Novice tips to S Class multitool hunting

Novice tips to S Class multitool hunting

Hello, I’ve made a few post of the past weeks with 8-10 multitools (MTs) that I’ve found recently over the past year. I’ve been hunting tools since launch and thankfully ish that it has gotten a lot easier.

This seems like common since, but I had several questions arise, so I thought an update may be useful to some newbies.

Tools are pooled at the system/space station (SS) level and planetary levels. In general the SS level usually carries the dominate tool from each planet. You can see this by landing on each planet in the system and reloading your save. Then fly back to the SS and you’ll see a different tool, this tool will be the dominate tool for that planet in most cases.

  1. Decide on your hunting method
    1. duplicating inhabitable outpost (IOs) maps
      1. whatever method you use to dup
    2. trading navigation data (ND) for maps
      1. trade NDs for inhabited outpost (IOs) maps and maybe a few ancient artifact maps
      2. go to a couple wealthy systems and visit a planet
      3. use 6 or so maps to load up the HUD with the NPC buildings, there should be one minor settlement.
      4. check the minor settlement (MS) to see if it sells nd, if not use another map until the next minor settlement shows up, rinse and repeat. Once the NDs are found place a base computer down with a base name that makes sense to you. I use xxx NavData where xxx is the quantity sold at the minor settlement. repeat this in at least 1 other wealth system. This way you have access to a few hundred NDs.
      5. take any opportunity to gather more NDs, little cubes laying around space stations and minor settlements.
    3. designate a ship as your hunting ship with a good MT
      1. you will want, good shields, warp capable (long distances not required), decent weapons
      2. keep only the basic necessities in your ship, no materials that may attract the attention of system authorities / pirates. Otherwise they will pester/distract you from the goal
      3. take any opportunity to gather more nds, little cubes laying around space stations and minor settlements.
      4. good multitool is helpful for the planets with aggressive sentinels but when I’m hunting I avoid any entanglement the distracts me from the MT Hunt.
    4. MT Hunting (when starting out)
      1. Warp to a system go to SS and check MT class, if it’s not A class then move to next system. I only say this for newbies, you can hunt MTs in SSs with B & C’s but has the class goes down it can get more complex hunting for an S class on the planets.
      2. When the A class is found reload a save on each planet and check the SS for the dominate MT. Note: generally it will not show the 2ndary MT on the planet. The 2ndary MT is the MT that shows up in cabinet once you reload your save either at the planet you are on or other planet in the system or space station.
      3. If you have checked all the dominate tools for each planet and if non of them are what you are looking for then you can bail on that system. However, you may want to find the dominate tool on each planet even if it’s not the style you want to find. The 2ndary tools can be the alien, experimental and/or anomalous MTs. This all about your tolerance for the repetitiveness and time.

So I think that is probably a good start for those that are new to NMS. I’m sure many will chime in with additional tips/tricks to help out.

These are all the S classes I’ve found in the past year or so.

Glitched Low Orbit Derelict Freighters: What they are and how to spawn them

Glitched Low Orbit Derelict Freighters: What they are and how to spawn them

The Glitched Low Orbit Derelict Freighter

u/stharward has written the definitive guide on derelict freighters, and if you haven’t read that it’s worth starting there. This post on the Glitched Low Orbit, or GLO, Derelict Freighter should be considered an addendum to their work.

What is the Glitched Low Orbit Derelict Freight?

Simply put, a GLO derelict is one that spawns in the upper atmosphere of a planetary body. It is a derelict freighter that is really no different from the “standard” derelict: you can land on it, and run it as you would a regular derelict freighter (including collecting the captain’s log, crew manifest, and reward at the end). The catch is that some of the derelict “rules” are different when a derelict is in the atmosphere of a planetary body.

GLO derelicts provide some stunning views.

How do I spawn one?

I’ve only been able to do this with moons. Maybe someone else can find a way to make it work with planets, but for now you need a planet with at least one moon.

The procedure goes like this.

Step 1. Line up a moon behind its planet like so. You want that moon behind the planet such that you will pass through the atmosphere of the latter. Precise alignment may not be necessary, but this general lineup is how I get the GLO derelict to spawn reliably.

Step 1. Line up the moon behind the planet and aim for the atmosphere.

Step 2. Activate your emergency broadcast receiver.

Step 3. Align your ship such that it will pass through the upper atmosphere of the planet. You don’t want to aim for the planet itself. You just want to skim the atmosphere.

Step 4. Activate your pulse drive.

Step 4. Pulse so you enter the atmosphere of the planet.

