Welcome to the new daily FAQ thread for NMSTG! You can now drop a question, provide answers or just ...

Below are a few popular questions that we’ve received from our past FAQ thread. As always we ask that everyone be respectful and we welcome everyone’s contribution so have fun!

Q- I’m keen to start a new passive money making pursuit. What are some good ideas or guides post-Waypoint?

A#1-Gold farm, then take that stack and sell it at a terminal (not traders) in systems that sell gold. Sell all your gold to the terminal and crash the economy. Then buy it all back at 80% off discount. You just got free money and keep all the gold. All this takes is an initial investment on a gold farm, then you carry all that gold with you and just sell/buy back when you get to another system that sells gold. With 50 stacks in my ship’s cargo hold, I can make somewhere around 150 million units in each system I do this in.

A#2-Start a Farm, Fusion Igniters or Statis Devices Farm which will increase your profits to 100- 200 mil fairly quickly and you can even send out multiple freighter missions which will help you get aronium, magno-gold, Enriched carbon and more which will increase the profits even more.

A#3-Quickest way I’ve found to make a TON of units: Harvesting Storm Crystals. Find a VERY hot planet that has frequent fire storms. DURING STORMS ONLY – you can see the bright white light from Storm Crystals if you fly around low enough. Fly to them, land, quickly harvest them, get back in your ship and fly to the next before you burn up.

Q-How do I get the Advanced Mining Laser? I don’t have the option to craft one, and the multi-tool upgrade vendor at the space station doesn’t have the blueprint for sale.

A-In order to get it, you have to look for the blueprints in crashed ships or abandoned facilities. You get it from the main story (awakenings) or you can buy it on the anomaly.

Q-What do I actually do in the game? I finished the tutorial, is there anything else beside gathering stuff, building a base and repeat?

A#1-It’s really whatever you want, there’s a base story, (assuming you haven’t completed it already), follow the quest log and you’ll figure it out, but things You’d want to do for end game? You can collect multiple multitools, ships, built a fleet for your freighter, etc.

Q-Is there a planet that is populated by many players, and they built their base close to each others like a city?

A- Yeah its the Galactic Hub Project, Its a place where many people have bases and each day the numbers grow. Please help yourself. There are many factions in NMS that do this, even NMS Pirates Hub.

Q-I’m still pretty early into the game, just making my way to the center of the galaxy, what should I be spending my credits on?

A-Go hang around a outlaw/pirate trading post. Cheapest S-class start at around 8-8.5 million without a trade-in. I recommend Vikeen pirate, as then you have two good and 1 remote chances at high-maneuverability S-class: fighter, solar, exotic.

To the new players of this game. You are a human being.

You are not a human doing. There are quests, activities, bases to build, travellers to find, units to make, ships to upgrade. But the true beauty if this game is in simply being.

You are the first person ever to land on an undiscovered planet in a universe which is so vast, if every human being on earth played simultaneously, there would still be over two billion planets just for you. Take a few minutes to appreciate its beauty.

There is minimaxing to be done, base parts to be ground, freighters to be designed, but take a moment to stand on one of your frigates’ landing pads and marvel at what Sean hath wrought.

The true value of this game to humanity is its ability to rekindle the sense of wonder at the vastness of nature. Bring this sense of wonder back to the real world.

Safe travels, Interloper.

My No Man's Sky wish list

  1. Multiplayer fleets/freighters. It’d be great if you and whatever friends you were playing with could all summon your freighters into the same system. This would add to the idea that a planet was a home planet for a group

  2. Along the same lines but if I Jump into a system and a freighter battle is happening – let me summon my freighter to defend me and potentially the other freighter

  3. Settlements are a start but let them expand to sprawling cities or where settlements are started allow cities to start to grow out of them.

  4. Race homeworlds- we have 4 races and none of them have a home planet? Do they do all of their construction of the starships and freighters they pilot from other starships and freighters?

  5. Along the same lines again but if a race is the dominant race in a system let them populate the planets in that system. Id love to explore AI citites/settlements populated by Gek.

  6. Remnants left of the old racist geks who just want to destroy everything and take over everything. Now that we have freighter battles you could easily implement this but instead of pirates its the order of the first spawn intent on destroying the other races

  7. Now that we have freighters intent on destroying freighters add orbital bombardment as a possibility for settlement issues

  8. The high conflict systems should feel like high conflict systems whether that means you jump in and fleets are firing on each other or you jump in and all of a sudden fighters just fly overhead and are blasting each other

  9. I know it’s probably never going to happen but ship/freighter building. I understand the ship hunting mechanic is huge in the game but adding an element for it would be pretty cool…especially now that we have been able to build a staff and a mechanical body.

  10. Melee weapons because sometimes you just need to get up close and personal with the enemy or they just get too up close and personal with you. You could make this a sidearm of a multi tool or its own multitool.

  11. Desert planets. We have scorched planets so why not desert?

  12. Multiplayer cities/settlements – allow multiple player bases to be seen and allow multiple players to build cities together to make sprawling cities or even city worlds. I know this could cause rendering issues but there should be a way to do this right?

  13. Space station ownership/construction – I know they added an element to this with the nexus but let us have our own space stations in planets and make money off of products bought/sold in them

  14. Player run economies – I’m not saying the whole economy should be player run but allow players to buy and sell to each other through an exchange of some sort whether that means setting up their own shop or through the previously mentioned constructed space station

I love no mans sky as a game and I will continue to play it but I think adding some of these elements will make the game more immersive

Please explain Voltaic Staff Spawning in 2024.

I’ve been researching staff colors and classes, but it seems a lot of the information I’m finding may be outdated, or I’m just not understanding it correctly. I’ve read that the staff head determines the build, but if I mark a staff terminal for future use, IE. I want to come back when I free up inventory space, I can’t seem to build the same staff again.

Here’s my scenario. I was exploring autophage camps, and found a particular staff color combo I liked. I dropped a save beacon, jumped up to the Anomaly to disassemble an A class MT I wanted to break down rather than exchange away. I then returned to the camp to claim my shiny new staff, but I can’t recreate the build!

In actual fact, this camp had two staff builds I wanted. One was color specific, and the other had a supercharged slot layout I wanted. I cannot recreate either.

For the record, I play on GOG. Do the staff builds vary from planet to planet like regular multi tool cabinets do?

Setting Up Frigate Missions

I honestly don’t know if I’m wasting my time crafting frigate upgrades.

I select frigates that match the mission type, making sure to have a 5-star rating. Most of my ships are S-class now. I add 3 frigate upgrades to each mission (also matching them to the mission type). I have several freighter upgrades that help with various things.

I genuinely don’t know if I’m getting better returns by including the frigate upgrades or not. I left them off yesterday and I actually got more stuff.

I just wonder what’s the best way to maximize the success of frigate missions.
