NMS HOT POST 2023/08/6

I know people will hate me for saying this, but allmost all animals in this game are absolutely pointless and mostly ugly.

I know infinite possibilities etc. but what's the point to these animals gameplay wise? Most of them aren't hostile and even if you kill them they don't drop anything super usefull. It only upsets some nearby sentinels which can result in some battles but the creatures themselves don't pose any challange or real threat. Hell even the plant's managed to kill me by surprise since they sometimes blend in with the surrounding, which is more than the animals do. Food wise they aren't as important since food isn't necessary, even in survival mode which is an odd choice.

Also like 90% of these animals are not really aesthetically pleasing. Some of them look goofy and even made me laugh but there was never a "wow I need this thing as a pet" moment. The movements and animal "type" sometimes doesn't even match the environment. Like swimming on land, or bulky cow like creatures with hooves living in the water. It just kills the imersion for me. Most of them are also either gray or a shade of brown, rarely do I find something with vibrand colours. They also get very repetitive.

My most hated animal type is the flying "turd". I have found many great planets I wanted to settle on and then I saw these snakey flying brown turds over the horizon and I immediately left.

My biggest disappointment however are the Sandworms. I didn't know these things where in the game and I encountered my first one on a very eerie infested red planet. I almost shat myself when that thing plowed through the surface next to me. I noped out in hoorror thinking that finally there is something I can be scared of in this game. But later I learned they are just for show. And this made me mad, because I love the concept and the Idea of a giant animal like this. But there is no interaction with it. You can't scan them, they don't take damage, they don't attac you or any structures or make any impact on their surroundings. Like why? What's the point?

The fauna of this game desperatly needs an overhaul in both design and funktionality. I know this comparison is not something people here want to hear, but this game would benifit from a "starbound like" fauna design. Not meaning it should work the same way, but making liveforms more threatening, fit in more with the biomes and give them even more design variety. Animals like massive wooly mamals on frozen planets, or more "rocky" and protective designs on super hot planets. Animals that spit acid and drop materials accordingly. Imagine beeing able to harvest wooly animals and create star silk on your own or something like that.

Permadeath - no starter ship- Cost of ships

I’m 8 hours into a No starter ship permadeath run.

I’m still 4 hours from a distress signal but came across a Planetary Archive and thought all my troubles were over… nope!

The cheapest ship that’s landed in the past hour was 3-4m units and by cleaning out all the local caves I have 1m units

2 questions,

Should I hang around here and hope something with fewer slots lands next time

What’s the best way to make 2m units on a permadeath run? 500 cobalt is getting me 38K

Welcome to the new daily FAQ thread for NMSTG! You can now drop a question, provide answers or just ...

Below are a few popular questions that we’ve received from our past FAQ thread. As always we ask that everyone be respectful and we welcome everyone’s contribution so have fun!

Q- I’m keen to start a new passive money making pursuit. What are some good ideas or guides post-Waypoint?

A#1-Gold farm, then take that stack and sell it at a terminal (not traders) in systems that sell gold. Sell all your gold to the terminal and crash the economy. Then buy it all back at 80% off discount. You just got free money and keep all the gold. All this takes is an initial investment on a gold farm, then you carry all that gold with you and just sell/buy back when you get to another system that sells gold. With 50 stacks in my ship’s cargo hold, I can make somewhere around 150 million units in each system I do this in.

A#2-Start a Farm, Fusion Igniters or Statis Devices Farm which will increase your profits to 100- 200 mil fairly quickly and you can even send out multiple freighter missions which will help you get aronium, magno-gold, Enriched carbon and more which will increase the profits even more.

A#3-Quickest way I’ve found to make a TON of units: Harvesting Storm Crystals. Find a VERY hot planet that has frequent fire storms. DURING STORMS ONLY – you can see the bright white light from Storm Crystals if you fly around low enough. Fly to them, land, quickly harvest them, get back in your ship and fly to the next before you burn up.

