TIL digging holes doesn't save you from a tornado

Started a permadeath run shortly before the latest expedition, restarted it at the weekend. About 12 hours in, I’d landed on an extreme radiation planet, spotted dormant storm crystals and decided to wait for the storm because that’s serious cash for the early game.

“I’ll be fine. I have a radiation-protection upgrade and uranium to fuel it.”

“OK, storm is here and the crystals are just over there, off to get them”

“Hey, there’s more just over the hill. I’ll just run and get them.”

“Time to head back to the ship.”

“Oh. That’s a tornado coming.”

“I’m not going to make it. Time to dig a hole.”

“This is a nice long, deep hole. I should be fine.”

“Why can’t I move?”

“I’m being pulled against the roof of the tunnel.”

“I’m being pulled backwards along the tunnel.”

“I’m being pulled out of the tunnel.”

“Help.”

“I think I’m a long way up in the air now but I can’t see the ground through all the wind and orange dust.”

“I’ve been up here a while now. Better recharge the anti-radiation module.”

“If this keeps up, I’m going to run out of uranium and die of exposure while still up in the air.”

“If this eventually lets me go, I hope I spot the ground before I hit it.”

I did spot the ground in time. But that was intense.

I think my save is dying.

So i have a main save, as I’m sure we all do. It’s nearing 300 hours. I’ve accumulated quite a bit as i love this game to death, it’s my go to chill-out game.

But recently things have begun to…break, and in not insignificant ways.

It started with the chunk errors. Squares of terrain simply unwilling to load, resulting in bottomless pits of nothingness. With no surface to reset to, you fall forever.

They weren’t problematic at first, just the occasional one or two squares that didn’t load in the distance. Then they started to multiply, and occasionally appear nearby over a spot that was previously fine.

Then the crashing started. If there were chunk errors nearby and i tried to take off, crash. If it was the middle of a nexus mission and i tried to get out of my ship too quickly, crash. If i fire my Neutrino cannon. At all. Crash.

My Neutrino cannon is my magic eraser. I point it at something, and that thing just doesn’t any more.

It seems like any time i do something even remotely intensive, the game explodes.

I’m worried this is only gonna get worse. I remember morrowind and I’m getting some really bad vibes from this situation. If there is a memory issue, I really don’t know what I’m gonna do. I cannot start over.

Anyone experiencing similar issues?

I'd really appreciate some kind of "vault" for MTs and ships.

I’m a collector, and I like keeping unique things. I have a couple of expedition ships, as well as the Atlas Staff from the last expedition. The staff and ships are not in my regular use pool of stuff, but getting rid of them appears to mean that I can’t ever get them back. At the expedition rewards vendor, all these things say “previously claimed.” which I’m assuming means they’re one and done. With such a small number of ships and MT’s that we’re able to keep (relative to the massive number of cool looking stuff you can collect.) I feel like a lot of very precious space is getting eaten up by keeping these unique things.

I feel stuck between a rock and hard place. I want to keep the cool looking unique stuff that I don’t think I can get back if I scrap, but I also would like more room.

Even if we can’t keep anything other than the most essential tech on them in “storage” I think it would be great if we had some way to keep more than just 6 MTs and 12 ships. For a game that’s primarily about seeing everything and discovering stuff, we don’t get much in the way of space for the things that matter.
