NMS HOT POST 2023/04/10

Got my 1st Sentinel ship. Kind of looks like I’m flying a 1999 Hummer H1

If you could make No Man's Sky your "perfect" space game. What changes would you like to m...

To preface this, I absolutely adore the game. But like most games we play there’s always personal changes you’d make to it to make it your ideal game. This is what I’d love to see in NMS.

-1. I’d love to see a more realistic representation of the size and distance of space within a star system. When you look at planets in our real-life solar system they show up as nothing more than a speck of light given their distance away. A way you could do this in game is planets show up as little highlighted specks of light in space, you use the scanner in your ship which has an attached hyper-advanced telescope, you zoom in on the planet and then you’re able to see what it actually looks like and scan it’s resources. Then you use your pulse engine and that little speck of light quickly expands to the size of a planet considering you’re moving nearly the speed of light to get there. I feel like this would be very satisfying and immersive giving a real sense of scale.

-2. Asteroid landing and construction. There’s already a billion asteroids in each system, I wish that there were always a few large asteroids floating around that you had the ability to land, walk around and base-build on. It would just add a lot more variety to what people build and come up with.

-3. Space station building and space walks. Though you can build on your Freighter. I wish you could literally create a space station in the vacuum of space just like the ISS or wherever your imagination takes you. Then added with that I think the ability to just float in the endless expanse with nothing but your suit and thrusters to keep you from floating away… Frictionless for eternity.

-4. STARS!!! Seriously like we need the ability to pulse to the star in each system. Obviously you can’t land on it, but it would be a great opportunity to find rare items or do dangerous missions. Think, the star gravity could be a constant threat once you get close enough to it where you’ll need to use your engine boost just to get out of its gravity well, once you get close enough it starts destroying your ships technology and if you get sucked in, well game over.

-5. Gas planets. This kind of ties into the stars, obviously you can’t land on it without dying… By getting imploded by gravity…. This would just add another element of variety to each system and with that the gas planets could still have moons you can land on with a gas giant lighting up the sky. Also there could be another cool way to harvest resources from the gas planet… Maybe a starship gas vacuum-harvester 😂.

-6. Planets with multiple biomes and actual rivers.. This is pretty self explanatory. But yeah correct me if I’m wrong but I have yet to ever witness a planet with actual rivers. It’s always just bodies of water.

-7.(This is more of what Hello Games could just add to a simple update) More RNG assets for star ship parts and animals just to add more unique visual variety to the many ships and animals we see. Sometimes the stuff you see feels very “same-y”.

That’s about all! Forgive me for the novel. I’d love to hear what kind of ideas you guys come up with!

Safe travels.

Hidden things never mentioned in the Tutorial for New Player Guide.

Added “Guide” in title for those that search new player guides.

  • Six biggest for me were:

    • Punch jumping – Sprint then melee then jetpack and you will got mostly forward with your jetpack.
    • You can buy a backpack slot on every station, but also on the anomaly in every system. So when you get to a new system go to that system’s station and buy a exosuit slot, then call in the anomaly in that system, go to the back where the people sell upgrades and blueprints and buy another exosuit slot on the anomaly.
    • When you start the game in survival or Permadeath the ship is directly in front of you. (in case you just keep dying in the beginning which happened to me a lot) so you can just sprint to the ship and jump in and not die from the planet’s hazards.
    • You can buy a recipe from the anomaly for starship that will “recharge” your lift booster with fuel while you are running around on the planet’s surface. In this way you don’t need to make starship fuel anymore and can “call in” your space ship to your location without worry that it ran out of fuel. For me I just scan, run to new thing, dig it up, etc. When I’m full call in ship, sort inventory etc.
    • Ion Battery / Life support Gel. Instead of making these, sell the cobalt you would have used to make Ion Batteries at a station and you can afford to buy these. These are a game changer in the sense that you no longer have to worry about finding sodium etc, when you explore you can just pop a battery. Combined with lift-jets thing above I can run around on the surface until I run out of inventory without worry.
  • Medium refiner recipes that make more of a thing if you add oxygen :

  • You can put silica dust in a refiner and get “glass” you do not need frost wart to get it.

  • You can make most plants in a medium refiner even if you did not find a planet that has that plant, e.g. Dioxite x2 + Oxygen x1 = 1 frost crystal. Just by the dioxite from a space station.

  • The “space fight danger level” is often very wrong. E.g. pirate danger level “severe” or whatever. If you have 1 star ship shield battery or sodium or sodium nitrate you can win most 1v1 or 4v1 fights with just 1 shield recharge.

I'd really appreciate some kind of "vault" for MTs and ships.

I’m a collector, and I like keeping unique things. I have a couple of expedition ships, as well as the Atlas Staff from the last expedition. The staff and ships are not in my regular use pool of stuff, but getting rid of them appears to mean that I can’t ever get them back. At the expedition rewards vendor, all these things say “previously claimed.” which I’m assuming means they’re one and done. With such a small number of ships and MT’s that we’re able to keep (relative to the massive number of cool looking stuff you can collect.) I feel like a lot of very precious space is getting eaten up by keeping these unique things.

I feel stuck between a rock and hard place. I want to keep the cool looking unique stuff that I don’t think I can get back if I scrap, but I also would like more room.

Even if we can’t keep anything other than the most essential tech on them in “storage” I think it would be great if we had some way to keep more than just 6 MTs and 12 ships. For a game that’s primarily about seeing everything and discovering stuff, we don’t get much in the way of space for the things that matter.
