No Man's Sky Helped Me With Anxiety, Did Not Expect.

No Man's Sky Helped Me With Anxiety, Did Not Expect.

Heads up, a few spoilers in this short story–mostly regarding the Artemis and Atlas questlines. I’ll blur some things out, just to be safe!

I recently moved to the other side of the country (from east coast to west coast US), and since then I’ve been challenged by a kind of anxiety that I hadn’t really experienced prior to the move: not knowing where my “place” really is.

Since arriving here, I haven’t really felt “at home”, despite my apartment being nice and comfortable. I live with my fiancee and our dog, and we generally have a pretty wonderful life together–but I can’t seem to shake this sense of feeling out of place. I sometimes get stuck in these thought loops of feeling like I shouldn’t be here in this new city, that I should be in a more familiar and recognizable place, which can definitely be hard to break out of.

That being said, I’m currently at the “Purge” part of the Artemis/Atlas questline, and I feel like it really helped me zoom out a bit and become more comfortable with the discomfort. Atlas’ “reveal” was pretty shocking, and knowing that I (the player character) had such a limited amount of time to live was a bit intimidating, but the comfort I got from Nada and Polo was so unexpected! I found myself really starting to challenge the “I shouldn’t be here in this unfamiliar place” thought pattern as I approached the end of this questline, and I am just so thankful for the experience. When Nada said something to the effect of “find your own happiness” I had to put my controller down and just kinda reflect for a while. Obviously, really breaking down anxious/harmful thought patterns is going to take more than just completing a video game quest, but I’m surprised and thankful that it helped, even a tiny bit.

Rediscovering this game after bailing on it shortly after launch has been a really wonderful experience, and I just wanted to share some of my thoughts. Thanks for reading, Traveller-friend.

This game's community is surprisingly very wholesome (from a new player)

I usually play more single player games so when I saw starfield is coming out in 3 months I got in a space game mood and decided to try out no man’s sky and the reason I said surprisingly wholesome is because usually the people who play survival games aren’t the friendliest bunch you know what I mean games like dayz or rust you try to meet up with people and they either kill you and shout slurs or grief you or back stab you along the way so anyway while doing the tutorial quests I got into the anomaly for the first time and checked out the place for a bit and this random dude invited me into his group I joined them I told them I was new and they immediately helped me out we did a bunch of stuff together one of them gave me a bunch of shit to sell which I used to buy a new ship and he even showed me how to build a base and even when I asked how to get more blueprints they helped and showed me how to find those buried tech for the salvaged data but anyways my point is props to the NMS community for being so helpful to new players can’t wait to grind further 🔥🔥🔥

OG player hooked... Again!

I remembered being extremely excited when No Man’s Sky was set to release. I preordered the game and was hooked from the get go. I played the heck out of the base version, did pretty much everything you could back then and just sorta moved on to other games as you do.

Fast forward a few years and I recently decided to dive back in again, this time on the PS5 and I’m just blown away by the amount of content this game has received since launch. Back then there wasn’t all that much to do really looking back. I’ve been trying my hand at various activities, freighters, settlements and stuff.

I remembered it being a LOT easier to get credits from mining though lol. I recently had a streak of good luck though. I spent a few hours mining and managed to get about 8 million credits. Came across a system with an S Class Multi-tool Rifle and then I only had 3 million credits left 🤣.

I pulled in to the anomaly last night, left to go cook dinner, came back and saw that someone had given me stuff. After doing some research online I found out that the 5 “Stasis Device” they had given me were worth a fortune! Thanks random person! Yes I was still flying my Radiant Pillar since I hadnt changed ships yet.

A few hours later, I’m system hopping to look for a new ship and I’ll be blown away if an Exotic doesn’t land right in front of me. Wasn’t cheap but now I’ve got an S Class Multi-tool and Ship. Now the grind begins to upgrade everything. I’m going to be playing for a long while I think. See you out in the stars!

P.S How good does Light No Fire look? I’ll be jumping on that when it drops 😀

Really like this game

To set the stage – I was one of those people that brought No Man’s Sky day-1, and absolutely hated it.

I was heavily into Destiny at the time (D1, year-1 vet), so NMS didn’t really gel with me, it was buggy, there was very little information on what to do, and seemed practically no point in the game apart from wandering around aimlessly (from what I could tell with my limited initial assessment).

So, a couple weeks ago I gave it another try. Whilst I don’t know if I’m viewing the game with a different mindset, or whether Hello Games have added so much and tweaked so much that this current iteration is unrecognisable from the initial release, but what I do know is that I’m having a heck of a blast with it.

I like resource gathering and base building, and whilst games like Fallout 4 and Starfield are OK, NMS appears to be leagues better and the systems far deeper. So much seems to be thought out before hand, which is a nice change when you are used to Bethesda games.

I’ve also found that this is a game that it is easy to get lost in. I’m 75+ hours into this playthrough, and I’m only about to start the last Artemis mission, as I keep getting distracted with other interesting things to do. As a “new” player it is amazing how much there is to do. Having just got my first freighter I’m tempted to get into frigate missions as the concept of building up your fleet looks really interesting, but that will probably have to wait as there is so much I want to do first, including finding a better freighter, grinding out the frigate mods needed to fully equip it, and not least actually hiring some frigates.

So much to do, so little time.

Happy days.
