NMS HOT POST 2023/10/19

Starfield Drove Me Back Into The Arms of NMS.

I was a launch-day owner of both NMS and Starfield. I had played hundreds of hours of NMS, over the first few years of its existence, then an abrupt restart or two, then abandoned it.

Fast forward to last Sept, and the launch of Starfield. There were 100 reasons for me to be excited, but for me it always comes down to encounters in deep space. I knew NMS had continued to update and add new content, but the grind seemed the same, and the lack of any real unique NPC encounters kept me away.

After severe disappointment with the actual deep space encounters in Starfield, I hopped back on the NMS craft, for one last shot.

Holy CRAP did they improve this game! It seems to me that there is always a new, fascinating event happening! New races, improved combat and Multi-tool upgrades.. I think the greatest thing is that there is CONSTANTLY some fascinating new item appearing in my inventory, that truly makes it fun to browse and install. And the custom settings make it so there’s still material hunting, but it doesn’t define the experience. I love that.

Last night, I JUST encountered the Space Anomaly, (1st time this playthrough) and some player ran up and gave me some tech worth 166 million units. What the F*u€£?!? I went from rags to riches in 5 seconds. Why do players do this? Thanks, regardless, to whomever made me wealthy. I can’t wait to see what awaits me under the waves.

Anyway, I think the best way to describe the distinction between the two games is that, if you like to be thrown into a fascinating story, Starfield is a great game. If you like to create your own story, NMS is the ticket.

Should you grind for best forbidden exosuit module / salvaged upgrade components?

Should you grind for best forbidden exosuit module / salvaged upgrade components?

I got this idea after I noticed I’m struggling to get forbidden exosuit module with good set of buffs and high rolls.

https://preview.redd.it/icox1pf5g5mc1.png?width=725&format=png&auto=webp&s=f847830fe9da29195cfacaea1dcdc8e388bd2b33

Here you can see table with possible buffs and min/max range. For me most important buff is fuel efficiency, then shield strength and on 3rd place are both life support tank and core health.
After popping ~300 sentinel exosuit fragments I didn’t get single module with those 4 specific buffs and high fuel efficiency (up to that point max I could get was 9% fuel efficiency + 3 other buffs with pretty high rolls).
At that moment I decided to use NomNom mod, to test drop rates and see how easy or hard it is to
get 30% fuel efficiency + core health (always 33%) + 2 other buffs with high rolls.
I started yesterday, started with 1000 sentinel exosuit fragments, after this I was thinking I was being unlucky so I popped 200 more, took break and popped 1000 more (2200 total).
I also popped 1000 rebuilt exosuit modules which I believe are exact same thing with different name. Why do I think they are the same?
Look at wiki pages :

1)https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Forbidden_Exosuit_Module

2)https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Salvaged_Upgrade_Components

They both have same set of buffs and min/max range, and when dismantled they both drop same components. This makes me think coding behind both of them is the same (this doesn’t mean I am right, I just think I am).
After popping 3200 exosuit modules I had no energy left to post all this info on reddit, so I decided to leave it for tomorrow… Today when I decided to post results I was shocked because all of the stored modules from my inventory disappeared including personal refiner and neural stimulator. Both autosave and restore point were corrupted somehow… And I have no idea how to show you … this is best I could think of.

https://preview.redd.it/bwwttfl6k5mc1.png?width=1919&format=png&auto=webp&s=dce3b859caa6e1f15f0b3b791da6236bcbcffc47

Now its up to you to decide whether you believe me or not. But to have any kind of results I decided to pop today 2000 more rebuilt exosuit modules.
So here are results of my experiment (keep in mind almost all modules from yesterday are lost):
First 1000 sentinel exosuit fragments – best drop was module with all 4 buffs (fuel efficiency 12%, core health, shield strength 33% and life support tank ~104)
200 more sentinel exosuit fragments – best was fuel efficiency 9% with 3 other buffs with good rolls.
Last 1000 sentinel exosuit fragments – at around ~800 (of 1000) I got first 20%+ fuel efficiency

I added numbers manually for easier understanding

https://preview.redd.it/usq3smkwm5mc1.png?width=650&format=png&auto=webp&s=3d63f968cc1c0cff90b8ca4bc0234bcf35eea099

And here are other 2 modules which I think are the best:

https://preview.redd.it/jq8ovp9yn5mc1.png?width=1300&format=png&auto=webp&s=e6a1863e8edf94caf3a923ad8d85cd28d8bee9c1

It was relatively easy (~1:40-50) to get 4 other buffs (other than fuel efficiency) with high rolls, but up till that moment it was impossible to get 30% fuel efficiency + ANY 3 other buffs, best I got was 30% fuel efficiency + 2 other buffs.
First 1000 rebuilt exosuit modules – I finally got 30% fuel efficiency + 3 other buffs, but instead of life support tank I got sprint distance, and roll was low. Roll for shield strength was mid (around 25).

