NMS HOT POST 2023/08/18

People handing out save-edited stuff at the Anomaly can really ruin the game.

Earlier this week, someone handed me 30 salvaged frigate modules at the Anomaly. I was grateful at the time, but even then, I felt weird about it. Now what reason do I have to go out of my way to do crashed freighters or derelict freighters? But hey, whatever, now I can get my freighter into green and blue systems without having to grind those modules for ages first, I suppose.

Then yesterday, some guy randomly handed somebody else at the Anomaly 30 cargo bulkheads. I was immediately wary and honestly hoping he wouldn't start handing me things. Then he handed me 30 cargo bulkheads, without me saying anything, THREE TIMES. 90 cargo bulkheads. Then I saw that same guy handing out a whole BUNCH of stuff to another guy who asked for some cargo bulkheads of his own. Just pile after pile of crazy valuable stuff, hundreds of millions of units worth. One of the things he handed him was a pile of over 1,000 Quicksilver. Handing someone Quicksilver can only be done with fake Quicksilver which has been save-edited into the game as an inventory item. It's just a worthless inventory item with the Quicksilver icon. It's not actually Quicksilver, and you can't use it as such.

This is what made me realize that probably ALL the stuff that guy was handing out is save-edited. This made me realize that probably those 30 salvaged frigate modules the other day were save-edited, and now I feel even scummier about taking and using those. I got rid of all the cargo bulkheads except two because it just felt so much like cheating. And when I looked up the sources for getting cargo bulkheads, I realize that taking those would absolutely ensure I had NO reason to ever do a crashed or derelict freighter again, since those are places to get cargo bulkheads, and I already have much less reason to do them without needing salvaged frigate modules.

If I had taken those, there would be whole huge chunks of the game and content that I would have literally no reason to experience and explore. I don't even know what people's intentions are doing this stuff, but all it does is ruin the game since now I have no reason to earn those things myself. And the ones I did use don't feel earned. It feels like I cheated. And then even when I decided to get rid of them, I have all this pressure on me to make that decision in the first place, and then to decide how to go about it. I don't want to deal with all that. It's one thing to hand out a few valuable or useful things to newer players, but when you bombard them with potentially literally months' worth of grinding that it would take to naturally get those items, you're just taking away any incentive to actually PLAY THE GAME.

I really don't want to sound ungrateful to those who are a bit more reasonable and just give a small bit of help here and there. But unloading massive amounts of crazy valuable stuff onto new players, especially if you save-edited it into the game in the first place, just seems like a crappy thing to do. I can't be alone in thinking this way. In fact when I'm in the Anomaly, I get kinda nervous that someone is going to start handing out massive amounts of stuff like that. Especially when I actually see somebody handing out that kinda stuff, I get nervous that they're going to turn to me next, and then I'll have to deal with all that hassle and those feelings of taking something I didn't earn and ruining my motivation for experiencing different parts of the game.

I shouldn't be getting NERVOUS that somebody is going to hand me a buttload of stuff in the Anomaly every time I go there, man. It makes me just want to avoid going there and interacting with people, but then the multiplayer stuff is normally some of my most favorite parts of this game.

NMS Q&A thread! Ask questions, provide answers or just submit a tip. We hope this helps our valu...

This post will be refreshed every few days. The old post are still available for answering questions in those post.

Below are a few popular questions that we’ve received from our past FAQ thread. As always we ask that everyone be respectful and we welcome everyone’s contribution so have fun!

Q- I’m keen to start a new passive money making pursuit. What are some good ideas or guides post-Waypoint?

A#1-Gold farm, then take that stack and sell it at a terminal (not traders) in systems that sell gold. Sell all your gold to the terminal and crash the economy. Then buy it all back at 80% off discount. You just got free money and keep all the gold. All this takes is an initial investment on a gold farm, then you carry all that gold with you and just sell/buy back when you get to another system that sells gold. With 50 stacks in my ship’s cargo hold, I can make somewhere around 150 million units in each system I do this in.

A#2-Start a Farm, Fusion Igniters or Statis Devices Farm which will increase your profits to 100- 200 mil fairly quickly and you can even send out multiple freighter missions which will help you get aronium, magno-gold, Enriched carbon and more which will increase the profits even more.

