NMS HOT POST 2021/05/23

I love that I dont HAVE to play

I know title sounds kinda ironic but I mean it. I play a lot other online games and always feel like I have to log in in order to not be left behind, get daily login etc. NMS however is just chill. I can straight up not play for a month and yes I will miss out of the expeditions and dont get the daily quicksilver but what will I loose because of this? A fancy ship or I will get a cosmetic later but its just so relaxing to not having to do something. I hope some get my point and I dont sound entirely like a madman "

You don't realize how much you've accomplished until your save file is gone

So lately when I start my game up, it’s been taking me to the “Start New Game” menu by default. Tonight when I started playing, I thought “you know, I died on my permadeath save a few days ago. Let’s give that another go.”

So I make a new save, make progress, then decide to finish the night out casually. I go to switch to my daughter’s and my shared save (she’s 4 and just likes to fly the ship and help build bases). Turns out the start a new save screen it’s been taking me to this whole time overrights whatever game save you were on last. So I’ve lost my 50 hour save that I share with my daughter.

I’m bummed that we’ve lost all our Elsa castles and whatnot we’ve built, but I’m also sad for all the other stuff I accomplished on that save. It was a lot… and now it’s gone.

This game helped me deal with my debilitating existentialism

This game helped me deal with my debilitating existentialism

TL;DR I have a crippling fear of death and the unknown, but after being contempt with what I did in my playthrough, I let my life support run out and walked around my base until I died my one and only death.

For preface, I’ve always had an extreme fear of death. I fear that because there’s so much in the world to do and see that I’ll miss so much by the time I die, and have been fixated on preserving my life as much as possible while spiraling into existential crises.

I have a tendency to put myself in the shoes of my RPG-style characters, so naturally I acted as if I were my traveler. I made the decisions I would make, both in the story and in my day-to-day exploration. I got really into it because I didn’t die my entire playthrough- so even on normal difficulty, I treated it as if this was permadeath.

Going through the story, you get so much discourse about someone’s purpose and motivations for even existing, The conversations with Atlas specifically. I got so much into the roleplaying, that I couldn’t bring myself to reset the galaxy when prompted-so the only way to progress was to get to the center. I just kept farming and going about my explorations and slowly crept towards the center of the galaxy, doing things in the game I’d always wanted to do like fight off level 5 sentinels in a dogfight.

After I made it, I immediately went back to my base and decided my will had been fulfilled. I had a great playthrough and a great life as a traveler, and I was okay ending things here, so I literally did.

I swam around and burned through my life support on purpose, then sat on the edge watching the horizon with my [REDACTED] planet pet, waiting for my time to come. (pics below) It felt really alleviating, like weight was being taken off my shoulders. However, being in the emote pose wasn’t getting me killed in normal mode, so I started walking around my base for one last time, and even said bye to my Specialists as well. A superheated rainstorm came by, so I let that finish me off while looking at my ship. After the death quote, I alt+f4’d before it went away.

I can’t say I no longer fear death, but I genuinely believe this game taught me that your life is what you make it. I know a lot of hardcore players would scream about the all the other galaxies to visit and that I had to collect one of each ship type and max out everything, but scouring the Euclid galaxy with my trusty B-class T3 Fighter was enough to make me feel happy with the time I put into this game.

I hope what you all get from No Man’s Sky makes you contempt and happy as well.

Would Anyone Else Be Down For Crashed Frigate Exploration?

Would Anyone Else Be Down For Crashed Frigate Exploration?

So, Frigates, right?

Most of us have probably not been inside one since we stopped having to repair them, and repairing them wasn’t a lot of fun — just walking around an empty ship until you reach the thing, feed it materials, ship is fixed. It’s incredibly dull, and the moment we all discovered how to prevent ships from taking damage, most of us never wanted to set foot on a frigate again.

Yet the ships themselves are quite interesting. Bridges, ladders, engine rooms, cannons, multiple floors, they have a lot of parts on them, and they’re actually quite nice to look at, they’re just hopelessly empty with nothing to do or interact with on them. The engine rooms alone are pretty badass (and I wish we could jump out of them, but there’s an invisible wall).

Turning them into an activity might be fun though. If you could find crashed frigates, it would be an excuse to utilize these cool ship designs in a way that we might actually appreciate them. Add an enemy or two in them, a malfunctioning Sentinel that goes “boo” when you try to loot a crate, keep us on our toes.

Besides minor rewards like nanites and parts that can sell for units, I would also like to propose two more interesting rewards: once you “finish” the damaged frigate exploration, you would gain either the ability to repair it and add it to your fleet, or to salvage a usable part from it. The salvaged part could be used to modify one of your existing frigates, replacing one of its qualities — so if one of your fleet’s Exploration ships has “Malfunctioning Shield Generators” for -2 combat, maybe you can use a part you salvaged off a crashed Frigate to turn that into “Radar Array” for +4 exploration, letting you keep a ship that you might otherwise have dismissed.