Q-How do I get the Advanced Mining Laser? I don’t have the option to craft one, and the multi-tool upgrade vendor at the space station doesn’t have the blueprint for sale.

A-In order to get it, you have to look for the blueprints in crashed ships or abandoned facilities. You get it from the main story (awakenings) or you can buy it on the anomaly.

Q-What do I actually do in the game? I finished the tutorial, is there anything else beside gathering stuff, building a base and repeat?

A#1-It’s really whatever you want, there’s a base story, (assuming you haven’t completed it already), follow the quest log and you’ll figure it out, but things You’d want to do for end game? You can collect multiple multitools, ships, built a fleet for your freighter, etc.

Q-Is there a planet that is populated by many players, and they built their base close to each others like a city?

A- Yeah its the Galactic Hub Project, Its a place where many people have bases and each day the numbers grow. Please help yourself. There are many factions in NMS that do this, even NMS Pirates Hub.

Q-I’m still pretty early into the game, just making my way to the center of the galaxy, what should I be spending my credits on?

A-Go hang around a outlaw/pirate trading post. Cheapest S-class start at around 8-8.5 million without a trade-in. I recommend Vikeen pirate, as then you have two good and 1 remote chances at high-maneuverability S-class: fighter, solar, exotic.

New Ship Perk Suggestions

Long ago, NMS only allowed players to own a single ship, making it a major decision on which ship type a traveler should go after. However, realizing this felt clunky, updates have been made over the years, ship slots increased, new tech modules, and new features added. This was a great call, but it did leave one mark: the distinctions between each ship didn’t matter anymore; Haulers don’t even have the benefit of additional cargo space, since all S-class ships can have the same total number of slots.

I was talking ship perks with someone, and it got me thinking that perhaps it would make sense to introduce new strengths to less used ship types. As I was mulling it over, I realized that some of these changes would have to be pretty potent to stand up to current-day standards — poor Shuttles, their only real signature is that their takeoff price is reduced, made obsolete by the auto-recharge modules. So I decided to spitball a few ideas trying to stay true to the ship’s purpose while taking 2024 NMS in mind, and see if the following suggestions are strong enough to make you think “oh yeah, I’d definitely want to own a [ship type].”

Shuttles:

  1. 25% faster flight speed than others while in-atmosphere.
  2. 100% faster Pulse Drive speed.
  3. Takeoffs and landings are quicker and snappier.

Haulers:

  1. Cargo slots are double-sized, just like Freighters and storage containers.
  2. One storage augmentation slot unlocks two slots when used to unlock cargo slots.
  3. When the Teleport Receiver is installed, Hauler item teleport range is unlimited within the same star system.

Living:

  1. Increased chance of finding Space Encounters while pulsing. Alien Traders completely removed from encounter pool (Frequency 12 > 0). Odds of Rogue Black Hole and Relic Gate events tripled (Frequency 1 > 3).
  2. Eating food while in a ship refuels the ship’s hyper drive, pulse drive, launch thrusters, and damaged shields.

Explorer:

  1. Scanning one planet scans every planet in the system.
  2. Hyperdrive chain jumps. When setting a waypoint on the galactic map, can directly jump to that waypoint as long as the Explorer would have enough fuel to reach there, or up to 5 jumps (aka 5x listed hyperdrive range).

Let me know if these are along the right lines, and whether you’d fly one of these if they had these perks.

Just a Quick Appreciation

While I struggle with anxiety so it is difficult for me to egg myself into the multiplayer scene in the game, I just have to applaud ALL of you guys. This is the most non-toxic gaming community I think I’ve ever seen and I have been a gamer for a goood…

Too Many Low Difficulty Frigate Expeditions

I re-boarded my freighter after a lengthy reconnaissance mission and wanted to send my frigates out.

So, I visit The Navigator, and he gives me the list of expeditions (not Expeditions) and it’s all low star trips, three 2** and two 1*.

Would love to see more 3‘s, as well as any 4* and 5*****, which I’ve never seen. What’s up with that?

That’s all.

Gray, over and out.