Step 5. If you aimed right, you’ll enter the atmosphere of the planet and it will drop you out of pulse.

Step 6. This is the somewhat-tricky part. Aim your ship at the moon, thrust a little, and then try to pulse. You may have to lift the nose of your ship a bit, but keep lifting the nose a little at a time, thrusting, and then trying pulse until it engages.

Step 6. Nose up and pulse to the moon.

Step 7. You are now headed for the moon. Just wait patiently.

Pulsing out of the planet’s atmosphere to the moon.

Step 8. You’ll enter the moon’s atmosphere, and drop out of pulse. The derelict should appear in the atmosphere directly ahead.

Step 8. When you drop out of pulse the GLO derelict will appear.

Step 9. Profit!

How does the GLO Derelict Freighter differ from the “standard” derelict?

From u/stharward we know that every region in the galaxy has one derelict “pool”, and that the star systems in that region obtain its derelict from that pool. Derelicts are identified by name, and each named freighter has a fixed class of tech upgrade at the end, and the same enemies. The layout of the freighter changes based on the star system, but if the freighter name is the same, then it will still have the same class of upgrade, and the same hostiles, regardless of layout.

A GLO derelict, however, is determined by the planetary body in which it spawns and does not seem to pull from the “pool” of regional derelicts (more research is needed here, as I’ve only explored handful of systems). The same moon will always spawn the same freighter. If the system has two moons, those two moons will spawn different freighters.

This also means that the GLO freighter can have a different class of tech upgrade than the system freighter. For example, the system freighter for 0192FD5D1C15 is the “MS Riyako’s Glory” and gives B-class upgrades, but the moon Ebloem Major (3192FD5D1C15) has the freighter “SV Suwaj XVIII” and it spawns C-class upgrades.

How are the freighter “rules” different?

Simply put, you are affected by the atmosphere of the planetary body while you are on the freighter, in addition to the cold hazard of the freighter itself. The derelict is not considered to be “indoors”.

This means you can be affected by a hazardous atmosphere, and in particular by storms. It is, for example, possible to have both hot and cold hazard protection active at the same time.

It is both too hot and too cold.

Interestingly enough, activating one of the portable heaters on the derelict also protects you from the planetary body’s atmosphere.

Need protection from a superheated atmosphere? Turn on the heater!

What else is glitchy?

When you enter the freighter, the docking bay door control gives you the name of the system freighter, not the name of the GLO freighter.

MV Butcher of Iderag with DOcking Bay Door Control by the MS Utashi VII

Last, there are some visual glitches as you enter and leave. The side and back walls of the derelict may clip in and out, showing you the atmosphere. I haven’t had the interior glitch, however, so they are safe to run.

What else do you know?

Not much! I’ve only run a dozen different freighters, so it’s too early to draw many conclusions. And, I’ve not gotten them to work in a planet’s atmosphere. Maybe someone else will figure out another way to get them to spawn reliably.

Enjoy!

Really like this game

To set the stage – I was one of those people that brought No Man’s Sky day-1, and absolutely hated it.

I was heavily into Destiny at the time (D1, year-1 vet), so NMS didn’t really gel with me, it was buggy, there was very little information on what to do, and seemed practically no point in the game apart from wandering around aimlessly (from what I could tell with my limited initial assessment).

So, a couple weeks ago I gave it another try. Whilst I don’t know if I’m viewing the game with a different mindset, or whether Hello Games have added so much and tweaked so much that this current iteration is unrecognisable from the initial release, but what I do know is that I’m having a heck of a blast with it.

I like resource gathering and base building, and whilst games like Fallout 4 and Starfield are OK, NMS appears to be leagues better and the systems far deeper. So much seems to be thought out before hand, which is a nice change when you are used to Bethesda games.

I’ve also found that this is a game that it is easy to get lost in. I’m 75+ hours into this playthrough, and I’m only about to start the last Artemis mission, as I keep getting distracted with other interesting things to do. As a “new” player it is amazing how much there is to do. Having just got my first freighter I’m tempted to get into frigate missions as the concept of building up your fleet looks really interesting, but that will probably have to wait as there is so much I want to do first, including finding a better freighter, grinding out the frigate mods needed to fully equip it, and not least actually hiring some frigates.

So much to do, so little time.

Happy days.

How did I paint my stone stairs RED?

How did I paint my stone stairs RED?

I was messing around with light boxes and colouring them red. Next I built some stairs and as you can see I made them red as well but I can’t duplicate this. Can anyone tell me how I was able to do this? The regular stone colours are drab and I would love to be able to get an entire stone building in some of the colours available to other items like I did here.
