NMS HOT POST 2023/09/7

As the years go by, it has become even more clear to me just how amazing it is that Hello Games managed to create No Man’s Sky with such a small team because many other games that have attempted to pull off what No Man’s Sky did have failed

After the games controversial Launch back in 2016 I do think that a lot of gamers at the time just assumed that the reason No Man's Sky struggled so much at first was because hello games were such a small team that could not possibly deliver on all their many promises. There was also a widespread belief that once the bigger video game studios started making thier own space games it whould show just how out of their depth that hello games really was by taking on such an ambitious project in the first place.

Now after 7 years we can look back and realize that frankly it's kind of a miracle that No Man's Sky. even exist at all because other games that have attempted to do what No Man's Sky did have not worked out so well

For example, Mass effect Andromeda was originally going to be very much like No Man's Sky and yet the developers struggled so much with it that they decided to just abandon the idea in the middle of making the game.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 looks like it also tried to pull off no man sky on smaller scale but even they are having a tough time with the idea and it looks like the game ain't never coming out

Star citizen is more successful compared to the others, but just like Beyond Good and Evil 2 that game still does not even have a release date and Even when it comes to a big triple A game like like Starfiled Todd Howard himself admitted just how difficult it would be to pull off the seamless planet landings that we see in a game like no man sky and that was a big reason why he ultimately decided not to include it in thier game

The reason I bring all this is up is simply to say that what the incredible team at hello games did was not easy at all and even game studios with much bigger teams and bigger budgets have a hard time because it is still insanely hard to make a space exploration game

I love No Man's Sky - but how are there still no gas giants?

The first time i saw a gas giant in the game ‘Outer Worlds’…my jaw just…dropped at the sight of a rainbow Jupiter. Then i felt sad because there is NOTHING in No Man’s Sky as beautiful as that. Not even close. And it makes me upset because i specifically remember Sean promising us gas giants multiple times. So far, Hello Games has done a fantastic job updating the game, but gas giants were the one thing i was excited for the most. I don’t even care if we can’t land on them. I’m only saying this because i want No Man’s Sky to be the best it can be.

No Man's Sky would benefit from an in-game civilization system

There are a number of player formed civilizations in NMS, but the game itself doesn’t have any kind of system for forming and joining civilizations. Given the current state of multiplayer, with most players having access to the same universe, now would be a good time to implement such a system. Not entirely a new concept, but some features might include:

  • The ability to form a civilization and recruit other players. Civ names can appear next to players’ gamertags/usernames that are members of a civilization.
  • A governance system where players can create ranks that have different privileges.
  • Players could create custom flags for their civs.
  • Claiming starsystems and planets as part of a civilization.
  • co-ownership and management of bases, settlements, and freighters.

Now a system like this would probably go hand in hand with a major settlement overhaul, as part of the same or separate update. Settlements could act as the hearts of civilizations as players work together to grow, maintain, and defend settlements across their civs. A settlement update might include:

  • More freedom over where a settlement is established, what players can build in a settlement, the layout of settlement specific buildings, and the number of settlements a player (or civ) can own.
  • Settlement requirements like food, water, hazard protection, life support, power, and housing.
  • Implementing the existing farming, mining, power, and cooking mechanics in the game.
  • The ability to establish trade routes via frigates between settlements and bases. Trade routes may need to be defended against pirates from time to time.
  • Settlement building that serve specific functions and can be damaged or destroyed during sentinel attacks.
  • Set up defenses against sentinel attacks.

What do you guys think? Is this an update you’d like to see at some point? Are there any other features you’d want implemented in a civilization update?

I think there's something I don't understand with the nautilon

So I’m doing the dreams of the depths quest, I built the nautilon and added the scanner thingy, and now I’m supposed to use it to find a sunken freighter

The games tells me to use the quick menu to activate the scanner

But there is no quick menu? Or at least I can’t access it?

What am I supposed to do then? Swim across the whole planet untill the regular scanner finds something?
