Freighter Base Builders: Don’t sleep on touring system freighter bases for ideas!

Take some time to tour your current batch of star system's freighters. Fly around, dock with them, and check out their "bases" – there are some really unique ideas in play for the procedurally-generated layouts. I found one last night that totally inspired me. I was actually kind of shocked. Way at the back of one of these bases I found a solitary ladder. It went up several floors, and ended in a single room with doors on all four sides. Outside? A massive exterior area, with walkways that let you look down through the windows into the freighter's main bridge. It was really amazing.

I've also found NipNip grow rooms, and complete kitchen areas, with multiple cooking stations you can, um, "raid" for rare cooking ingredients.

This has now become one of my favorite things to do, usually right before I leave a star system for good, for the most part. Some really cool stuff lurking in NMS now in the distant, hidden places we kind of take for granted (system freighters).

I really want to love this game, but I don't know what to work towards.

I’m the kind of player who has no love for Minecraft, but absolutely loved Terraria. I thought the former was too ugly but most of all too focused on building stuff for the sake of it. On the other hand, everything you did in Terraria could be (or was, in my case) in preparation of an ulterior goal, like a dangerous expedition into a new area filled with treasure or a harder boss fight. Since I wanted that treasure and I wanted to kill those bosses, they were great, concrete goals to work towards.

With that in mind, about once a year or so I’ll log in to NMS to see what the updates have to offer, hoping to latch on to it and starting a new file to ease myself back into the controls and systems. But every time, as soon as I get past the “survival” part of the game, it feels as though the game just expects you to build/explore/fight/trade for the sake of it with no ulterior goal to play towards, and this kills my motivation to play.

Am I missing something? Is there a concrete goal I could aim for? I already reached the center of the galaxy back around launch, maybe they added some new reward for that since?

anyone else prefer first person over third person?

ive begun to use first person a lot more. i think its a lot more immersive and atmospheric, and it also makes building a lot less of a headache (of course i use the free camera but sometimes i like to not use it)

i think it also adds another part to the survival element, as it really feels more like you’re the one surviving, instead of just controlling someone else whos surviving.