Now results from today’s 2000 rebuilt exosuit modules:
It was kinda easy (~1:70) to get module with 4 buffs (other than fuel efficiency) with high rolls, I got plenty. Examples:

https://preview.redd.it/nq665ijmq5mc1.png?width=1300&format=png&auto=webp&s=25ed867e728ae6aa01f82bea9653dea620b320f5

It was also easy (~1:40) to get 20+ fuel efficiency and 2 other buffs. Examples (ignore warning):

https://preview.redd.it/qrls32ycv5mc1.png?width=1940&format=png&auto=webp&s=0ab0cf0dcf7c213abd70a37d757e176cb3626540

While popping modules I noticed there is some kind of “rubber band effect”, where when you got 4 desired buffs, fuel efficiency will be very low + 3 high roll buffs. Or fuel efficiency low, life support tank low, other 2 high rolls. It feels like you can never get all 4 high rolls.

Most of modules with 4 desired buffs looked like this:

https://preview.redd.it/b9rd59z6w5mc1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=4307e02f84f5000498b40a1ec184399cb57718f2

Sometimes (~1:800) modules with 4 desired buffs look like this:

https://preview.redd.it/jmnjqpj4x5mc1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=d25e884d800d16967e4a92932d91d0b2ac5007ef

It was VERY HARD (~1:105) to find 20+% fuel efficiency with 3 other buffs.

All 19 examples (ignore warning):

https://preview.redd.it/y9st898s46mc1.png?width=2590&format=png&auto=webp&s=f1513712daf83d2ae6a7cfc8d5ef05c66b0058f8

It was EXTREMELY HARD (1:1000) to find 30% fuel efficiency with 3 other buffs. I found only 2 from today’s 2000 modules.

https://preview.redd.it/r4aftpki66mc1.png?width=1300&format=png&auto=webp&s=03b73acd93ca64aa8396d148ecde29f685b9c2c5

Conclusion

After popping 2200 sentinel exosuit fragments I didn’t get SINGLE module with 30% fuel efficiency, and any 3 other buffs. Got only one half decent module with 20+% fuel efficiency.

After popping 3000 rebuilt exosuit modules I got 3 modules with 30% fuel efficiency, and any 3 other buffs.

If you don’t care about fuel efficiency then you should definitely grind for module with 4 buffs with high rolls. But if you are like me – no, I think it’s not worth. Even when you get 20+% fuel efficiency at least one of other 3 buffs is ass.

Possible solutions?
Raising min values would definitely help, which imho will never happen…

Giving players ability to copy 1 of modules with “blank module” which could maybe be obtainable from weekly nexus mission.

New game mechanic – “karma” which you can build up by helping NPCs on planets and in space. The more you help, the more luck you will have, and both amount of buffs, and rolls will be higher.

Depending on how interesting this topic is, I may do something similar with suspicious modules for mining laser and movement.

If you hate yourself, or don’t care about your sanity you can try this yourself. Tell me later what results you got.

Waypoint Inventory Changes are a step Backwards, & Tech Slots are Nerfed

Waypoint Inventory Changes are a step Backwards, & Tech Slots are Nerfed

I have played since launch. Every new save I create, I have the option to trade in the Radiant Pillar for the preorder Horizon Omega ship, Prime Vector.

TL;DR: Having only Inventory + “Cargo” slots was a limitation of a previous iteration of this game. It is a step backwards, and removes a component of the game from the very beginning: The choice to sacrifice an inventory slot for more Tech instead. This change was not fore-warned. There are better ways to balance the game than removing items/features players have spent hours upon hours improving.(I have played since vanilla, the screen-shot is my original ship from vanilla preserved through all the updates).

When NMS launched, the only inventory types available was General. There was no Tech slots. You increased your exosuit through finding Drop Pods and your ships by purchasing a different ship (you only had 1 ship). No matter the type of ship (Hauler, Fighter, Shuttle, etc.) a ship’s max slots was 48. Those were the “S” Class of that time. The screen shot is my 1st 48-slot fighter that I not only liked, but I found as a crashed ship in vanilla NMS. (The 2nd photo is what it looks like now). I have preserved it through every update.

Eventually, an update brought in Technology slots and new ways to increase the slots of your Exosuit and Ships. This was a significant QoL improvement. Even better was the more recent update that added a 3rd inventory slot: Cargo. It was at this point that I thought NMS was in a great place inventory management wise. However, it was still an annoying time investment to manage your inventory across all the sources (Exosuit, Ship, Freighter, Storage, Ships, etc.) I thought that these inventory QoL improvements would fix this aspect.

Instead, we have gone backwards by removing the General inventory type. We have essentially returned to the previous update about 4-5 years ago that had us at General & Tech. But this is a further step backwards because not only that, Tech is now limited to Tech only. Which means, you’ve lost a lot of potential tech space because you cant sacrifice inventory for it anymore, which has been a part of the game since launch.

The main defenses I hear about this new update is: Abandon your main save. Enjoy a new save file! You were in God-mode anyway, this is for game balance!

