I don’t relay like the ship building system.

Actually I do. it is an excellent addition to the game.

What I don't like is the placement of parts in your inventory.

It should've been a separate inventory or menu list like with pets or separate placeable box.

You travel around find interesting ships, scrap and fill your list with learned plans and maybe make some.

Like this is just junk clogging your already clogged inventory.
