NMS Should Dedicate Exclusive Resources to Removing The Build Limit Outright

I know the 20,000 per save, and 3,000 per base is a technical limitation to stop devices that are running weaker hardware from having FPS nightmares – but why.

It's quite possible to optimize an engine to allow such a limitation from not being an issue – whether that be rendering logic, or performance logic, or LOD management. It will take time, but it's quite honestly the most important NMS update I think they could ever do – for one reason alone.

It allows the game to evolve past the size of the NMS development team.

NMS is fairly empty at this point in time, and even the factions that exist have "official planets", but they're not really cities. Imagine heading to a player faction's capital city – and being able to see a city the size of Coruscant. Players have already shown strong indication of collaborative base building, management, etc. as mechanics that they do outside of the game.

Imagine stumbling onto a player settlement, or even starting your own with a couple friends. It would massively change the dynamic of the game. NMS is a game that is considered "a mile wide, but an inch deep", but this sort of player created content generation allows players to create their own depth. Paradise planets become far less consistent, when one of them may have a massive player landmark that they generated for others. A pit stop, or a giant Gekk Statue.

I want that more than diverse planets, or another update that adds content. Still do those things, but open the flood gates for players first. That way we're not stuck waiting for content and putting the NMS team on the clock. The team can generate content in collaboration with the community – indirectly or directly.

I'll close with a personal story. When I started playing this game with a friend of mine, we heard of the Galactic Hub – and their capital planet. At this time, we didn't know about the build limit and having not wanting to ruin the surprise; we didn't look up any photos. It became our goal to journey to what be this massive player created city. Eventually we made it; and it was just…underwhelming. We completely estimated picking up shop and moving to the Galactic Hub in the city; and building and adding to it. Maybe found our own settlement. Unfortunately we had to pad our expectations. The gameplay loop broke for us; what was the point? We saw the planet types, and we mined the resources; but we couldn't exactly build with these resources. Once we hit our limit we were done.

Imagine it was different.

Min/Maxers: I made a worksheet for Forbidden Exosuit Modules

After having a bunch of sentinel pillar bases, I ended up with huge piles of sentinel glass and the resulting Forbidden Exosuit Modules. My recent Exp7 save ended up with a few hundred of them after building and maintaining a popular base.

The problem is, each can have four of six possible attributes. Thinking in my head on deciding which ones to keep started getting twisted. So like a good tool-using monkey, I made a worksheet using Google Docs.

There are groups of three rows so you can evaluate different combinations and it will auto-categorize the different attribute combinations into a “type” so individual comparisons are much easier. In this screenshot, you can see the sample data I’ve put into the worksheet to start you off with. The top is filled with just me making raw entries from a set of the modules in my exosuit. Further below, you can see me take three of those entries to try to make a well-rounded combination.

Make a copy in your own google account and edit it to your heart’s content. Use it in good health and happy travels! If you don’t use it and have read this far, happy travels and good health anyway!

Are you new player looking for some tips to get you started? Are you a veteran player with some advi...

Here’s some of the FAQ suggestions we received in our previous FAQ thread. Keep in mind that these are opinions from some of our valued OP’s and you may agree or disagree with some of these. We just ask that everyone remains respectful when replying to this thread and we look forward to your contribution! NMSTG Mod Team

You can also drop a quick tip!

Tip #1: Always try to be doing multiple things. Pick up the portable refiner so you can refine something from your inventory while exploring and mining.

Tip #2: Avoid multiplayer until unlocking the anomaly, can be stranded if not.

Tip #3: Exotic worlds only have 1 fauna so it’s easy to scan all of them.

Tip #4: Need glyphs? All 16 are on one planet here

Q- “I was on the Anomaly and a bunch of expensive stuff showed up in my inventory. What do I do with it? A:” Congrats! Another player has bestowed you with a gift. Most likely it is an item to sell for some quick and easy cash. Usually the item description will tell you what it is used for.

Q: “Help, I claimed a broken ship and now I can’t find my starter ship! Is it gone forever?” A:” If you merely selected to “claim” the broken ship and not “swap” it, then your old ship is still around. If you left it with launch fuel in the tank, you can summon it with the quick-menu. If it does not have fuel, it can be summoned on the Anomaly (once you unlock it), your freighter (once you acquire one).

Q- “Are crashed ships worth repairing?” A-” Unless it is an exotic, no. Scrap the ship at the space station, sell the items it gives you, and use those units to buy a better, working version of a ship in that system.

Q- “Any advice for new players?” A-“For new players, make sure you read the guide in-game. It’s an excellent beginner’s guide for traveling, learning about the alien races, building, and etc. Take a look over the catalogue of items too. Also, I’d strongly suggest mining a massive amount of carbon, oxygen, and sodium. These three items will be some of your most used and critical items in the game

Immersion ideas

So this game is primarily about exploration and discovery so flying through space and landing on different planets is the core gameplay loop. I had a few suggestions to make that gameplay a little more spicy without overhauling anything.

  1. Animations: Little details like your guy actually climbing into the ship instead of teleporting into it, or fiddling with the ships instrument cluster when you thrust forward or switch weapons, or recharge shields or activate pulse drive etc. Think of the way your hands move in elite.

  2. Immersive menus: The way elite dangerous does them, you look at a panel and interact, that pulls up the specific menu you were looking for. Wanna open the galaxy map? Look at one of your ships many panels and it opens up a holographic galaxy map like the Idroid in MGSV, so it’s still useable, but a tad more immersive. Same thing can be done with hailing messages, or byte beats even switching to third person. I believe the term Is diagetic menus?

  3. Physical ships. So, instead of installing ship mods, or repairing your ship in a menu, you enter a sort of build mode go to the specific part of your ship that needs to be modified or repaired and make your additions. No more dragging things into an inventory slot. Actually get out and attach modules where you want them. They can even have their own hitboxes so they can get damaged and you’d have to fix them through that build mode and not an inventory menu.

I think that’s all I could come up with. What do you guys think? Any other immersive tweaks?

Exosuit Slots

I just found out that you can pick any slot you want to when unlocking slots for your exosuit. The game auto selects a slot for you, but you can choose your own. This includes increasing the slots you can put technology into. Not just the standard inv…

Credits Cap Ideas

Credits Cap Ideas

Are there any new worthwhile ways to get the max credits back down by purchasing items? I’m finally at the cap and find that not being able to sell items is a downer.

I’ve thought of buying ships to scrap but that seems wasteful. I could imagine it as a business loss in game though.

I wish we could donate items to some kind of product slot machine or massive project. I stopped selling my lucrative items a long while ago to postpone this issue.