I have worked HARD to maintain my main save throughout all of these years. I have had to use a Save Editor to preserve my original ship all of these years. I have a lot of memories with my son. This main save is the only journey I care about in NMS. All the ships that I have, the freighter, character appearances, pets, upgrades, etc. have been hand-picked; searched for for many many hours; all bases have been carefully crafted over days and weeks at a time. I do not want to lose this save.

Further, there are better ways to balance difficulty than removing features the players have been using since the beginning of the game, or the earliest updates. Such as: a new mission that upon completion, releases harder sentinels/pirates/creatures to encounter. Make these encounters scale with your upgrades, so that more upgrades help but there is still a challenge. Also, it even hits the playerbase harder when there was no warning for many of these players who were excited for this new update, logged in, and lost upgrades or other items.

There were better ways to balance the game. It is my belief these inventory changes were made to streamline the game and make it easier for the Switch. This new UI scales better on a small portable screen. So, that is why we took a step backwards.

A Recovering Addict's Travels through No Man's Sky (Part 2)

Hello! Wow, that post blew up! I had never imagined that my little journal about my space travels and how they were helping me in life would get so much attention. Writing has always been a challenge for me, despite my love of it, and I am glad that posting my writing here is something that y’all enjoy. To everybody that read or commented on Part 1, thank you so much. Your open ears and your kind words truly mean so much to me, and it has given me a lot of motivation to see this through! (Also, my first silver, ever! Wow – thank you so much!) There’s a lot more that I feel that I could say here, but in the interest of getting to the actual journal part of this post, I’ll just say that I am truly grateful for your support, and I’m incredibly glad that my stories have touched so many people’s lives. Seriously, this community rocks. If you are a new reader, you can find part one here.

Today, I went adventuring. After a brief nap in my ship, I left to investigate the hills around the crash site. After a few minutes of climbing around and taking in the scenery, a radioactive storm suddenly came up on the horizon. With my hazard protection quickly depleting, I looked around frantically for a means of protection, and my eyes quickly settled upon an opening in a nearby hill. As I walked inside, and my hazard protection began to stabilize, I saw a wide cave extending downward in front of me. I had watched a few guides during my break at work today, and quickly crafted an analysis visor. After some quick scanning, I realized that a lot of the rock formations in the cave were made of cobalt! (And other minerals). Knowing that they were valuable from watching a guide, I decided that tonight, I was going to strike it rich.

It was challenging, at first, to mine with such intensity. I knew around how much money I wanted to have from mining, but the tedium of the thing soon began to set in. As many of you know, I am playing this game as a way to help overcome my prior addictions, and once the game became all about mindlessly pointing the mining laser, my mind began to wander. I really did want to power through this feeling, both because I knew that getting a lot of money would really make the early game a lot more fun, and also to prove to myself that I could exercise a modicum of self-control. I turned on some Twitch in the background, and that helped a lot. I actually ended up getting distracted by the stream a bit, and lost track of time, so I ended up mining way past my goal. Whoops! I also found some things called “Vortex Cubes” – not sure what they do, but they look like one of them would make a pretty cool lamp.

After my spelunking had concluded, I decided that it was high time for me to repair my ship. I set out in the direction that the map beacon was indicating, and immediately got distracted by something else. I found a crashed pod on the side of a hill, then from there, I found a tower, waaaay off in the distance. My curiosity was peaked, so I headed out in the direction of the tower, to see what it had to offer. It ended up taking a bit longer to walk there than I had anticipated, but it was really cool to see it grow in the distance. I managed to scale it with the help of my trusty jetpack, and accessed some old logs at the terminal on the top. Unfortunately, it seems that my real-life foreign language skills translate into the game, and I was left staring at letters on the screen. I’ll have to make a note and come back to this later.

Finally, I jumped down and headed over to the beacon that I had found, scanning creatures and plants along the way, and reading facts about them in the pause menu. Apparently, the tentacled creature from yesterday actually doesn’t have any bones, which makes me wonder how it stands up, Truly, nature is beyond human comprehension. I soon arrived at the little settlement, consisting of two tiny houses, right next to each other. I accessed the terminal in one building to win some money via the stock transfer (is this legal?), and found a hermetic seal in the other one. After repairing my pulse engine, I decided to call it a night, as I have an early morning tomorrow. Thank you so much for reading and sticking around! Hopefully this is as enjoyable for you as it is for me – next time, we’re getting off planet, so help me god. I don’t know if I’ll have time to play tomorrow, since I’m gonna go visit some old friends, but we’ll see. Pics below.

Spelunking!

Like the companion cube, but slightly more….. trapezoidal.

Caught this dinosaur sleeping in the sand

Apparently, this is a rock? Wild

Waaaay off in the distance is a crashed pod, near the bottom of the valley

The tower, but from really far away

A half marathon, maybe more

This alien technology looks really cool, holy cow

I want one

Saw a freighter on the way back to my ship. I hear that you can fly one?
