New player really struggling, I want to love this game... but the combat is sapping the fun out of i...

This is not a rant, it’s more of an “I need advice because this…”.
I’m really enjoying exploring but every time I’m attacked by anything now, I just can’t be bothered, it’s not fun, I just stop the ship and immediately transfer everything out of the ship inventory into my suit so I don’t lose it and then wait for the inevitable.

It pains me to do this because I like games to be challenging, I don’t want things handed to me on a plate, I always set games to the hardest difficulty as I did with NMS except for perma death, but I’ve gradually had to reduce the combat difficulty setting and I’ve now got it set to one up from the easiest setting, yet I’m still being absolutely rinsed!
It’s bad enough that it feels like I must be doing something wrong or missing something obvious.

I’m not expecting to conquer the universe after just 12 hours of playing but so far I’m terrified to get into my ship and go anywhere near the clouds because every time I try to go anywhere, I immediately get scanned, of which there doesn’t seem to be any escape from as the scan only takes about 3 seconds. Then a bunch of ships instantly spawn on me that seem to be able to move and turn 10 times faster than I can, so I just end up spinning in circles with an alarm screaming “Shields are down, shields are down”.
And then as soon as my shields are dead I don’t have the materials to repair them, so I need to leave the planet to find the materials to repair the shields but I can’t even leave the atmosphere without being attacked.
I can’t outrun them, I can’t maneuver away from them, and my first encounter destroyed my shields so with no shield I can’t even take down 1 of them let alone 5, and the materials I need are apparently not on this planet.

I’m playing on PC but I use a controller as soon as I get in a ship, I discovered the auto-lock target system which definitely helps as the enemy ships seem to be able to move and turn 10 times faster than I can so I have no chance of doing it manually.
But I still seem to just end up spinning round in circles trying to catch them, and by the time I’ve managed to put a few shots on them, I’m already dead because I can’t repair my shields.

So I figure I must be doing something wrong or missing something.

  • Are you supposed to stay on the spawn planet for a long time? Do you eventually discover something, like an upgrade that helps you get off the planet?
There doesn’t seem to be any missions to do now, the game is telling me to go off planet and head to the stars but I can barely get out of the atmosphere.
  • Maybe I’m using the auto-targeting system wrong, are you supposed to basically sit still in the ship and let the target system do its thing or should you continue to boost and try to maneuver manually as well, am I fighting against it if I’m also trying to maneuver?
  • And in general, I know it might be difficult but without any major spoilers, any hints or clues to what might help me get through the beginning of the game so I can then progress on to learn and improve over time?

My thoughts as a new player

After completely ignoring this game since launch I finally decided to give it a shot starting a week ago, and I’ve been playing it nonstop all week.

I love sand box exploration games, space, sci-fi, and customization. Although there is somewhat shallowness in certain aspects, this game hits all of those fairly well and the story and mystery is a nice cherry on top. Going from system to system, planet to planet… It can get a little repetitive. But repetition isn’t bad. Repetition is normal. Every game is repetitive. I kind of see this game like Warframe but better and way less grindy and way more freedom. This is probably the first “casual” game that I’ve seriously gotten into besides Minecraft and it’s refreshing to say the least.

I’m wondering how this game has or will effect the production of other games and how far they will go in the future because to me this game seems like the tip of the iceberg when it comes to procedural generation. I can only imagine what’s in store for the future of exploratory gaming and other implementation of this kind of design.

There is definitely one thing that is missing from this game, and I guess I’m beating a dead horse here but this game needs ship customization or even creation. It could be an extra thing to seek out materials for, more blueprints, recipes and an addition to the market. Customization is simple. And if you don’t want it then you could just flat out ignore the aspect. Purely aesthetic. It sure would be a great community enhancement for personalization.

I guess I'm a ship hunter now.

As stated in a post earlier this week, I play NMS cyclically. A year on, 6 months to a year off…

I just hopper back in and I LOVE some of the changes and updates since I last played.

Particularly, I love that I can have sentinel ships to match my sentinel freighter. I find the Interceptor class ship so awesome that, after I found one I loved enough to make my main ship, I still just enjoy finding them to see the cool combos out there.

So, I suppose my new main activiy is finding interceptor ships and posting them on NMSGE.

Does anyone have tips for finding these faster?

I’ve been warping to dissonant systems, using the polyphonic core, and hoping to find Autophage camps with locators. However, tonight I’ve been to a dozen Autophage signals and they’re all exosuit pods or regional waypoints.

Is it just luck of the draw, or is there a way to find camps with ship locators specifically?

Motivation after a certain point in the story was suddenly gone. Am I the only one? SPOILER for the ...

Am I the only one who lost all motivation to explore when I reached the point in the story where you realise that all you see is just supposed to be simulated and not real?

It’s not even the repeating assets on animals and plants. I had specific things in mind I wanted to do before that happened. But after that point all the things I wanted to do lost their appeal. It was suddenly, right after I reached that point. I felt a strange sense of meaninglessness when I thought about continuing to explore the universe. It lost all immersion for me because it is just a program in canon.

I played for about 2 months frequently. It was one of my favourite games ever but right then I suddenly realised it is a huge waste of time to continue because it is just pixels in canon. All motivation was suddenly gone. I’ve never experienced that before and it makes me sad because I loved this game. But now when I log in I just see pixels. I cannot immerse myself in the world anymore.
