The last 7 months of traveling through the cosmos alone has been empty. You weren’t just a fellow traveler. You were my best friend. I will never stop exploring and seeking new discoveries but I would trade everything we gained to have you back for just a moment. I miss you Trent. You were my brother. All I can hope is that this is simply the end of this iteration and that you’ll be able to see the wonders of the universe first hand without the need for a screen. I love you and I miss you my friend. Rest in peace.

PSA: If you will add a biofuel reactor to your base, I'll fuel it when I visit....

Nothing more frustrating than teleporting into a base for, say some quick Mould, and having to fly to space, dock with the station, and teleport back home.

If folks would add a reactor just in case things go south on their power supply, I have zero problem fueling the reactor with some Carbon while I’m there

I just thought about this because I’m on one of the planets with every glyph, and I keep running into bases with no power. I’ll hook ya up, it’s only fair. 😁