A#3-Quickest way I’ve found to make a TON of units: Harvesting Storm Crystals. Find a VERY hot planet that has frequent fire storms. DURING STORMS ONLY – you can see the bright white light from Storm Crystals if you fly around low enough. Fly to them, land, quickly harvest them, get back in your ship and fly to the next before you burn up. Q-Where can I post ships and other cool stuff that I want to share with the public? A-You can always post on this sub and now the NMSGlyphExchange is live! Q-How do I get the Advanced Mining Laser? I don’t have the option to craft one, and the multi-tool upgrade vendor at the space station doesn’t have the blueprint for sale.

A-In order to get it, you have to look for the blueprints in crashed ships or abandoned facilities. You get it from the main story (awakenings) or you can buy it on the anomaly.

Q-What do I actually do in the game? I finished the tutorial, is there anything else beside gathering stuff, building a base and repeat?

A#1-It’s really whatever you want, there’s a base story, (assuming you haven’t completed it already), follow the quest log and you’ll figure it out, but things You’d want to do for end game? You can collect multiple multitools, ships, built a fleet for your freighter, etc.

Q-Is there a planet that is populated by many players, and they built their base close to each others like a city?

A- Yeah its the Galactic Hub Project, Its a place where many people have bases and each day the numbers grow. Please help yourself. There are many factions in NMS that do this, even NMS Pirates Hub.

Q-I’m still pretty early into the game, just making my way to the center of the galaxy, what should I be spending my credits on?

A-Go hang around a outlaw/pirate trading post. Cheapest S-class start at around 8-8.5 million without a trade-in. I recommend Vikeen pirate, as then you have two good and 1 remote chances at high-maneuverability S-class: fighter, solar, exotic.

Crow, whoever you are, bless you.

I was just minding my own business when I noticed a bunch of players sitting down in front of the nexus. I decided to join them since I wasn’t really in much of a rush. To my surprise, someone named Crow sent me items that amounted to a big amount of units. I’m new to the game, so I’ve never held so much cash at any point in time.

I thanked him and went on my way. The next time I came back, I noticed a lone traveller sitting in front of the Nexus. I thought to keep them company because everyone deserves a friend, even if it’s just for a little while. I went AFK to get some water, but when I came back, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was Crow! I knew because there was a string of messages saying that he gave me another generous package.

I’m new, so I don’t really have much yet, and I haven’t had too many MP experiences, but this is a great indicator for me that the people in No Man’s Sky are good.

PSA: Don't choose to transfer your base when claiming a pirate freighter (at least on Switch)

I play on Switch and this might be a Switch-specific bug, but wanted to post a warning to others just in case: I spent 20+ hours over a couple of weeks save-scumming for an S class pirate freighter. After dozens of space battles and a disheartening number of C classes, I finally found an S class. I went up to the captain to claim the ship, elected to transfer the base from my current freighter to my sweet new S class pirate freighter…and the game crashed. Restore point and autosave were from prior to defeating the freighter and it had changed to a C class when I reloaded and tried again.

It was pretty damn devastating…

So I dismantled my current freighter base and as a test I tried claiming the next pirate freighter I encountered (C class…of course), and sure enough I had no problem when I chose to claim the freighter and said “no” to transferring my existing base.

Like I said, maybe it’s only a Switch problem but pretty horrible if you encounter it. Especially since my base isn’t all that special so if I knew the bug existed, I gladly would’ve ditched my existing base.

Importantly in my test I accidentally left a couple materials from dismantling my freighter base in the core freighter storage, so I got an additional warning about the freighter inventory before the base transfer question. So out of paranoia I’m leaving 1 carbon in my freighter inventory so the next time I find an S class, I’ll be replicating the exact scenario where it didn’t crash. But my guess is the inventory warning doesn’t matter.

FWIW I have reported the bug on ZenDesk, not the most critical bug but pretty frustrating for people in my situation.

Has anyone figured out space stations for ship building?

So is there any rhyme or reason to the space stations, or is everyone just hopping from station to station, looking for the right number of Supercharged slots?

I know some people are posting glyphs, but I’m wondering if anyone has figured out any kind of pattern.

Also, FWIW, the refiner exploit works for ship parts… 😜

It IS kind of fun to hunt for parts, though.
