I need to talk about the ending of the "Prayers to the Machine" questline

I just finished the “Prayers to the Machine” questline last night and I’d really want to debate some of the more philosophical and theological aspects of this game.

Because boy, does this game run deep.

(Don’t read this post if you just started the game and don’t want spoilers.)

So we know by now that the entire ingame universe of No Man’s Sky is a simulation, run by The Atlas. Some consider the Atlas to be a God. After all, it created the universe and seems to have full control over everything. Except it doesn’t. And the Atlas isn’t a God. It’s an artificial intelligence that might think it’s a God and it seems to be going quite mad because it seems to be sensing its impending death within 16 seconds, minutes, hours or whatever.

Personally, I think this is brilliant and strangely relatable. I personally believe in God, but I struggle with the concept of God as an emotional benevolent entity. I’ve always figured that if God is eternal and loving, He would go mad from the emotional strain. Still, I try.

At the ending of the autophage quest, there were two screens that really caught me in terms of philosophical and theological depths:

(I apologize for the phone-screenshot… screenshotting seems to crash my pc these days…)

When the confrontation with the Atlas culminated into this, I thought: yes, this is it! Information as immortality. One of the core aspects of Reformational philosophy (as I’ve understood it) is that we are known to God: God knows and loves us and this knowledge makes our lives eternal. We cannot be erased, even if we don’t know God.

Another aspect of the Autophage that I really love is how they are fundamental rejects, but return as a sort of saviors and givers of new hope and friendship. There is hope because whatever was destroyed can be rebuild.

I just thought it was really, really awesome that as a player we can give the Atlas hope. Maybe that’s our purpose as humans: wonder, explore, in the deep conviction that there’s always more beauty than we can ever imagine.

A (relatively) new player's take on this expedition

I have about 12 hours on a normal save and have never done an expedition before the current one. I just finished it (took about 12 hours) and here are some takeaways.

The amount of free stuff chucked at you throughout is mind boggling, from an amazing starship to free tech to a free freighter. I didn’t even know solar sails and freighters were a thing before the expedition.

Staying alive isn’t hard. I have been shocked at the number of complaints about permadeath. I went into this knowing sodium, oxygen, and ion batteries are key mats, and to be wary of overusing the jetpack. I never came close to dying beyond the one required time. Even when doing the whispering eggs, which I’d never seen before, and sentinel combat.

I learned more about the game by doing the expedition than playing my normal save.

Overall, it was a fun, educational, and not frustrating experience for a new player that knows little about the game. Again, I’m surprised to see so much backlash. I feel like there are more training wheels on this expedition than in the normal game.

A Portal on Every Planet? Math doesn't check out...

I read somewhere that every planet has a portal on it. According to the advertising and the in-game dialog, there are over 18 quintillion planets in NMS total.

If the portal has 16 glyphs to choose from, and there are 12 glyphs in a portal address, that should be 16^12, which is over 281 trillion different portal addresses. So I read somewhere else there are 256 galaxies, and the portals are only intra-galaxy (cannot portal you to a different galaxy than the source), so if we multiply 281 trillion by 256, we get roughly 72 quadrillion portal addresses spread over the 256 galaxies. That’s 3 orders of magnitude shy of 18 quintillion.

Is some of this information incorrect, or am I missing something else? Or could it be that not every planet has a portal? I would think some of the barren ones might not, since they seem to have no other buildings, but I don’t usually spend much time on them.

I would think it’s not realistically possible for anyone to scour an entire planet manually searching for a portal, so it would be extremely difficult to visually prove that no portal exists on any given planet, but unless some of those numbers are wrong, I would think it has to be that some planets don’t contain portals.

Just feeling extra math-nerdy tonight, and was curious if anyone had any information about the claim that every planet had a portal.

Transferring NMS from PS4 To PS5

I have about 70 hours in NMS on my PS4 and I uploaded my latest progress to my PS5(but when I bought the PS5 version of the game, downloaded it and ran it, my file is not there.) Where is the file and how would I retrieve it on my PS5? I can’t stand the thought of starting from scratch(but I will if I have to.) Some input on this situation would be much appreciated.

Gardening is fun

This is my Stasis farm biologicals, a two minute run down the hall gives me enough to make almost 100 stasis devices at 15.6M units each. Couple that with my collection of S-class mines across 11 galaxies and you’ve got a moneymaking operation. …
