Seven Habits of Highly Effective Permadeath

Boring background: I've been playing since the Origins update, with nearly 3K+ hours spread over multiple saves, all Normal Mode. With every badge unlocked bar two – Take a Deep Breath and To Live Forever – I decided a couple weeks ago it was time to take the Permadeath Plunge.

Yes, I know about spamming a portal to get to the center of the Euclid tootsie-pop. But my interest was in playing through — the phases of the tutorial narrative are, after all, pretty much a blueprint for expeditions, Expedition Zero if you will. Follow it to get everything you need, particularly if (like I am) you plan on continuing your save. I had to croak a couple times to get the hang of it (a long career of sending out frigate missions from the safety of my freighter turned me into a space marshmallow) but here's what I learned:

01 – What you've heard is true: Don't underestimate how much damage you can take by falling/jetting from a medium height. Or, a short height. Same with the snapping & whipping plants; if one of those Venus Flytraps hits you twice in succession like they sometimes do, you're toast. Anything pesky in normal mode is deadly in PD. Move slowly and deliberately.

02 – Don't fight. It's not just the ground or plants that will do you in. Everything hurts more. When sentinels come sniffing around, head in another direction. Pirate scans mean it's time to visit the Anomaly. When you see the red paw of a predator coming your way, make like a chicken and bok bok bok.

03 – Hop in your ship, all the time. The hazard protection recharge doesn't just save resources, it can save your save. And to that end: don't be tempted to grab just one more storm crystal. It's always farther back to the ship than you think, even when it's right in front of you.

04 – Inventory management is key. If you've played for a while, you know what's important and what isn't. Don't bother with what isn't; focus on your needs directly ahead. Soon as you find a cold planet, mine a couple of dioxite deposits for charging life support, so you don't have to scrounge for oxygen. Relatedly, load up on uranium so you don't have to craft launch fuel.

05 – Dead or glitched worlds feel like paradises. I was fortunate enough to have an empty moon in my starting system, and made my base there so I didn't have to deal with any kind of toxic environment and could refine in peace. 10/10 would recommend.

06 – Once you make it to the Anomaly, remember: You earned those QS rewards (well, if you did, in another life). And I can confirm: in this playthrough YES I was charged nanites for the Speeder and the Vector. I watched the counter click down. (Ditching the Pillar for the Speeder, with infra-knife and auto-charge launcher, was a no-brainer.)

07 – When it comes to Purging, turns out the game requires 16 jumps … in any direction. You don't have to be moving toward the center, towards an Atlas Station (the Seed mission, which I had intended to ignore, triggered itself concurrently with the Purge), or to grandma's house. According to the way I did it, you can probably just bounce back and forth between two known star systems until Atlas directs you to that final portal (I goofed and backtracked at one point, and still got the glyphs).

It's easy to let your guard down, especially once you're flying. So the main thing is to be mindful, respect the common dangers, and figure out an inventory management system that serves you best. Take your time, enjoy the game, and you're home free.

Thanks, and Happy Travels! Come visit me in Budullangr, where I'm currently working to bring my Radiant Pillar up to S-class!

My take on 4.0

I’m just some random doofus who wants to add his two cents.

I grinded myself into a supergod with upgrades both in my tech and regular inventory using only my cargo and freightor inventory to house my items with two activated indium mines to source me effectively with infinite money. It felt like i had reached a gameplay dead end with nothing more to do. I built absurd things, walked across every kind of world they offer. The whole thing was turning stale for me. Less an adventure and more of a meditative drifter simulator. Still great and profound imo, but just stale.

When i jumped back in, after the update, my entire set up was a disgusting mess both in my suit inventory and my ship inventory as well. After an hour or two of sorting the mess out, i settled on a chosen setup. It was a bummer to have been nerfed, but i also think it was fun hunting for it all anyways. You knew, journey vs destination. That’s just me. If you disagree, that’s fine. I love you anyways.

I switched it from normal difficulty to a survival difficulty and ran some quicksilver missions and once more found myself feeling vulnerable to the elements and it really did breath a fresh sense of life into the game for me. Space battles had stakes again and storms were once again terrifying since i could no longer hide behind 3 layers of hazard protection.

Also nerfing the activated indium was a great move too IMO, because after bankrupting myself on shipspace slots (my goodness those are expensive) i find myself really appreciating once again the currency systems with running trade routes, building circuit boards, being a space pirate, and selling settlement production. I have a deep joy in being a space trader and the update made it feel like a meaningful challange again.

