Cartographers Redux Tips


Just finished this expedition. This one can be a real pain to get through. Here's some tips to hopefully help.

  1. This Expedition, more than the first 2 reduxs, is the definition of Do Milestones Out of Order. Seriously, you can do the later milestones early and it will definitely help with the first ones.

  2. You're on a hot planet, but you start with a heat shield. Aside from the normal basic stuff you always need for these, mine some Phosphorus when you get the opportunity; it's probably the best option for recharging the heat shield. One patch/vein should be enough to get through the whole expedition.

  3. You will get the Minotaur exocraft in this one. It has a few perks here. A) It protects you from the heat without the need for upgrades or charging. B) It can operate 100% underwater without the need for Oxygen. C) The jump pack gets you around MUCH faster than just you on foot.

  4. You have one milestone that wants you to Chart Waypoints, or something close to that wording. You will get Plotting Charts (the items that tell you where certain buildings are). This milestone is NOT talking about these items. What it wants you to do is hit 4 different "Chart & Save" points that you find by buildings. IMO, it was not very clear this is what it was asking for.

  5. The Climb a Mountain Milestone. Without cheesing it; the best way to get this one is to Track it in the Log (Objective) tab, then climb a "hill". The tracker will tell you how high up you are & the target hight. If you're not high enough, look across the horizon and find a spot higher than you and head for that location. Repeat until you get high enough. You can do this in the Minotaur, it will actually give you a little hight boost.

  6. The Low Altitude Maneuvers: once you FINALLY get the ship airborne, what they want you to do is continually Boost in the lower atmosphere for 15 seconds. I found a decent sized lake near my ship. I skimmed the water and had no issues.

I think that's all of the sticking points. Comment any questions and I'll do my best to help.

Just a PSA to both new players, and to some who may not know already. You can buy two inventory slot...

Basically, starting off can be a bit painful due to low inventory space. And hearing your onboard computer constantly reminding you that there are ‘No free slots in suit inventory’ tends to aggravate somewhat. So to help, make sure to get both inventory slots in every system you visit.

Slot 1: You can buy this from the vendor in the space station. It’s a blue backpack hologram to your right once you exit your ship.

Slot 2: Call in the anomaly and head to the back where the six vending stations are (where you spend salvage data to gain new blueprints). There is another hologram here in the left corner as you walk in.

These will be available in every new system you visit, and the price increases gradually. It’s a great way to stop your onboard computer from bothering you every five minutes.

New Ship Perk Suggestions

Long ago, NMS only allowed players to own a single ship, making it a major decision on which ship type a traveler should go after. However, realizing this felt clunky, updates have been made over the years, ship slots increased, new tech modules, and new features added. This was a great call, but it did leave one mark: the distinctions between each ship didn’t matter anymore; Haulers don’t even have the benefit of additional cargo space, since all S-class ships can have the same total number of slots.

I was talking ship perks with someone, and it got me thinking that perhaps it would make sense to introduce new strengths to less used ship types. As I was mulling it over, I realized that some of these changes would have to be pretty potent to stand up to current-day standards — poor Shuttles, their only real signature is that their takeoff price is reduced, made obsolete by the auto-recharge modules. So I decided to spitball a few ideas trying to stay true to the ship’s purpose while taking 2024 NMS in mind, and see if the following suggestions are strong enough to make you think “oh yeah, I’d definitely want to own a [ship type].”

Shuttles:

  1. 25% faster flight speed than others while in-atmosphere.
  2. 100% faster Pulse Drive speed.
  3. Takeoffs and landings are quicker and snappier.

Haulers:

  1. Cargo slots are double-sized, just like Freighters and storage containers.
  2. One storage augmentation slot unlocks two slots when used to unlock cargo slots.
  3. When the Teleport Receiver is installed, Hauler item teleport range is unlimited within the same star system.

Living:

  1. Increased chance of finding Space Encounters while pulsing. Alien Traders completely removed from encounter pool (Frequency 12 > 0). Odds of Rogue Black Hole and Relic Gate events tripled (Frequency 1 > 3).
  2. Eating food while in a ship refuels the ship’s hyper drive, pulse drive, launch thrusters, and damaged shields.

Explorer:

  1. Scanning one planet scans every planet in the system.
  2. Hyperdrive chain jumps. When setting a waypoint on the galactic map, can directly jump to that waypoint as long as the Explorer would have enough fuel to reach there, or up to 5 jumps (aka 5x listed hyperdrive range).

Let me know if these are along the right lines, and whether you’d fly one of these if they had these perks.
