NMS HOT POST 2023/10/20

Am I doing space combat wrong, or is this it?

I've owned this game since release, and have finally gotten into it, sinking 100+ hours in a couple weeks. Loving it – aside from space combat. Having played Elite Dangerous a ton (and I'm sure you're all annoyed hearing the comparisons constantly) and being pretty damn good at combat from smaller agile ships to larger ones, NMS just isn't clicking with me?

I just got my 150 kill milestone, and I'm pretty sure I just hold 'S' and shoot for all of them. I've tried chasing and using different loadouts, but it doesn't matter, because the AI just does some crazy tight turn and flips on me, and their shield are back on in 0.5 seconds. I landed on cyclotron for shields and infraknife for hull because nothing has the RPM or velocity to break shield and do hull damage, but from what I've seen from searches here, pure infraknife is just OP and the way to go.

So am I doing something wrong, is this just it? Hold 'S' and shoot with infraknife? I'm not dogging on this game in any way, I just want to know if there's a way for the space combat to be more fun. I want to be able to chase and stay on a craft's tail while using different weapons, or loop or scissor out of someone chasing me. The AI seems like they can pull crazy maneuvers and then be simultaneously braindead, I either have a 0.25 timeframe to shoot, or they just fly straight.

Wanted to post a funny story.

I spent about 2 hours yesterday looking for “the perfect planet” to build my first real base on. I found it, and it is GORGEOUS. Beautiful glowing floral, rolling hills, those bubble things that are so pretty, etc. I’m extremely happy with it. I then found the settlement using a map, and decided that for roleplaying purposes, I wanted to build my house/base on the hill overlooking the settlement and be its overseer.

I couldn’t apply for overseer because I needed ONE more convergence cube, not a huge deal. I casually browsed google to figure out how to get one.

I pulled the game back up, and IT HAPPENED. In the text feed, I saw that another player whose name I won’t post landed on “my” planet. I start to get frantic. I go to the settlement and the player is looking at the hub, presumably trying to apply as overseer. 18 quintillion planets. 18 QUINTILLION. And someone manages to find the one that I spent half the day preparing. I wave at the player and type in the chat, no response.

I frantically Google how to get another convergence cube. I spend about an hour pulling my hair out with no success, FREAKING OUT because I assume all my hard work will be swept away by some other player that’s probably way more experienced than me. Not a high bar, as I’m pretty new. The entire time I’m frantically searching, the other player’s starship AND frigate loom ominously over my hard-found settlement on “the perfect planet” that i worked so hard to find. I realize I read something wrong in my neurotic, frantic spazzyess and easily get one. I go back to the settlement, apply, and everything is fine.

My heart rate dropped back to non-heart-attach inducing levels. I begun building my beautiful home and managing the settlement. All is right in the world. 18 QUINTILLION planets, and the first time I see another player aside from in the anomaly, they found the ONE planet I care about.

Horrible experience. Tons of anxiety. Racing heart. Questioned life at its core. 11/10, would recommend.

Stuck on radiated water planet.

I’m stuck on a very small island without rocks or dihydrogen around me. I cannot build a portable refiner, can’t make starship launch fuel (that’s why I’m stuck), and there isn’t a nearby island within miles. There are zero rocks underwater, radiation is a big problem, no matter what I do, I cannot find anything for me to get off. And despite uranium supposedly being a huge resource here, there is none in the vicinity.

So uh... The first free freighter....

So uh... The first free freighter....

It’s supposed to be an S-class right? 😅

I still haven’t clicked the claim button because I’m still sort of in shock. I went through the dog fight event, checked out the freighter and was a B-class, but I had to shut off the game. I didn’t realize it didn’t save. When I reverted the save and did it again, the RNG seemed to have blessed me with a S Capital ship after the single accidental save scum.

I haven’t been playing that long and don’t fully understand what I’m looking at as far as quality. How good is she as freighters go?
