NMS HOT POST 2024/01/21

5 years on NMS – just bought Star Citizen so you don’t have to …

So has anybody else tried SC? Have done most things in NMS, so thought I’d try Star Citizen. £45 to get a basic ship. Okay…. So this is what I found

So you have to do a 30 min tutorial. Crashed the ship twice (fair enough), game crashed once (blue screen of death equivalent). Got in a lift, fell through the floor, died. Took off, couldn’t land back, while trying to find out why, game threw me out after 5 mins for lack of activity. 6th time, finished it yay, over 2.25 hours instead of 30 mins, marvellous.

Now the game – a few things you should know

It’s a sim, so don’t expect NMS. It’s been 10 years, $650m and they have 1100 employees and it’s so buggy, error driven, loads of glitches etc etc The idea of having to take off your helmet to drink or eat sounds great to start off with, until you realise how much you have to do that at which point you really wish you didn’t need to. Ditto waking up in your room then having to get up take an elevator, into the lobby, run to the metro station, get on a metro, wait while to gets to the spaceport, get off, run to the screens to call in your spaceship, get in a lift, get to the hanger, turn on the ship, ask for permission to leave, lift, raise landing gear, wait for the doors to open, then you can leave. First time wooooo lovely, 5th time ‘just get ON with it!!!!’ You can only save by going to sleep on your ship or in your home spaceport. So no popping off to make a coffee or eat or “I’ll just pop on for 5 minutes” – this is a game where you need to sit for some time and plan when you are going to take a break/log out It’s very very pretty if you have a PC that can run it at full graphics quality but even then you can get some strange effects and glitches If you have dodgy internet it’s going to be a problem, throws you out if there is a problem. Would report on the missions but I haven’t had the game not crash for long enough to finish one. Nice community – was having an issue to I asked, got loads of helpful responses and then someone gifted me a load of credits to give me a good start. Then I got the email saying we have some deals on ships – had a look – £200 ???? No I don’t think so …….. Oh and it resets frequently so you are back where you started And no VR (NMS should be free on every VR headset! I’ve got 250 hours on the original Rift)

I’m am going to stop there, but ultimately if you want better graphics consider it, but if you want a reliable gaming experience stick with NMS.

Selling spaceship

Hi everyone! I’m new to the game and I’m trying to understand how to farm units. Is it a good idea to search destroyed spaceships, fix the engine and scrap them to the nearest space base? I’m currently still using the starter spaceship, but I have anot…

This game became so much more enjoyable once I stopped trying to achieve efficiency above all else

A bit of a vague title, but the truth nonetheless. I got in to No Man’s Sky somewhat late; a couple of expansions dropped, the tide already turned. No Man’s Sky was seen as a decent game, lots was achieved after launch.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun! The first couple of hours were mesmerizing, and I was excited to see what was to come. Fast forward about 50-60 hours, and I was already kind of done with the game. I was earning millions of units with an Activated Indium farm, something that was recommended to me by the many YouTube ‘guide’ videos surrounding this game. I had reloaded a Freighter battle almost 50 times and achieved a Capital S-Class Freighter. I had a massive farm that I used for nanites. I was maxing out my inventory and I finished building somewhat of a base.

Now what? That was the question I had, and it never really went away. Somehow I felt as if I didn’t really ‘complete’ the game, but I also no longer had a goal to work towards. I was earning an absurd amount of units, with nothing to really spend it on. I no longer had any motivation to engage in the vast majority of the systems the game had laid out, because why would I? The rewards gained from exploration were not worth it, I wouldn’t gain anything from it.

I briefly played on both a hardcore and a permadeath save, but after getting the associated achievements, I realized that the changes these game modes provided were not the changes I was looking for. If anything, they seemed detrimental somehow; on top of not having a goal once I set up a few farms somewhere, I now also had to fight a limited inventory system for naught but a level of tedium. If this was No Man’s Sky but difficult, I realized that I did not desire ‘difficulty’ in this game.

I stopped having fun, so I stopped playing.

Then, some time later, I realized that I messed up. I realized that No Man’s Sky, for all of its faults, is not meant to be min/maxed, at least, not for me. I hopped into the game again, determined to go against what I normally do in games like these. This time, I did not rush any sort of farm for mass units and nanites. I did not hop around systems to find the perfect S-Class Freighter. I did not look up any ship catalogues, or teleporter coordinates for valuable exotics or multi-tools. I even started roleplaying my traveler a little bit.

Man, what a world of difference. Suddenly, I find myself having something to work towards constantly. No longer do I skip over 90% of the content in the game because it’s ‘not valuable enough’. I get excited when I find a cool treasure that’s worth a lot of units, or when I find a crashed freighter somewhere. It’s fun to scour planets and systems alike for valuable targets, resources, and settlements.

This might sound totally obvious to a lot of you, but I can’t begin to tell you the epiphany I had when I started playing the game like this. This is what No Man’s Sky is meant to be. It’s not a space economy simulator, it’s a space exploration game. And though that is apparent everywhere in the game, it somehow took me over a year to realize that.

So to all of you who got bored with the game due to a lack of goals, or because making money/nanites etc. is ‘too easy’, try a different approach. Maybe you shouldn’t go for an Activated Indium farm. Maybe it’s best to delete that generous gift from some player in the Anomaly that’s worth millions upon millions. I’ve learned that when I try to game No Man’s Sky, I simply end up gaming myself out of tens, if not hundreds of hours of fun.

See you Space Cowboys…

Your worst planets

Your worst planets

We’ve all seen planets with crazy storms, or planets that are devoid of life, or ones with aggressive sentinels that shoot on sight. These are not that unusual. But every now and then, a planet pops up that is just so noxious that it gets permanently burned into your mind. These are the zero-star-rating planets that suck the joy out of the rest of the solar system.

Mine came many, many years ago when the game was first released. It was a beautiful garden planet teeming with life according to the scanners, almost no sentinels, and the first I found with floating islands. So I landed, got out of my ship…and died so fast I didn’t even have time to react.

I didn’t know it at first, but I was hit from behind and the sides by multiple predatory crabs and crab-mantises. And then I respawned, and died again, almost as fast.

I don’t even remember how I lived through the second respawning; I must have jumped in my ship fast enough to avoid the instadeath. And that’s when I saw them: dozens, literally dozens, of crabs and crab-mantises, all with super speed (I don’t think super speed crabs and crab-mantis predators are a thing anymore, or at least, I’ve not seen any in the last couple of updates).

I flew around for a bit, trying to find a safe landing spot, but everywhere I touched down there were predators around my ship and in the distance. Until I found a building by sheer luck, and was able to jump out and run for it. I turned around just inside the entrance, where you are far enough in to be safe from attack, but not far enough to disable your scanner. That’s when I got this screenshot:

Every one of those green dots is a predator, too. But only 5 were in range.

The entire planet was nothing but supercharged predators.

So uh... The first free freighter....

So uh... The first free freighter....

It’s supposed to be an S-class right? 😅

I still haven’t clicked the claim button because I’m still sort of in shock. I went through the dog fight event, checked out the freighter and was a B-class, but I had to shut off the game. I didn’t realize it didn’t save. When I reverted the save and did it again, the RNG seemed to have blessed me with a S Capital ship after the single accidental save scum.

I haven’t been playing that long and don’t fully understand what I’m looking at as far as quality. How good is she as freighters go?