What makes it work so well for me is that they allow me to do it that way. My joy is not everyone else’s joy and it feels to me that they tried to account for that in the difficulty slides.

I get the frustration for the minmax nerfs and i appreciate the expression of frustration. Alot of hours were put into the grind and i get how it feels like a massive stab in the back. However, i doubt HG actually did this in bad faith. I’m sure they’re working on a way to account for it and fix it. No doubt, they see the backlash.

The thing is, I’ve never seen a franchise do something like this before, in the sense that they built a game then spend the next 6 years building heavily unto itself. In a way, it feels like HG is flying blind through a model entirely of their own creation and mistakes can and will be made. In the past they have been made. Outlaws hit players with entirely too many pirate attacks, then they fixed it. Endurance lacked ramps in freighters and they eventually added them in. People wanted space whales. We got space whales. They’re listening, and I’m sure they’ll find a way to make it right.

I see what they tried to do, and they fell on their face for a lot of people, but there’s no doubt in my mind they’ll pick themselves back up and take care of you. I have faith in them.

Desperate please for room scale VR support or a mod to fix it

I jumped into VR yesterday and wow, the game play great. Except for 1 constant frustration while playing; the HUD does not move with your head, so you have to constantly re-align it to see it. If you turn on being able to see your full body (which is a great immersive feature for VR for sure), your head get’s twisted up as well. Why hasn’t this been corrected yet? I remember complaining about this when VR support was first added on my old HTC Vive. Surely this is a quick simple update to fix right? Or a simple mod? It makes on-foot VR annoying to play.

Are there any MOD solutions, or config solutions to this? Anything at all I can do to negate this annoyance? I would really love to spend some extended time in VR as it looks and runs great, but this is kind of a deal breaker for long term play in VR. I’ve finally gotten into this game in flat but I really want this to be another VR game I can spend hours in. Desperate for any solutions here.

Hunting for an S-class freighter is the most frustrating and boring experience in the game. How abou...

Title. I’ve recently gotten back into the game and did a hell of a lot of grinding and building. Made 2 farms to make 400 mil every day, got and upgraded S-class ships and Multitools, upgraded my inventory etc. No matter how long it took, I always made at least a little progress so it was fun and rewarding. Reloading again and again for that tiny % to get that s-class freighter you want feels like being stuck in a nightmare loop. Every time you take minutes to fight the ships or dreadnought only to be met with an ABC class and a disappointed reload, leaving you with nothing to show for the time spent.

We should be able to upgrade freighters or have other ways to work towards the class desired, even if it takes a while to accomplish. At least then you’re working towards something and don’t get denied by RNG cause idk, it’s just not fun. 2 hours of doing this is 2 hours wasted. No other progress. Because the alternative is getting one battle every 3 hours which is absolutely worse.

Found an interesting system

Found an interesting system

I’ve found an interesting system, in my opinion, because I’ve never encountered so much loaded system. It consists of:

  • A black hole;
  • A nice “green” paradise planet with salt and metal fingers;
  • A dissonant planet with pyrite, cobalt, and curious deposits;
  • A second dissonant planet with ammonia and magnesite ferrite;
  • A foaming planet with gold and silver;

Maybe it is not that interesting for those who play alot, but happy to share with you.

Black hole jumping to the centre of the Galaxy - a few things I found last night.

Black hole jumping to the centre of the Galaxy - a few things I found last night.

As the title mentions, I’m currently trying to make my way to the centre of my 2nd galaxy – Hilbert Dimension. I want to do this as I reset the simulation on the main quest and it took me here. Anyway, here are a couple of things I (and maybe you?) have found interesting along the way.

  1. First time I’ve seen this particular anomaly.
  2. My first volcanic eruption.
  3. An unclaimed paradise planet if anyone wants to claim it? (I already have a paradise base in Hilbert, so I did not stop by.)

4+5. This was one of the models outside the multitool upgrade specialist in a space station. Has anyone seen that helmet before? I don’t think I have it, but I think I want it.

Yesterday, I also found my first already discovered system in Hilbert, it contained a black hole so I used it and I came out in another system also discovered by the same person. I didn’t realise black holes had a set path, I thought they were random.

So easy to lose time with this game!!

A bit of an anomaly

My first live volcano

Paradise Planet – up for grabs

What is this helmet?

Where can I get this helmet?
