You don't realize how much you've accomplished until your save file is gone

So lately when I start my game up, it’s been taking me to the “Start New Game” menu by default. Tonight when I started playing, I thought “you know, I died on my permadeath save a few days ago. Let’s give that another go.”

So I make a new save, make progress, then decide to finish the night out casually. I go to switch to my daughter’s and my shared save (she’s 4 and just likes to fly the ship and help build bases). Turns out the start a new save screen it’s been taking me to this whole time overrights whatever game save you were on last. So I’ve lost my 50 hour save that I share with my daughter.

I’m bummed that we’ve lost all our Elsa castles and whatnot we’ve built, but I’m also sad for all the other stuff I accomplished on that save. It was a lot… and now it’s gone.

40 hours in ... and I still haven't left my starting planet!

40 hours in ... and I still haven't left my starting planet!

and I swear that this planet doesn’t want me to leave …

First, it’s gorgeous, this is literally my first ever NMS screenshot, 5 minutes in:

https://preview.redd.it/xjuv470x9qw81.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4ac05c9cc6bea166d15fa51e72a85f9d87375b81

Then, it’s a billion units planet. it’s got thousands of caves and each one is full of Albumen Peas (that sell for 5k each), this was my inventory as was preparing to leave for the first time:

https://preview.redd.it/cp11i2kcaqw81.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b17c95362ed4bf134dc04d236d9d8964a928b900

But then it kept giving me even more valuable resources like chlorine and glowing crystals and, each time I’m about to leave, I find something even more valuable/interesting.

In the first few hours I found:

  • 2 crashed ships (1 b class explorer, 1 b class solar)
  • 1 crashed freighter
  • Lots of monoliths
  • a Portal (which I haven’t explored yet)
  • 3 Sentinel pillars
  • 3 drop pods

But that’s not all, as I was finally about to leave for good, I got a quest to raid 5 resource depots …. as I was on my way to my latest sentinel pillar!

So I deactivated the sentinels and got into a frenzy of roaming the world frantically to raid everything that I could find that would otherwise have been protected by sentinels … so in the span of an hour I found:

  • 6 resource depots
  • 2 more crashed freighters
  • 1 more crashed ship
  • 2 more drop pods

I was still in the middle of raiding without sentinels when I ended my last session but now my inventory and 25 slots shuttle are filled with rare minerals (that sells for anything from 25k to 100k a pop) and I went from a meager 65k unit to more than 10 millions … which I’ll probably have to spend on a hauler to get all that loot out there…. that’s if I ever end up leaving the planet.

Still, I’m wondering, are all planets that rich or did I get a super lucky start?

I am absolutely blown away by how good this runs on Switch

I’ve got about 2000 hours between Xbox and PC. I bought the Switch version on launch and it was so-so. I mean I didn’t really expect MUCH in the way of performance.

Must have been one of the recent updates, but holy HELL how did the developers do this!? Between game engine optimization and the raw talent of the HG team, I am beside myself.

I don’t want to reach too deep into my pocket full of dreams but I hope Light No Fire comes to Switch as well. I was literally about to sell my OLED last week until I fired up NMS again.
