The repeatability of sandboxing: One game got it right, and NMS could do it too

Hello Gammers, HelloGames … oh well.

Don't worry, this is constructive. I have over 500h on Permadeath and countless others in other modes and I am soon restarting all over again, I love this game.

These days I was wondering what made me want to actualy play another "open world survival" game that is so much smaller, and I noticed something. That game has somethings very small, easy to implement, but that ends up creating a strange sense of novelty every time you replay. That game is Subnautica.

You see, in Subnautica you have a small dread of the unknown, of finding something … dangerous. Lurking around. So even when you are an experienced player who literally knows where every dangerous area/creature is, it is still thrilling to get near those areas, to enter and dare the big challenge.

I miss that on NMS. The game has none of that, the most danger you get is tame compared to that. And lets face it, in the vastness of the universe, you are just as likelly to find cute rideable unicorn-bears, as something that will eat you – whole.

So why not do this tiny bit change. Some planets can have something powerful, something sinister, either on the depths of the oceans or the high mountains. And they don't need to be that big, but should be respectable, visible, loud.

The idea is not to put something that will scare users, that will make someone rage quit they lost their progress. The idea is to put something that has fair warning, that tells you "dude, you shouldn't be here, I hope you know what you are doing". And if you are up to it, you don't need rewards, you only need the thrill of slaying that thing, of putting your foot down (because if you add unique rewards to very hard encounters, the more casual players won't really like it a bit).

Something that I miss in Subnautica (and NMS), is the possibility of large creatures to actually damage your base. Sure, 99.99% of people wouldn't build a base nowhere near these dangerous creatures, but what if I wanted? what if I want to dare? Build a base with redudancies and extra layers of protection to stand that sandwork, that winged demon? the treachearous boss abomination?

And same in space. From time to time you should bump into something that will scare you. The random encounters right now are silly, you chuckle and go away, mark down one more encounter you hadn't experienced yet. But what if you encounter something that tells you …. no, not even going to scan it, I'm out of here.

So, a little sense of awe, of dread, not necessarily always leading to death and loss, but to get out of there, or maybe, let's face this thing!

And its not even hard to do it. Get some big assets, put huge HP, some good damage (but not one-hit kill), and some rules on where it can spawn (planet type, star system type). Maybe even just tweak the already existing random encounters, and then add some 5 new mobs that could even look the same everywhere, but for that reason … you know what it is, and its time to run.

An idea for the future of No Man's Sky

Hello there

I love No Man’s Sky, and I think it’s incredibly rich in content. I’m just over 300 hours into the game and have completed all the challenges/accomplishments. However, I still want to play it, but every time I do, my gaming sessions come to a halt rather quickly, due to a lack of objectives.

That’s why I’ve had this idea in my head for a while, where No Man’s Sky could make its universe more lively and dynamic by creating more indirect interaction between players.

Let me explain: my idea is simply to create an in-game Guild system to bring communities together under a single banner.

Then, a guild would have to be able to conquer a star system, by destroying specific targets on the ground or in space. By default, these systems would be defended by the npc and then by the conquering guild.

These defenses could be strengthened/improved by the guild players’ investment of resources/money.

There could be a guild experience level per player, with guild rewards (similar to current community rewards).

I know that No Man’s Sky is not a PvP / war game. However, Hello Games continues to develop and improve combat and space battles. What’s more, it wouldn’t be direct frontal PvP, but more indirect, a bit like Ogame.

And the No Man’s Sky universe is vast enough to be enjoyed outside any guild-controlled zone.

I’d be curious to see how many systems a guild would be able to conquer.

I wonder if many of you would appreciate this feature in the game?

What items should you carry with you at all times in early/middle game?

New to the game and I’m still struggling to understand what items and materials I should keep with me all the time to be able to face any situation and build almost all I need for exploring. I have 50+ hours to the game and my main items in inventory right now are Oxygen, Sodium, Carbon, Chromatic Metal, Life-Support Gel and then Batteries and Tritium in the Ship.

Does the game has some depth after all those updates ?

Hi, I played nms on release, it was okay at first but quickly become really boring, the gameplay loop was really monotonous, the exploration was stale rather quickly, combat was shit, lore/story was inexistant, piloting was bad because you felt like your were on rail and there was nothing to do on space, planet were mono-biome with repetitive terrain, etc…

I played a couple hours then the update with the pets was released, it felt better but still a bit shallow (haven’t gone really far tho).

I’m now interested by the game on switch (which has no multiplayer and no settlements), and I’d like to know if some of the game subsystems gained some substantial depth, if the combat are now interesting (and has quests or thing like that that push you to combat), if the story/Lora has more importance, if the exploration feel less meaningless (like the random 2rooms outpost that wasn’t randomly placed there, etc..), etc… I’m not interested by the base-bulding aspect of the game tho.

Looking to join a Civilization

Hi, I’m trying to find the right civilized space community and I’m struggling to find one with all the multitudes of different factions, alliances, etc.

My main obsession with the game is actually crafting and industrial mining (using extractors), and I already have a ginormous collection of bases myself that allow me, well, to have more or less infinite money and stuff in single player mode. I would also enjoy any type of online socializing and base-building. Any ideas? I’ve tried a few colonies and communities, but I haven’t really found myself in any of them, yet.

Many thanks and clear skies,

SP
